It is about datacenters optimized for the Nordics. Vinnova granted a pre-study DC2BD on heat re-use from datacenters in biomass drying. Scientific leader Jon Summers has now started work for us. He will lead the datacenter facility research We are improving our compute capacity with 60 GPUs to accelerate our Open stack and Hadoop clusters. We have been presenting at Data Center Forum 2017 in Copenhagen. RISE SICS North was featured in the Business Review Europe magazine. We are looking at new projects and applications. 2 Together with LTU we are applying to Swedish Energy Agency for both a competence center and an innovation cluster We are active on and with a Linkedin group Launch of ICE webpage with elastic compute cloud The new webpage for the ICE datacenter operated by RISE SICS North was launched in September! The webpage presents the research datacenter, and describes all areas of our offer. These areas are big data analysis & machine learning, cloud & IT, facility & IT HW, and utility. For each of these areas, environmental setup and specifications are specified, as well as available platforms and analytical tools. Another new feature is the web service function ICE Elastic Compute Cloud, where companies and organizations can sign up to rent the amount of compute power they need to use hour by hour, either as virtual machines or bare metal servers. This without binding contract periods, and with a self-managed account enabling instant alterations. 3 innovation project in Northern Sweden. The aim is to prototype the most energy and cost efficient datacenter in the world. A pan-european consortium consisting of Hungarian data center engineering specialist H1 Systems, UK based cooling provider EcoCooling, German research institute Fraunhofer IOSB, RISE SICS North and infrastructure developers Boden Business Agency, have joined forces aiming to design and validate a future proof concept. The demand of datacenter capacity is constantly growing and at the same time the minimization of environmental impact is crucial. The mission of the 3million project is to drive development as far as possible to meet and unify these conditions. The unique solution offers a sustainable datacenter building which is energy and resource efficient throughout its lifecycle, cheaper to build and operate and brings jobs and knowledge to remote places in large parts of Europe. The 500kW prototype facility will be an experimental lab and demonstration site, as it will be tested by providers and end-users in a real operation environment with all aspects of its operations measured. Project stakeholders will validate feasibility, energy efficiency and usability of the prototype, as well as developing predictive models to aid in future planning and deployment of the concept. News about the project Vinnova granted a pre-study on heat re-use from datacenters in biomass drying Together with the partners Forest Developing Technologies and Future Eco we were granted a pre-study on using heat from datacenters in biomass drying. It is one potential application of low-grade heat, which is one of our tracks. 4 in symbiosis and where a flow of products can generate income in many different steps, by this test a realization of a circular economy. The goal of the project is to develop a deeper understanding how a circular system with excess heat from a data center could be used for biomass drying, which further could be used for creating e.g. Bio-coal or drying of locally produced bio based fuels that is used for heat generation in district heating production sites. The project addresses the area to take care of and preserve the earth s resources and ecosystem by the focus on recycling of the excess heat from the expanding data center branch for drying of the natural resource bio-mass, which can be used for generation of bio-coal, electricity or heat. The bio-coal is an upcoming attractive product for the iron- and steel industry for making the products more green and environmental friendly. We have two modules 160 kw, working on a third 150 kw and adding a cube and a solar panel based micro-grid. Looking ahead, the holistic view of the data centre will become increasingly important for RISE SICS North. The whole system needs to be much more integrated to make it optimised. It seems to me that some parts of the data centre industry are very conservative they do what they always have done. If you need redundancy, you hit the solution with a diesel engine and that is not the future we need to find other ways to do redundancy. 5 See the video of the presentation here: Business Review Europe magazine Jon Summers is onboard starting up new research Jon Summers is interviewed in the latest edition of Data Centre Solutions Europe magazine. He talks about holistic view and that real datacenters are needed to do proper research. He says, for the last six years at the University of Leeds a group of researchers in the Schools of Mechanical Engineering and Computing have been trying to deal with the extremely complex question of how to manage simple thermodynamics and fluid flows derived from very complex digital workloads. It is a question that does now need to be addressed and this can only be achieved using real live Datacom equipment servers, switches and storage. He then says that, we are now forging a strong collaboration between SICS North and the University of Leeds with the exchange of expertise with my taking up a study leave for two years at SICS North, where we will continue to grow integrated and holistic data centre research and development using live Datacom. 6 invested in NVIDIA GPUs. We are distributing 40 GTX 1080Ti s in our clusters for compute intensive applications. The GeForce GTX 1080 Ti is NVIDIA's new flagship gaming GPU, based on the NVIDIA Pascal architecture. The card is packed with 3584 CUDA cores, next-gen 11 Gbps GDDR5X memory, and a massive 11 GB frame buffer. We have also improved with 2 Supermicro SYS-4028GR-TRT2 GPU servers with 10 GPUs each and 256 GB RAM to support Hopsworks and the execution of managed Tensorflow programs.
