Stratford s unique municipal-wide broadband network, reputation for innovation and strengths in IT and automotive make it the ideal real-life location to demonstrate new autotech in a living lab environment.
Showcasing connected technologies in REAL LIFE The City of Stratford, supported by the Government of Ontario, is positioned to be at the forefront of the automated vehicle revolution and is seeking partners with whom to develop working relationships while offering ideal operating conditions for furthering research and development in automated vehicle technologies.
Why Stratford, Ontario? Stratford has been identified by the Automotive Parts Manufacturer s Association of Canada (APMA) as the ideal real-life demonstration site for automated vehicles* and its ubiquitous WiFi network, size and location has provided that distinct advantage. SIZE As an urban community, Stratford has many features that provide an excellent testing ground for these vehicles, including traffic signals, a variety of traffic signs, a variety of intersections, railway crossings, roundabouts, streets with tree canopies, street lighting, centre boulevards, public transit, underpasses, winding park roads, parking lots, bicycle lanes, and other real-world scenarios. GEOGRAPHY In addition to its compact urban core, Stratford is located in a geographical region that offers a variety of weather conditions, topography and traffic conditions. Central to the automobile manufacturing hub in southwest Ontario, Stratford offers city driving, long-haul testing grounds and access to an established automotive assembly niche. WIRELESS Stratford s ubiquitous Wi-Fi, dark fibre backbone and established internet capabilities, have given it the competitive edge. Stratford is wired to go.
Innovation Revolution The auto industry in both North America and the world is poised for a major revolution. Stratford, located central to southwest Ontario, has been involved in automobile manufacturing since the early days of the automobile. As we are all aware, there are major changes taking place in the global economy. World trade is becoming increasingly important and automobiles, in particular, require enormous markets in order to recover the huge research and development investment. The design and technology aspects of the auto sector are primed to experience profound growth and Stratford is uniquely positioned with its manufacturing assembly niche, to offer significant value added benefits to the automotive technology development industries.
Population: 31,465 (2016) Primary Industries: Manufacturing; Healthcare; Retail; Accommodation; Hospitality Over 1 million visitors annually Stratford Festival generates over $133.4 million in annual economic activity (2015)
Connected Capital of Canada IT and Autotech Cluster One of the only communities in North America to feature 30-square kilometre Wi-Fi connectivity along with upgraded security and data collection able to handle a range of connected vehicles. 8 Stratford, A Connected City Driven by Infrastructure Advancement Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) 3D City Modelling Stratford Simulation Models Microgrid Canada s Largest Battery Storage Facility 10 Megawatt Solar Installations Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Data Analytics Living Lab
Microgrid, Battery Storage, and Combined Heat and Power (CHP) A microgrid is connected to the grid during periods of normal operation but has the ability to operate autonomously in the event of an outage, storm, disaster or other crisis situation. Microgrids are typically fed through a combination of renewables, batteries and generators. The battery storage facility, located in Wright business park, is currently the largest in Canada and has a storage capacity of 40.8 Megawatt hours of available energy enough to supply over 10,000 homes with electricity for an hour. Combined Heat and Power (CHP) is an on-site electricity generation method that harnesses the power of heat to transform it into thermal energy that can then be used for space heating, cooling, domestic hot water and industrial processes.
Stratford, Ontario: A Showcase for Connected Vehicle Applications 1. Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) 2. Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) 3. Infrastructure-to-Infrastructure (X2X) Project Partners will include Automotive Supplier to Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) customers, software and hardware firms in Information Technology sector and Advanced Electronics suppliers with commercial offerings applicable to connected transportation infrastructure The collaboration project will demonstrate Ontario developed commercial offerings for partner on rolling test vehicles, including private vehicles and Transit/Utility Fleet Vehicles This project will focus on working with the most advanced and connected municipal infrastructure (Rhyzome Networks; fiber/wi-fi) available in Stratford, Ontario. 11/3/
Stratford s Smart City Infrastructure and Digital Services Utility Telco (Utelco) Following features give Stratford ability to mobilize new tests quickly: 1GIG LIT FIBRE & CITY-WIDE WI-FI w/ 300 access points Carrier grade Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) fibre backbone N Wi-Fi (360 Access Pts) Wi-Fi for laptops, smartphones, visitors, students, merchants Smart Meter Backhaul 20,000 Landis Gyr (Toshiba) Festival Hydro meters Residential Internet Service Provider $30/month, unlimited 8Mbps up/down Living Lab for global/emerging technologies Toshiba, LeoNovus, Cisco, Pravala, Automotive Parts Manufacturer s Association 11/3/
What began as a changeover to smart metering for Stratford s hydro utility became so much more when the opportunity to build infrastructure that would support affordable internet and connectivity options was recognized back in Rhyzome Networks is building a city-owned data ecosystem for Stratford that is: dependable and carrier-grade, via a 70km grid of optical fibre ubiquitous and mobile, via wireless mesh technology using IEEE N Wi-Fi.
With a fibre optic data grid, and a citywide high-speed wireless network, Rhyzome Networks built the data infrastructure that positioned Stratford to emerge as a digital technology centre, broadband economy and Intelligent community. Rhyzome also work with other communities who are planning and building infrastructure for their citizens in rural and under serviced areas in order to deliver broadband connectivity that: Satisfies industrial and commercial broadband needs Promotes local economic growth Helps bridge the urban/rural digital divide Fosters digital inclusion for fixed and low-income internet users
Stratford Free Stratford s downtown core has free Wi-Fi that allows both citizens and visitors to access the internet after watching a quick video on energy conservation. Connected users also have the option to quickly access information about the City of Stratford relating to points of interest, restaurants and local merchants.
Fibre Connectivity Rhyzome offers lit and dark fibre connections for commercial and new construction residential applications in and around the City of Stratford. Fibre connections offer a more reliable and tailorable option for businesses that also offer a higher level of security during data transmission.
Looking Forward Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) is a form of wireless communication that allows for high data transmission and is being applied to autonomous vehicles as their primary means of communication. A DSRC network could be the foundation of the new age of a connected city from smart traffic lights that can communicate with emergency vehicles to parking fees that can be collected automatically removing the need for current methods of collection and more
Looking Forward Lidar Data and 3D Mapping Lidar is a technology that uses light to render images of objects or environments. It has the capacity to image anything from rocks, walls, and buildings to clouds and molecules. Lidar s application in the autonomous vehicle trials relates to its sensors using light to sense the environment around the vehicle to promote accident avoidance and also to allow the vehicle to follow the road.
Looking Forward We are replacing the access points currently used to connect residential and commercial end users with units manufactured by Aruba Networks that will allow higher speeds, reliability, and consistency to customers.
Why Stratford? The key answer is leadership you have a mayor and municipal council who decided years ago they were going to invest in city-wide Wi-Fi. Flavio Volpe, President, Automotive Parts Manufacturing Association, Toronto Star, 2016 Stratford is the connected capital of Canada... it s a smaller city that has truly invested in a connected infrastructure. Grant Courville, Director of Product Management, QNX Software Systems, Ottawa, Toronto Star, 2016 The City of Stratford was essential to the success of our autonomous driving project at Renesas. John Buszek, Segment Marketing Manager, RENESAS, ADAS Solutions, Automotive Unit, September, 2017 It gets exciting because you are bringing together businesses and industries that did not coexist before. Stratford can be one or all of those things, depending on the partners they can develop.
