Smart Decisions Incorporate sustainable practices into day-to-day business processes and decision making to enhance mission performance. Standard Business Practice Employees at all levels must be responsible and accountable for integrating environmental stewardship into day-to-day activities. 17 DHS Sustainable Practices Awards CBP: Negotiated a Southwest Border Programmatic Agreement with multiple states, federal agencies, Indian tribes and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. (Will save approximately 400 staff hours per year) Implemented a number of energy savings projects along the southwest border S&T: Completed a four season inventory of the plants and animals living on the Plum Island Animal Disease Center through a grant from the NY Department of Environmental Conservation S&T and CBP formed a join team to provide solar energy and reduce diesel fuel usage at two remote forward operating bases. ICE: Completed a LEED Gold Facility, including a solar energy carport ($37,000 electric cost saving annually) FOIA team transitioned to an electronic based office (reduced the backlog by 99%) Sustainability Hero: David Duda, Office of Procurement Operations Lead Procurement Analyst on Sustainability for DHS Compiled the DHS Sustainable Acquisitions Report for OMB On the Council on Environmental Quality Supply Chain Greenhouse Gas Emissions Federal Work Group 17

18 Climate Resilience Climate Resilience Executive Steering Committee Senior representatives from each operational and support component. Intra-departmental oversight and management body Supported by the Climate Resilience Directors Group Charged with integrating climate resilience measures into the Department s programs, operations, investment and decision-making processes. Oversee the support of the Department s ability to ensure continuance of mission services to the public given changing climatic conditions.
