HP BladeSystem Matrix for PLM Environments Simplify IT and reduce costs with an integrated shared services infrastructure
Businesses that rely on product lifecycle management (PLM) systems need solutions that can grow and adapt with the changing needs of the organization. They need infrastructures that can address growing compute and storage requirements and project-specific demand fluctuations. Simultaneously, IT needs to simplify the PLM infrastructure to reduce costs while improving service levels and increasing the value delivered to the overall business. The combination of networks, servers, storage, power and cooling, applications, and management software makes up your PLM infrastructure. Building your data center infrastructure one component at a time, instead of as a comprehensive solution, results in unnecessary complexity and under-utilized resources. That means wasted time and increased costs due to repetitive, time-consuming processes. The HP BladeSystem Matrix lets you create and continuously adapt and manage a complete environment ready for rolling-out applications in minutes through automated provisioning of your PLM infrastructure. Imagine all the physical components, the network connections, the storage capacity, even the power as one pool of resources that you could carve up on demand and assign to different applications automated to connect all the moving pieces to make the best use of the capacity you have, in a standard way. HP BladeSystem Matrix Starter Kit The Matrix Starter kit includes all necessary infrastructure to manage up to 16 HP Integrity or HP ProLiant server blades with the option of an HP StorageWorks EVA4400 SAN or existing SAN. It s an ideal starting point for evaluating or tackling a server consolidation project: HP BladeSystem c7000 enclosure with fully redundant power supplies, fans, and Onboard Administrators Redundant Virtual Connect Flex-10 Ethernet and 8Gb Fibre Channel interconnects Matrix command console software (Insight Dynamics, Virtual Connect Enterprise Manager) Management server host (optionally included) HP StorageWorks EVA4400 Fibre channel SAN with preprovisioned LUNs (optionally included) Factory express integration Implementation and support Add-on Matrix Expansion kits IT infrastructure challenges For several years, IT has been evolving to a more open, nimble, and efficient infrastructure. However, most enterprises have installed their share of short-sighted solutions. Project-based servers, singleapplication storage, and systems siloed by lines of business are now becoming their own complications in terms of IT efficiency. It s no longer feasible for organizations to find individual products to solve individual problems. Although virtualization of individual IT components provides some benefits, issues with cost, agility, and compliance and security still remain: Cost Many IT organizations are being held captive by huge maintenance and operations costs in the data center. Cost of operations has absorbed a huge portion of the IT budget up to 70 percent 1 for support and maintenance leaving little budget for more strategic or innovative needs. Enterprises need to reduce the total amount of resources that are focused on operations and maintenance and free up resources to work on more strategic, innovative tasks. Budgets are trapped in silos that are both costly and over provisioned and underutilized. Agility IT needs to rapidly respond to business and customer needs in order to increase customer satisfaction and loyalty. You are expected to improve service levels and make IT more responsive to the needs of the business. But constrained agility too many applications, too much customization, and too much complexity can lead to long delays in providing business value. In PLM, there are often service constraints and inflexibility due to legacy systems. Compliance and security As IT solutions become more complex, businesses need to continually improve risk management and enhance the quality of services. IT must enable business success while complying with corporate mandates and government regulations. This is especially important when working with contractors, remote employees, or in countries with higher exposure on intellectual property InformationWeek Analytics survey of Information Week 500 executives 2
The ability to help organizations quickly and cost effectively realize value from their PLM investment has contributed to establishing Teamcenter software as the world s most widely used PLM portfolio. The Platform Extensibility Services in Teamcenter combined with HP s converged infrastructure strategy and our ability to deliver the solution with HP BladeSystem Matrix, will further accelerate our customers time-to-value on their PLM and IT investments and enhance their position for future business growth. Rich Ramsey, Vice President of Partner and Components Marketing, Siemens PLM Software PLM market challenges PLM encompasses the set of tools, technologies, and processes involved in managing products from initial concept through end of life. PLM include CAD, CAE, and PDM tools for the mechanical design, analysis, simulation, manufacturing and life-cycle management of products and solutions. Because product design, development, manufacturing and product life-cycle management can be widely dispersed across great geographic distances, PLM is increasingly distributed. To be successful, suppliers and customers must work together across the enterprise, over national boundaries, and through multiple time zones on a 24/7 basis. As this is occurring, PLM