9 Information Pack - Dedicated Servers 9 MEMORY Memory (RAM) is an essential component of any hardware that is designed for computing tasks. It allows space for a computer or server to write and read information to be accessed by the CPU. The more RAM a computer has, the number of times the CPU has to read data from the hard disk is reduced. This benefits the computer to run more efficiently. MEMORY HOW MUCH RAM DO YOU NEED? THERE ARE SOME POINTS THAT YOU NEED TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING RAM FOR YOUR SETUP: TRAFFIC OS STATIC OR DYNAMIC SITE CONTROL PANEL APPLICATIONS If you have lots of traffic going through your server then you will need a substantial amount of RAM. More traffic = more RAM, less traffic = less RAM. RAM allows for things like Web Server file caching and database caching like memcached. We can also write directories to memory for 200K+ IOPs. Most of the time the operating system you choose will give you minimum requirements for RAM. E.g. To run Windows Server 2012 R2, Microsoft says you need a minimum of 512MB of memory but real world tests show it s more like 2GB. If your server will be continuously running programs with high needs for RAM you may want to consider looking into the minimum requirements of memory for those programs and install accordingly. If you are using a control panel such as cpanel/whm on linux you will want more RAM to run that, at a minimum 1GB, as Plesk Windows runs better on 2GB or more. 10 Information Pack - Dedicated Servers 10 HARD DISK DRIVES (HDD) THERE ARE TWO HARD DISK OPTIONS BEFORE YOU EVEN CONSIDER CONFIGURATION: SATA AND SSD AND YOU LL NEED TO DECIDE IF YOU ARE GOING TO USE RAID OR NOT. HARD DRIVE OPTIONS EXPLAINED: Mechanical disks (Also known as SATA disks) - These disks are able to have large amounts of storage space (up to 12TB per disk) and are the most cost effective for storage space. Solid State Disks (SSD) - These disks are much faster than mechanical disks. They are a bit more expensive and offer less storage space than Mechanical disks, but you get much better performance Picking the right set of Hard Disk Drives is important to ensure your solution will work efficiently once deployed. Mechanical disks - You can have large amounts of storage space reasonable price. This is ideal for storing large amounts of data that isn t accessed often. Mechanical disks are also ideal where you do not need fast performance from your disks. Example uses: Backup Servers Low throughput website Test and Development environments Budget conscious use cases SSDs - You can have a reasonable amount of storage with much faster read / write speeds. This will cost a little more but the speed increase is worth it! Example uses: Database servers High throughput websites High transaction mail servers Remote Desktop Servers Hypervisor environments WHAT IS RAID? RAID stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks, which essentially means you can use multiple disks to provide hardware redundancy (in case a hard drive fails) and to gain performance. For performance think of RAID as a way to distribute files across multiple hard disks. Instead of having to get one large file from one hard drive in 1 second, you can get half the file from one hard drive and half from another hard drive in 0.5 seconds. Spreading the read and writes over multiple disks helps gain speed. The more disks you have, the faster it can become. For RAID redundancy think of multiple copies being made over multiple hard drives. Instead of all the data being on one drive, it is over multiple disks. If one drive was to fail, it s okay because there are other copies on other hard drives. Remember RAID is not a back up!

SYNCOM SYD1 Syncom SYD1 is located in St Leonards Sydney and was previously owned by Datacom as a Disaster Recovery site. In 2015 it was renovated and upgraded to meet Tier 3 design standards. Upgrades included a raised floor, cooling plant equipment, new Schneider UPS units, upgrades to all electrical pathways and security upgrades. Powered by a dedicated 1MW feed direct from transformer on the same grid as Royal North Shore Hospital, it has stable and clean power with an additional on-site standby generating plant. WYONG Wyong SYD2 is strategically located in Wyong on the NSW Central coast outside the 75km radius of the Sydney CBD. This Data Centre was purpose built in 2016 specifically for housing our dedicated server environments.
