SAP s Strategy Challenges ahead
Challenges Ahead Is there cost or risk with a migration to S/4HANA? What is Core Data Services and what are the benefits? What about our current investment? Should I migrate to Suite on HANA? When should we consider moving to S/4HANA? How is OLTP performance with HANA? What is the reaction in the market? 2016 International Business Machines Corporation 9
When to consider migrating to S/4HANA? Ø SAP continues support for Business Suite to at least 2025 Maintenance of Business Suite core apps; innovations delivered for on-prem customers Application innovations for HANA will be made available for other DBs ürecent announcements: NetWeaver 7.50, Banking Services 9 and ERP 6.0 EhP 8 Support statements apply equally to all databases including HANA SAP S/4HANA Frequently Asked Questions October Will SAP continue to deliver innovations to SAP Business Suite customers on any DB? Yes. SAP remains committed to protect our customers investments. We recently announced that we are extending our maintenance commitment until at least This is an unprecedented commitment to customers in the IT industry. We will also continue to deliver innovations without disruption (through enhancement packages for example) to SAP Business Suite customers on any DB and on SAP HANA. How to Understand the Business Benefits of S/4HANA Better - by Hasso Plattner The SAP Business Suite ECC X.X will see continued development and maintenance for the next ten years. It is the backbone of many enterprise systems around the world and with the introduction of the SAP HANA database the suite became even better in some critical areas. New solutions developed for SAP S/4HANA will be checked, whether they could also be deployed in the suite as well. A good example are the SAP Fiori self- service scenarios. It is perfectly fine to stay on the business suite for the foreseeable future. For details refer to: SAP Note SAP S/4HANA Frequently Asked Questions, October Recent blog post by Hasso Plattner, Nov 30, Interview with board member Bernd Leukert ( International Business Machines Corporation 10
When to consider migrating to S/4HANA? Ø Take time to consider various factors before migrating What will the world look like in 2025? - Could competitors or customers cause SAP to rethink their HANA-only strategy? - What will cloud solutions and services look like years from now? Many applications and industry solutions are not yet available - S/4HANA applications intentionally have reduced business functionality - Blog post by Hasso Plattner, Nov 30, How to Understand the Business Benefits of S/4HANA Better - by Hasso Plattner Every transition case from SAP ECC 6.0 to SAP S/4HANA has to be evaluated individually but most of the installed base should be covered by now. For some time there will always be a constellation, where the suite is the more complete solution for a specific client. That shouldn t be interpreted as a weakness of SAP S/4HANA but a compliment to the suite. - See SAP S/4HANA Cookbook for details of what is available today Limited migration experience of partners and system integrators - More experience with time; SAP pledges to help in SAPPHIRE 2016 keynote Continued development of tools to make migration easier is likely 2016 International Business Machines Corporation 11
When to consider migrating to S/4HANA? Ø Take time to consider various factors before migrating Waiting will help with changes in the migration path - Complex getting from S/4HANA Finance 1503 to S/4HANA Stabilization of functionality; avoid upgrades to fix application issues 2016 International Business Machines Corporation 12
Challenges of migrating to S/4HANA Ø Significant investment in existing business solution Large customer base with substantial investment in hardware, software and business functionality - Migration requires replacement of current hardware and software - Migration requires new development and testing effort similar to original SAP rollout - Migration requires remediation of custom code and potential changes to existing business processes - Extensive customization has been performed in most systems! Current infrastructure processes must change - New hardware and software will require changes in processes and procedure - New installations, maintenance, support, operations, escalation, etc. Support staff will need to be replaced or retrained - Different skills required - Impact on in-house staff 2016 International Business Machines Corporation 13
Challenges of migrating to S/4HANA Ø Cost and Risk Considerations Migration projects are expensive millions to hundreds of millions! - Database & application migration - Expensive consultants / system integrators (with limited experience) Expensive new licensing - SAP may include things like Sybase for free to offset cost Significant changes to existing business processes and code - Custom code cannot be kept as-is (remediation or elimination required) - Major changes to standard SAP code Some functionality is not ready today or does not exist in order to be simple - Small number of customers running S/4HANA or HANA compared to total Business risks from migration - Will new business processes meet needs? Will system scale as business grows? Will availability requirements be met? No way back from HANA without data loss (see SAP Note ) 2016 International Business Machines Corporation 14
What about Business Suite on HANA? Ø If S/4HANA is the future, what about Suite on HANA today? No requirement to be on Suite on HANA before migrating to S/4HANA The Road to SAP S/4HANA Transition and deployment options for SAP S/4HANA No additional business functionality available in Suite for HANA We will also continue to deliver innovations without disruption to SAP Business Suite customers on any DB and on SAP HANA. 16 What about Business Suite on HANA? Ø Performance of OLTP workload with HANA SAP HANA has not proven faster for OLTP work There are currently no published single OLTP benchmarks for HANA In-memory technology is no faster than good indexing and decent cache: To process single row, index access is faster and scales better than scanning column stores Technical issues remain with SAP HANA for large OLTP workloads Based on column-oriented architecture optimized for OLAP workloads OLTP performance is impacted by Delta Merge process Continuous auto-reorg of delta store and column store of each table drives CPU & I/O spikes Inability to adjust workload priority based on Service Level Objects Spikes from auto-reorg process will effect prod business transactions Tuning still be required for OLTP Partitioning tables, converting from column to row stores, adding indexes, changing code, etc. Ø Reduced scalability and availability with HANA Limited scalability for OLTP work HANA scaling limited to single box Limited availability during planned and unplanned outages no active/active setup 2016 International Business Machines Corporation 16
What about Business Suite on HANA? Ø Performance of OLTP workload with HANA SAP HANA has not proven faster for OLTP work There are currently no published single OLTP benchmarks for HANA In-memory technology is no faster than good indexing and decent cache: To process single row, index access is faster and scales better than scanning column stores Technical issues remain with SAP HANA for large OLTP workloads Based on column-oriented architecture optimized for OLAP workloads OLTP performance is impacted by Delta Merge process Continuous auto-reorg of delta store and column store of each table drives CPU & I/O spikes Inability to adjust workload priority based on SLOs on the HANA platform means reorg spikes will affect production business use. 19 What are the customers saying? ØLargest SAP user group tells SAP: Business Suite must remain in place and freedom of choice for databases DSAG members have developed considerable know-how in the area of the Business Suite, and they are confident that they can use it to depict their processes efficiently and as completely as possible, both today and in the future. Despite innovative products, the future security of the Business Suite must remain in place, the DSAG insists. ü Customer Survey published on Sep 29, 2015 by DSAG (Germany, Austria, Switzerland SAP User Group) ü See We are very interested to see what further developments are in store for SAP S/4HANA. In terms of specific requirements, we want SAP to maintain a real freedom of choice for customers when it comes to databases, among other things. Alternatives to SAP s HANA database must remain possible with no restrictions on functionality or performance. ü DSAG positioning paper introduced at keynote of DSAG Technology Conference in Hamburg in Feb 2016 (2000 participants) ü Press release: International Business Machines Corporation 19
