TCC, so your business continues 1 Whitepaper

Executive summary The TCC (Tuxis Cloud Concept) is a smart way to build hosting infrastructures for your private cloud and virtual datacenter. It natively integrates compute and storage capacity into a single turnkey system that eliminates storage complexity making hosting infrastructure as easy to consume as public cloud services. By creating a single, flexible pool of storage and computing power we are able to greatly simplify all management tasks for your IT team. One single management platform lets them manage the entire TCC stack and provides rich data analytics. We support the entire hosting infrastructure eliminating finger-pointing among vendors and simplifying support. Hardware becomes of secondary importance. The software used ensures that even in case of a hardware failure your business will continue. This makes it ideal for building high-end environments that require a high uptime en excellent performance. TCC is a linear scalable solution that can be spread across datacenters so even outage of a datacenter will have a minimal impact. Since data is written in real time to each datacenter, it is very unlikely that you would lose data. TCC reduces the cost of purchasing and managing infrastructure. A single IT generalist can manage the solution. Fixed monthly costs make budgeting easy. There is a legal separation of data and supplier so there are no privacy, rights and property challenges. IT balances on the wire between cost and business enabler. Traditional purchase metrics such as cost per gigabyte, Mbit/s and CPU-cycles make calculating your TCO difficult and cumbersome. TCC is a fully managed solution with a fixed monthly pricing. Therefore the TCO can easily be calculated and makes comparison to other solutions easy. Typically the TCC has a ROI of 9 to 14 months. 2

TCC (Tuxis Cloud Concept) A cloud in our concept is a cluster of at least three physical servers (nodes) that even in case of a hardware failure, allows your business to continue. TCC is ideal for building high-end environments that require a high uptime en excellent performance. TCC provides a linear scalable solution that combines virtualization and storage into a single cloud. You may start with three nodes and seamlessly grow to a 32-node virtualization cluster with a separate storage cluster for many petabytes of storage. Whereas in a traditional setup, impact of hardware failures are prevented with redundant power supplies, memory and complex inflexible RAID setups, TCC allows hardware to fail by using software-defined redundancy solutions. Although TCC can be based on high-end hardware with costly Service Level Agreements, we recommend commodity hardware and adding extra nodes instead. This further reduces the impact of failing hardware while increasing available resources significantly. TCC allows us to spread nodes across datacenters and build a multi site cloud. We typically use three datacenters to spread the nodes. Even outage of a datacenter allows your business to continue. Since data is written in real time to each datacenter, it is virtually impossible that you will lose data. Increasing capacity When more resources are required, we can increase the resources in the active nodes or add new nodes. This goes for CPU, memory and storage. High availability and storage TCC delivers both virtualization and storage, with high availability. No more SAN In many traditional setups, a SAN is used as centralized storage for a virtualization cluster. As a result, the model of the SAN determines the speed and maximum storage capacity. To build a redundant solution you usually need at least two of the same models. Then, you ll need to decide on synchronization of data between the SANs as well as failover scenarios. In case a SAN does fail, and the failover fails as well, a split-brain situation could interrupt the functionality of services. If storage capacity is added on a regular basis, it s likely a new bigger, better and faster SAN will be required. If you do not grow according to the initial plan, you may have bought a too expensive model. Doing it right is difficult. The risks, choices and problems of choosing a SAN are eliminated in our TCC. 3