is increasingly becoming a businesscritical strategic initiative, central to the organization s success. PLM has to be seamlessly integrated with multiple enterprise applications, because inconsistent development and market introduction processes generate costly inefficiencies. In response to these market trends, enterprises need their PLM solutions to include the following capabilities: Flexible workflow-enabled processes to track development and engineering change orders (ECOs) through the lifecycle of the product Secure applications, infrastructure performance, and scalability Designs and components that are reusable across the global enterprise Reconciliation of regional infrastructures Rapid integration into existing environments and enterprise-wide deployment Highly available application and infrastructure and proactive system management Cost-effective and highly scalable solutions To address these challenges, organizations are making fundamental changes to their PLM environments and their enabling IT infrastructure by breaking down the silos, automating error prone manual processes, and tightening management control. By applying HP converged infrastructure, they are bringing together hardware, software and services to create next-generation data centers that operate more efficiently. HP Services HP BladeSystem Matrix application templates for PLM Matrix application service templates define the server, storage, and network resources and required interactions for an application deployment. HP BladeSystem Matrix templates can also include embedded workflow components that allow you to automate post- OS installation tasks such as the installation and configuration of the application. This allows you to rapidly deploy and automate the endto-end process of provisioning your PLM applications. With HP BladeSystem Matrix templates, you can significantly reduce application deployment times, from weeks and months down to hours and days. Application templates also allow you to free up administrator time from the tedious, repetitive tasks of installing and configuring software to more innovative, revenue generating projects. And because Matrix is an industry-standard platform, it allows any standard application to take advantage of the sharedservices platform. HP has developed and published a number of reference templates supporting key applications for PLM including Microsoft SQL Server 2008, Oracle Single Instance Database 11g, Oracle PeopleSoft with Oracle Database 11g, Siemens PLM software, SAP NetWeaver, and more. Templates are also available for server technologies such as Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, Microsoft Exchange Server 2010, and Microsoft SharePoint Server For details, see www. hp.com/go/matrixtemplates. 3
end-to-end virtualization gives you the freedom to move application environments anywhere, anytime. As a result, you can optimize resources and respond to business requests faster and more effectively. Storage Power & cooling Management software Converged infrastructure Servers Network What is a converged infrastructure? In the most basic sense, it s a truly service-centric not system-centric model of IT. The idea is to merge computer, storage, and networks with facilities into a single environment. All resources and processes are controlled by a shared-services engine that provisions application workloads to instantly respond to business demands. As a result, service delivery is faster, repeatable, predictable, and more efficient. A PLM solution based on a converged infrastructure can simplify application development, streamline implementation and improve ROI, resulting in a reduction in time-to-market and engineering costs. Infrastructure convergence breaks down manual processes and technology silos and brings together all IT resources (including compute, storage, and network components) into adaptive pools of assets. These can be shared by many applications and managed as a service. Inside the converged infrastructure Characteristics of a converged infrastructure include virtualization of all resources, resiliency and resource efficiency, orchestration of IT processes, optimization of the infrastructure, and modular integration with existing infrastructure. Virtualized Server virtualization is common, but the converged infrastructure of tomorrow virtualizes all resources in the data center: compute, storage, networking, and power and cooling. This type of Resilient The quest for a resilient infrastructure often results in IT sprawl for many organizations. Stacking on more servers might be the most obvious way to achieve resiliency, but it rarely achieves IT efficiency. A converged infrastructure pulls from a pool of shared resources. This lets you tune the right amount of resiliency to every application, whether you need fault tolerance or disaster recovery. By using your resources more efficiently, you can cut costs by avoiding underutilization. Orchestrated IT departments today focus too much energy on managing systems when they say they want to manage services. Processes that should be repeatable and predictable take too much time and pull people away from more valuable work. In a converged infrastructure, the orchestration of IT resources is based on policies. Administrators collaborate through a centralized management hub to define service templates and policies. Then other administrators can be more productive while adhering to preset rules. As a result, best practices are hardwired into the system, and the system naturally enforces governance and compliance without repetitive, costly, error-prone human intervention. Optimized Many people link resource optimization to virtualization of individual resources. But a converged infrastructure can optimize for any workload, on any resource, anywhere. It can adapt to a wide variety requirements for performance and resiliency without the dangers of over-provisioning or under-provisioning. Most important, it optimizes automatically. Modular A converged infrastructure is based on many technologies that you re already using, such as virtualization and blade technology. It doesn t require you to throw out what you have and start from scratch. Rather, it starts in your data center today, with your current investments, and takes advantage of other modular pieces that are based on an open, scalable architecture. 4
