3 TYPICAL CONCERN ABOUT OPEN SCIENCE Researchers are puzzled, especially, by the demand to open data Open science principles does not force to open everything but to teach researchers how and on what grounds publications, data and processes can be opened What sort of ethical issues are related to research data management Researcher can explain why certain data cannot be opened Super sensitive data cannot be opened but its metadata mostly likely can be opened As open as possible, as closed as necessary European Commission Source: 3

4 OPEN ACCESS PUBLISHING AND PUBLICATION PLAN In the funding application, the publication plan is included in the research plan. Researchers can publish their articles following either green or gold open access. Funding can be applied to cover research costs arising from open access publishing of research results. 4

5 PUBLISHING ::: OPEN ACCESS Types of open access publishing Genuinely open publishing (golden road) and self-archiving (green road) Publisher policies towards open access in SHERPA/RoMEO (including partly social media policy) Gold OA and article processing charge APC (article processing charge; publication fee) of the Gold OA journals can be included in Academy of Finland s grant application Hybrid model of publishing Subscription fees + APC Academy of Finland s stance towards hybrid journals negative NB! CHANGE in the policy in May 2017 Also hybrid model costs can be covered with Academy funding

6 GREEN? GOLD? Green open access means that researchers publish their articles in traditional subscription-based scientific journals and deposit parallel copies (i.e. parallel publishing or self-archiving) in online open access repositories or databases. (In UH preferably in TUHAT database.) In practice Send your copy of the manuscript to: Gold open access means that a publication is immediately provided in open access mode through a high-quality open access publication channel, that is, an open access journal. 12 DMPTUULI Data management planning tool DMPTuuli helps you to write your data management plan. Is not a data storage. Instead, it gives you tips and advices where to store your data and how to share it with others if needed, for example. Provides general level instructions and guidance, for example, from Academy of Finland and University of Helsinki. Guidance for specific data types and research disciplines are coming later. Anyone can create an account and log in. 12

14 DATA MANAGEMENT PLAN (DMP) An integral part of good research practice and ensures research integrity and quality Helps you to manage your data, meet funder requirements and help others to use your data if shared A living document updatable and reviewable Create your data management plan early and review it regularly throughout the research project Describes what data will be collected and how the usage and storage of your data (incl. metadata) how to enable the reuse of your data after the project by sharing ethical and legal issues or restrictions on data sharing copyright and intellectual property rights (IPR) of data roles and responsibilities of data management of your project ownership and licensing of used data costing or resources needed Figure: 14

15 DEFINITIONS OF RESEARCH MATERIAL AND RESEARCH DATA In the RDM plan data is understood as a broad term including: research material (such as any kind of physical artifacts) research sources (such as various archive material) data produced during the research (such as digitized copies of the aforementioned physical artifacts) data collected by various methods (such as surveys, interviews, measurements, imaging techniques etc.) curated collections annotation and coding of the material on various levels all revisions of a data set produced in/for the analysis process physical and electronic lab journals source code and software etc. All data and materials your research is based on!

Read all questions first! = outline a general plan/idea for your DMP Reflect your own project and data NO COPY PASTING OF EXAMPLE ANSWERS will be made available in publications.. will use XML ; and XML was never used or even mentioned elsewhere Section no. 1: Outlines a structure for a DMP which is followed throughout the plan = describe/list all datasets and material which are discussed later in the plan Section no. 3: During the research project Section no. 5: After the research project Avoid redundancy/overlapping with the research plan; in RP refer to DMP and vice versa Is clearly written and consistent: We promote open access We aim to publish in Nature We archive data in archive X Data is shared in publications and in conference papers Includes a short description in the beginning for standalone readability If some set of questions is not applicable, justify why! 16
