2 About the Institution This institution was founded by Philanthropist Vidya Seva Ratnam Shri.K. Santhanam in the year 1998 and was named after the great educationist Prof.V.Saranathan. Six UG & five PG programs are offered. All the programs are affiliated to the Anna University Chennai. The campus is located on Trichy-Viralimalai-Madurai highway (about 7 km from Trichy Railway Junction/CentralBusstand)overanareaof20.53acreswithanbuilt-upareaof3,29,615 sqft. About the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering(EEE) The department was started in the year 1998 and is accredited by the NATIONAL BOARD OF ACCREDITATION (NBA). EEE department is a recognized Research Centre and a nodal centre, for Faculty Development, by the Anna University. The department has received grants from central and state government organizations like MHRD, MNRE, DRDO, CSIR, AICTE and TNSCST for carrying out research and organizing Conferences/workshops/seminars. The department is well equipped with modern facilities besides impeccable conventional infrastructure and well qualified, experienced and enterprising faculty. About the Institute Industry Partnership Cell (IIPC) Indian industry, after liberalization, has become marginally more aware of vital linkage between the education system and corporate productivity. It is an interesting fact that, the engineering institutions and especially the MSMEs have an important stake in the development of each other. As a result of continuous efforts of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, the IIPC- EEE was formulated with the prime focus to cater to the needs of MSME sectors in order to enable them to derive the real benefits of the latest technology. The cell is led by a certified energy auditor assisted by a certified six sigma practitioner and a pool of faculty consultants with rich industrial/academic experience. The IIPC EEE is currently rendering consultancy services in the Power Quality audit, energy audit and renewable energy areas. The institution houses a weather station and provides real-time weather data at nominal cost. The cell also provides technical suggestions (free of cost) on problems faced by the industries in electrical and electronics field. About the Asia Power Quality Initiative(APQI) Asia Power Quality Initiative (APQI) is a pan Asian neutral platform; supported by national support network (NSN) partners; carry out activities towards capacity building and awareness creation amongst various stakeholders especially in Industries, Commercial building and Service sector. It facilitates regulatory and standards initiative in respective country. The initiative has local chapters in as many as seven Asian and Southeast Asian countries under the APQI Platform. In India, the ICA India facilitates the initiative. As independent platform it provides a forum for exchange of knowledge and best practices concerning power quality. The website supported by Leonardo Energy - Europe, is the single largest resource for discussion papers, research and data on power quality in all the countries. The focus is on shared learning, transparent exchange of information and active engagement in the field. Its growing knowledge base on PQ offers description, diagnosis and recommendations that can help better apply and understand issues concerning Power Quality.

3 Workshop Background The increased sensitivity of the vast majority of process industries to the Power Quality (PQ) problems demands the availability of electrical power with quality a crucial factor for competitiveness. One of the major power quality issues is the harmonics injected by non linear loads like variable speed drives, UPS, etc, used in the industries, into the utility network. This is a sort of electrical pollution in the power system network. This pollution causes multiple disturbances to the distribution systems and all the customers connected to it. Hence the Central Electricity authority of India has brought a regulation to curtail this menace (CEA Regulations 2012). Subsequently the Tamilnadu Electricity Regulatory Commission has immediately issued an order (TNERC order dated ) regarding the harmonic limits to be complied by the industrial consumers. The enforcement of pollution limits as per these new regulations is slowly picking up. The presence of harmonic distortion has a significant impact in inflating the maximum demand and energy consumption resulting in high energy bills. HenceitisverymuchessentialthatthePQissuesareaddressedforthemutualbenefitsof electricityconsumersaswellas utility. Recent field surveys conducted by the IIPC of department of EEE in various sectors have revealed alarming results necessitating wide awareness and remedial measures.