Figure 1. HP BladeSystem Matrix components and architecture Management Management host Choose from the industry s most HP BladeSystem Matrix management console built with Insight Dynamics LAN Virtual Connect Flex-10 (Redundant 10Gb Ethernet) HP BladeSystem c7000 SAN Virtual Connect (Redundant 8Gb Ethernet) Storage storage target Network Connect to any standard Ethernet or Fibre Channel network Matrix is scalable easily add more infrastructure resources when needed HP BladeSystem Matrix Plug-in platform for the converged infrastructure HP BladeSystem Matrix can help you realize your vision for the IT and PLM infrastructure. Matrix is a fully-integrated, converged infrastructure platform, bringing together the best of HP compute hardware, HP management software, storage, and networking into one environment. Matrix integrates with existing PLM infrastructures, including virtual and physical servers, so you can manage them from the same console. Compute hardware The foundation of the HP BladeSystem Matrix is HP BladeSystem c-class infrastructure and HP ProLiant and HP Integrity server blades. The HP BladeSystem chassis houses power supplies, cooling fans, and the HP Onboard Administrator. A dedicated management host server is also integrated into the BladeSystem Matrix. Networking The HP Virtual Connect option dynamically connects blade servers to data center networks by creating pools of LAN and SAN connections. Virtual Connect virtualizes the connectivity that enables the rapid provisioning of servers in addition to the changeready, dynamic movement of blade identities for maintenance or automated failover, without touching the actual blade hardware or reconfiguring connections. Optional ProCurve Networking Switch products (ProCurve XG and ProCurve 8212) are recommended to connect HP BladeSystem Matrix (Virtual Connect) to top-of-rack or end-of-row switches, respectively. Through expansion kits, the HP BladeSystem Matrix can scale to many more blades or virtual machines, managed as a single domain. 5
Figure 2. Simplified provisioning with shared services Templates To overcome these challenges, the HP BladeSystem Matrix can provide a comprehensive solution for PLM applications and an adaptable, converged infrastructure. Delivered out of the box as a preintegrated platform, the HP BladeSystem Matrix enables pools of network, storage, and power capacity to be dynamically provisioned. Service portal Inventory capacity Resource pool With HP BladeSystem Matrix, you can: Automate provisioning, capacity planning, and failover Standardize application delivery with application infrastructure templates Adapt network, storage, and power resources quickly as user and data needs change Reduce capital and operating expenses Storage The HP StorageWorks 4400 Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA4400) storage array offers built-in virtualization that s easy to manage and improves capacity utilization. The EVA4400 offers percent availability and a dual redundant design; it is factory integrated with HP BladeSystem Matrix as part of a total solution. HP BladeSystem Matrix also supports any HP BladeSystem-certified Fibre Channel SAN array. Management software The Matrix management software, built on Insight Dynamics, combines automated provisioning, capacity planning, and disaster recovery with a selfservice portal. It unites physical and virtual resources into a single command center. It can enable pools of network, storage, and power capacity to be dynamically provisioned to run your applications as one managed domain. It also lets you implement selfservice application deployment through best practice templates that save time and standardize processes. Improving your PLM application environment Complicated provisioning processes can slow the development of new application services that are vital to business success. And once services come online, they are often hampered by inflexible architectures and manual processes across multiple teams that make it difficult to quickly provision resources, accommodate growth, and optimize workloads for better performance and more efficient use of power. Enhance service levels and consolidate Simplified provisioning and more flexible, scalable PLM To deploy applications and the corresponding infrastructure on demand, you can use the Matrix orchestration templates. The templates can be created easily using a click-and-configure interface, and then you can consistently deploy infrastructure automatically from pools of shared resources in minutes. As shown in Figure 2, it s easy to manage infrastructure resources and provision PLM and other applications using HP BladeSystem Matrix templates: Start with the self-service portal. The portal lets you rapidly and consistently