4 Living Lab Definitions Jens Schumacher/Alcotra: A living lab is not a test bed as its philosophy is to turn users, from being traditionally considered as observed subjects for testing products/services against requirements, into value creation in contributing to the cocreation and exploration of emerging ideas, breakthrough scenarios, innovative concepts and related artifacts. Wiki: A living lab is a research concept. A living lab is a usercentered, open-innovation ecosystem, often operating in a territorial context (e.g. city, agglomeration, region), integrating concurrent research and innovation processes within a publicprivate-people partnership. Mitchell, Larson, and Pentland at MIT are credited with first proposing the concept of a Living Laboratory. 20 Arlington County Sensor deployments Deployed County sensors: Outside temperature and humidity sensors on 10 County facilities ~300 Color/FLIR cameras detect presence of vehicular traffic. ~180 CCTV cameras used to observe traffic flow and roadway conditions. ~300 Inductive Loops used to detect presence of vehicular traffic ~15 Travel Time system uses Bluetooth to collect travel speed/time ~70 RTMS (Remote Traffic Microwave Sensors) used to count and classify vehicular traffic ~150 Opticom EVP (Emergency Vehicle Preemption) used to give priority to emergency vehicles approaching the intersection.
