Recent Developments in Federal Electronics Stewardship
Why Focus on Electronics? Rapid advances in IT have resulted in: Increased sales of electronics worldwide Increased energy consumption A new stream of obsolete and discarded electronic products
Purchasing Facts U.S. factory sales of CE will exceed $200 billion in 2012 The average American household owns 24 CE products (Source: Consumer Electronics Association )
Use Facts More than 180 million computers in use in the U.S., in 2009 (2% of nation s annual electricity use) Office equipment consumes 7% of all the electricity in buildings Servers and Data Centers use about 61 billion kwh (1.5% of total U.S. electricity consumed/ $4.5 billion annual bill)
End-of-life Facts 3.19 million tons of E waste generated in the U.S., in ,000 tons of consumer electronics recycled (17.7%) Certain electronics contain lead, mercury, and other toxic constituents Potential adverse effects on human health/environment if improperly disposed
The Federal Electronics Footprint ~$600 billion spent on information technology over the past decade ~1.8 million computers and monitors purchased/leased each year ~5 million computers in currently use ~1.6 million computers/monitors disposed yearly (36% reused, 52% recycled)