provision through standard templates. It provides streamlined approval processes and reduces wait time. Once approved, requested infrastructure is automatically provisioned from designated pool of resources. Select a template. Matrix templates define minimum resource requirements for an application deployment and can also include embedded workflow to automate post-provisioning tasks and enable smooth handoffs between different roles and teams. Templates let you significantly reduce deployment times and provide consistent, reliable, and repeatable best-practice processes for application deployment. Create your own templates for simple or complex infrastructure needs using visual drag-and-drop design tool. Or start with best practice templates available from HP for key applications such as Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL database, Oracle database, Siemens PLM software, SAP, and PeopleSoft. 6
Automatically allocate from the resource pool. Pools of network, storage, power, and compute capacity are managed as one environment and dynamically provisioned to run applications. Manage inventory capacity. Integrated spare capacity simplifies resource utilization so you can shift workloads, consolidate servers, save space, and cut energy consumption. Planning and rebalancing tools let you quickly adjust and optimize the infrastructure. You can move workloads to other servers or sites, fail over workloads in a few minutes across physical and virtual servers, and improve recovery time by 80 percent or more. 2 A unified infrastructure that costs less The HP BladeSystem Matrix can help transform the IT infrastructure supporting your PLM environment by helping double administrator productivity 3 and double capacity without adding power infrastructure. 4 More efficient, powerful infrastructure management tools let IT provide faster time to business value, improve service-levels, and support business transformation. Reduce acquisition and power costs You can achieve higher utilization rates and perform more work with a smaller number of physical resources with HP BladeSystem Matrix built-in capacity planning and just-in-time resource allocation. You can realize significant savings by reducing server sprawl and the number of servers you need to meet your growing business needs with next-generation HP BladeSystem technology. In addition, HP BladeSystem Matrix is offered at a list price that is lower than the cost of buying the components individually and building your own solution. Reduce power consumption HP BladeSystem Matrix includes sophisticated power management capabilities, such as dynamic power capping. These capabilities can help double the power capacity of your infrastructure. 4 They also help you capture historical power usage information that you can use for more accurate budget and capacity planning. In addition, HP BladeSystem Matrix s shared power and cooling resources help you reduce energy consumption and air conditioning bills. Virtual Connect technology helps avoid cable sprawl and the problem of cables obstructing air flows and increasing air conditioning bills. Increase productivity Sophisticated management tools enable individual system administrators to manage more resources. Both virtual and physical resources can be managed by the same people using the same set of tools. In addition, remote management capabilities help you cut the time required to manage systems from a distance. With fewer resources to manage, and resources that are more efficiently utilized, maintenance and licensing costs decline measurably as well. The use of HP Virtual Connect technology allows blades to be added, replaced, and recovered through software, saving the valuable time of LAN, SAN and server administrators. Changes can be made in a matter of minutes by one person working at a single console. In a racked, stacked, and wired environment, the same changes might require involvement from four organizations and take weeks to complete, incurring significant labor costs for physically moving resources for re-configuration. Increase server utilization Integrated capacity planning capabilities help you do more with fewer servers. HP BladeSystem Matrix gives you clear visibility into how your resources are being used, so you can more easily recognize opportunities to shift workloads and consolidate servers to increase utilization, save data center floor space, and cut energy consumption. You can provision and adapt infrastructure resources as needed to support growth, consolidation, and high availability needs. Consolidate network equipment HP BladeSystem Matrix allows you to consolidate Ethernet network equipment by a 4 to 1 ratio, while tripling the number of network interface controllers (NICs) per server. This level of consolidation is made possible by the included HP Virtual Connect Flex-10 Ethernet module. It flexibly allocates the bandwidth of a 10Gb Ethernet network port across four NIC connections to best meet the needs of your applications and virtual machine channel. With Flex-10 technology at work, you can avoid purchasing additional costly NICs, switches, and cables while concurrently increasing bandwidth. The net result: HP BladeSystem Matrix can help you reduce network equipment costs by up to 51 percent. 2 HP product marketing, based on customer survey 3 Micros Fidelio case study; IDC White Paper, Gaining Business Value and ROI with HP Insight Control, Doc #218069, May Dynamic Power Capping TCO and Best Practices White Paper, h71028.www7.hp.com/erc/downloads/4aa2-3107enw.pdf 7
