Science Issues We cannot currently understand or predict the behavior of complex, large-scale networks Innovation Issues Substantial barriers to at-scale experimentation with new architectures, services, and technologies Society Issues Credit: MONET Group at UIUC We increasingly rely on the Internet but are unsure we can trust its security, privacy or resilience 4

5 Key GENI insight Slices and Deep Programmability Install the software I want throughout my network slice (into firewalls, routers, clouds, ) And keep my slice isolated from your slice, so we don t interfere with each other We can run many different future internets in parallel 5

6 How We Are Building GENI Strategy for a US-Wide Federation GENI-enable US campuses, deploying GENI Racks, GENI WiMAX, and GENI control software Strong open software platform for tool builders Each campus owns and manages local resources Federate with successful testbeds (e.g., Emulab, PlanetLab, ORBIT) and core networks (Internet2, NLR) via mutually-agreed APIs and protocols 6

7 GENI Rack Deployment is Progressing GENI Racks include compute, storage, and programmable networking components Over fifty racks deploying in current phase GENI racks are actively supporting experimenters and education Strong working partnerships between GENI researchers and spontaneous rack vendors 7

8 2013 GENI WiMAX Deployment Console Mobile Clients Thirteen GENI WiMAX sites (26 total base stations) Researcher owned and operated 4G cellular systems Each site supports local and remote experiments Standardized mobile client integrated with OMF and GENI portal for single sign-on, experiment configuration, and management Master EBS band license agreement in place with Clearwire 8

9 Experimenter Uptake GENI has surpassed the 1000 unique user mark. 9

10 Research Impact GENI Bibliography now includes over 120 papers on a wide range of topics. Sample topics: Future internet architectures, routing, and protocols Cloud management, orchestration, resource allocation Wireless: airtime allocation, handover, virtualization Distributed system configuration, control, management Education: networking, distributed computing Network security assessments, defenses Network instrumentation, measurement, resiliance Weather forecasting GENI is already having a powerful research impact in networking, distributed computing, and beyond. 10

12 We All Extend our Reach By Federating Future Internet Testbeds GENI is a U.S. effort, but we are very excited by recent progress in international collaborations Many national / regional-scale peer efforts in future internet testbeds are underway There is strong overlap in basic concepts Federating testbeds is in all our best interests Experimenters want access to resources around the world Federation extends the reach of experimenters in each cooperating region We are looking for partners to work together, from a basis of equality, to expand opportunities for researchers worldwide. 12

13 Example: Validating MobilityFirst Future Internet Architecture in Federated Testbeds MobilityFirst project uses resources in US (GENI) and Japan (VNODE) to build a realistic environment for validating name resolution and routing strategies for future internet. 13