Software defined storage TCC uses an integrated software defined storage solution. In traditional architectures, clients communicate with a centralized component, such as a gateway, broker, API, facade and the like, which acts as a single point of entry to a complex subsystem. This imposes a limit to both performance and scalability while introducing a single point of failure: if the centralized component goes down, the whole system goes down as well. TCC storage software eliminates the need for a centralized gateway by enabling clients to interact with object storage daemons (OSD) directly. The OSD s create object replicas on other nodes to ensure data safety and high availability. TCC also uses a cluster of monitors to ensure high availability. To eliminate centralization, an algorithm called CRUSH (Controlled, Scalable, Decentralized Placement of Replicated Data) is used. To use CRUSH, a CRUSHmap is created. This map defines where storage servers are physically located, and how many disks they have available. This map is then used to determine where data should be written or read, and how replicas of data should be distributed. This allows for defining that all data must be present in at least three different data centers. TCC can use any server as a storage node and increases throughput and capacity of the storage cluster while growing. From a 1U server with room for 10 2,5 disks to a 4U server that can contain 72 disks, any server fits. Keeping data safe The storage pool is a gateway to the disks and is configured with a number of options, including replicas. A pool is configured to store replicas. Data in that pool is directly duplicated in case of failure of a disk or a node. Losing a disk or a node has no impact on the availability of the storage cluster. Adding storage is a breeze and can be done on the fly. Expanding existing nodes as well as adding complete new nodes is seamless and can be completed without any interruption. Scalability Although virtualization nodes and storage nodes can be separated, any node that is used for virtualization may be used for storage as well. You can start with a small cluster of three nodes which provides 15 Terabytes of net SSD storage, 1,5 Terabytes of memory and over 100 cores. You can seamlessly grow you cluster to many Petabytes of storage, over 1500 cores and 16+ Terabytes memory. 4

The hypervisor The nodes used for virtualization use a hypervisor to run virtual machines and containers. The supplied hypervisor is based on KVM virtualization and container-based virtualization. It manages KVM virtual machines, Linux containers (LXC), storage, virtualized networks, and HA clusters. The enterprise-class features and the intuitive web interface are designed to help you increase the use of your existing resources and reduce hardware cost and administrating time. You can easily virtualize even the most demanding Linux, Windows and virtual appliance workloads. HA Manager The HA Manager monitors all virtual machines and containers on the entire cluster and automatically acts should one of them fail. The HA Manager requires zero configuration. It works out of the box. Additionally, watchdog-based fencing simplifies deployments dramatically. Rolling backups Thanks to the Tuxis rolling backup software, snapshots are created automatically and on the fly. These snapshots can be used to restore VM s quickly to the point that they were working fine. Snapshots can be created manually as well. 5

Functionality The hypervisor is the core of the cluster environment and supplies great tools to manage this environment: - Remote management through any webbrowser - Console access in your webbrowser without any plugins - Live (bulk) migration to other cluster nodes - Snapshots - Cloning - Statistics for CPU, network, memory and disk load - I/O throttling - Resize disk, CPU and memory on the fly (when supported by the OS) - High Availability with fencing - Run Linux containers (LXC) - Centrally managed build in firewall - Authorization - Two factor authentication Cluster summary Number of virtualization nodes Memory per node Cores per node Guest operating system support Number of storage servers Number of disks Supported type of disks Network Minimum: 3 Maximum: 32 Minimum: 64GB Maximum: 2TB Minimum: 4 Maximum: 160 Windows Linux Other operating systems (community supported) Minimum: 3 (or combined with virtualization node) Maximum: unlimited Minimum: 3 disks (1 disks per node) Maximum: unlimited - SSD - Spinning with SSD cache - Spinning 10 Gbit/s 6

The data center The availability of a cluster depends on the location and availability of power, cooling, infrastructure and physical security. Taking availability to the next level, we can distribute the cluster over three data centers. Construction Height service area Fire detection Fire extinguishing Cooling installation Cooling power output Temperature Lightning protection Electrical installation Emergency power supply Diesel supply Power per rack Information security Data center Minimal 6 meters above NAP Two independent, certified very early warning systems Automatic notification to fire brigade Certified Argonite (Ar+N2) installation N+1 computairs N+1 cooling machines 1500 W/m² 25 o C (+/- 2 o C) in cold paths Certified according to NEN norms Two incoming feeds into rack Separate UPS for every feed N+1 diesel aggregates 48 hours Up to 96 A ISO/IEC and NEN 7510 certified Physical security VEC certified safety class 4* Alarm Surveillance Access control Internet Access Support Redundant connection to control center Two independent surveillance services Two factor authentication Biometric iris scanners RFID access passes Router 1: 1 Gbit/s transit Joint Transit 1 Gbit/s peering NL-ix Router 2: 1 Gbit/s transit BIT 24x7 7
