1 The graphics calalogs are created with one catalog for each road-number. To be able to work with a calalog for a specific road-number you first have to create it. This is done by starting a batch-jobb. The time required for creating graphics catalogs can approximately be calculated as 1 CPU-minute per kilometer roadlenght, and the longest roads in a county can be up to 400 kms. Therefor it is recomended that these batch-jobs are started the day before the catalog is needed so that they can execute during nighttime. If you choose to work with catalogs you are restricted to the "standard"-graphtype only (the 7 most interesting parameters, figure 6). By doing this we managed to create unique graph-names within the 8 characters restriction. The graph-names are mainly based on the startpoint of the roadsection beeing presented in the graph. When you work with an existing catalog you order the graph in almost the same way as you order "standard"-graphs outside calalogs. The graph is then replayed, PROC GREPLAY using the graph-name, and it is displayed on the screen in seconds. The batch-jobs, for the catalogs, were created using the technique with a SAS-program creating another temporary SAS-program which then is executed. The number of code-rows created for the batch-jobb is directly proportional to the number of graphs to be created in the jobb. This caused problems with big SAS-programs, if you run SAS 5.16 under VMS you get problems if the program contains more than rows of code. The maximum number of graphs that could be created without exceeding rows were 10. Therefore we had to make a solution to start a number of sequential batch-jobs, each craeting 10 graphs (or less). This was done by a variation on the first tested technique. Instead of making a SAS-program that generated anoter SAs-program we made a SAS-program that generated a temporary VMS-command file. Figure 9 shows the principle for starting sequential batch-jobs. From a panel you order start of the batch-job that will create the graphics catalog for a specified road-number. This is done by starting a VMS-commandfile using the VMS function. The commandfile starts a SAS-program, this program determins how many graphs that is to be created then it builds a temporary VMS-commandfile. This "second" VMS-commandfile builds a number of SAS-programs of less than rows, after that one program is built it is executed then the commandfile builds the next program, executes it and so on. This is done until all graphs for the road are created. 442
2 INTERACTIVE PARAMETERS SATDH r'. Graphical presentation of rodcondition in charts and pies. Sometimes it could be useful for the pavement engineer to present the toadcondition for the whole county. Therefore we developed difftent types of charts for presentation. In figure 10 you can see an example of a chart. This describe the rut depth for diffrent traffic-classes. 3 The chart is made with PROC GCHART VBAR with option ANNOTATE using ANNOTATE-datasets, all text around the chart is prepared in ANNOTATE-datasets. This type of charts could also be selcted for special types of asfaltlayers to compare which layer is the best. The end-user has seventeen parameters to select for each chart. If any selections is done, the value of the selections are also printed out at the top of the chart, figure PROCENT (X) Sl<aralbJorg)s Uil SpArdjup kg/ill?. Here we also had some problem with the too slow response time. Even this time we solved the problem with a graphics catalog, figure 12. All created graphs are saved in the catalog. Which type of graph, parameter and all the selections of the asfalt layers are saved into a dataset.if the chart is created earlier you get a key of 8 characters, for the graph-name, from this dataset. The graph is then replayed, PRoe GREPLAY using the graph-name, and it is displayed on the screen. Otherwise the process will produce the chart and put it in the catalog before the output.this procedure will take 10 times longer. In a VAxstation2000 it will take approximately seconds, if the graph is created before, and 4-5 minutes if it is a "new" graph. 444

Summary With SAS/AF andsas/graph software we have been able to develop the PUB-system in a relative short time. Even the performance problems due to poor CPU capacity could be solved using graphics catalogs. The system is an easy to use end user-system. SAS/GRAPH offers exelent possibilitys to develop graphical presentation excactly as you want them especially if you use the ANNOTATE option. We are looking forward to the production version of the Rdb-interface which will give an easier way to convert Rdb-tables into SAS-datasets. 446
