INTERNET OF THINGS CAPACITY BUILDING CHALLENGES OF BIG DATA AND PLANNED SOLUTIONS BY ITU ICTP Workshop 17 March 2016 Halima N Letamo Training and Development Officer International Telecommunication Union
About ITU OUTLINE ITU Definition of IOT A Connected World Connected people IOT and Big Data Connected things and big data Big data and development Big Data and Emerging Jobs Closing the Skills Gap What ITU Does ITU Work Conclusion
ABOUT ITU Established in ITU Three Sectors: Radiocommunication Standardization Development 193 Member States, 750+ Sector Members
DEFINITION OF IoT IN ITU A global infrastructure for the information society, enabling advanced services by interconnecting (physical and virtual) things based on, existing and evolving, interoperable information and communication technologies. Recommendation ITU-T Y.2060
A CONNECTED WORLD Nearly 15B connections Key Growth Drivers 4 fold speed increase Source: CISCO More devices Faster Broadband speeds More internet users More rich media content 3b internet users 1M video minutes per second 5
IOT AND BIG DATA Definition of Big Data datasets whose size is beyond the ability of typical database software tools to capture, store, manage, and analyze This definition is intentionally subjective and incorporates a moving definition of how big a Source: McKingsy report dataset needs to be in order to be considered big data ITU members have approved the first ITU standard on Big Data (approved 6/11/2015). The international standard details the requirements, capabilities and use cases of cloud-based Big Data as well as a high-level system context view and its relationships with other entities Recommendation ITU-T Y.3600 Big data cloud computing based requirements and capabilities International Telecommunication Union
IOT AND BIG DATA Related or two sides of the same coin? Is this statement about Big Data or the Internet of Things? 1. Every minute, we send 204 million s, generate 1.8 million Facebook likes, send 278 thousand tweets, and upload 200 thousand photos to Facebook million RFID tags (used to capture data and track movement of objects in the physical world) were sold in By 2021, it s estimated this number will increase to 209 billion 3. The amount of devices that connect to the internet will rise from about 13 billion today to 50 billion by The industry is expected to grow from US$10.2 billion in 2013 to about US$54.3 billion by Source SAS best practices
IOT GENERATES BIG DATA IoT and Big Data are closely connected. Data generated by IoT s is characterized by:
Connected Things and Big Data 14.8b things connected in 2015 out of a possible 1.8 trillion Estimates: Data on cloud Data on traditional data centers-2018 Data from Internet of Everything 2018 Deployed IoT Devices ZB 403 ZB 26B 6.5ZB
BIG DATA ON DEVELOPMENT Need for Effective global standards: development of standards Potential for security breaches: New policies, regulation, security focus Increased pressure on data Centre networks: provision of infrastructure Emerging jobs and new skills requirements: develop skills and promote innovation 1
