3 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1. Purpose of Document This document provides technical information about setting up and configuring Oracle database Intended Audience This manual is intended for IT / Support department Technical staffs that perform setup, and configuration on Oracle Database Scope of this guide This document consists of 2 parts: - The first part is to list down all the preparation to create new database instance. - The second part is to describe the steps to set up new Oracle database instance and schemas. -3-

4 2. Database Configuration 2.1. Preparation Login to the database server (Solaris 10) that is already installed by Oracle 10g Make sure the latest patch has been installed (suggesting SP 6) Make sure the PATH environment variable has including Oracle binary package, you can do that by typing command bash echo $PATH 2.2. Database Instance Setup Step 1 : The installation process can be started by executing command in console or terminal of database server dbca There is a common error of executing this command if the installation process is from remote client, which causing the GUI of database instalation not show up. To avoid this problem in your console type this command bash export DISPLAY=your-pc-ip-address:0.0-4-

5 Step 2 : Select Create a Database. Then, click on Next. Step 3 : Select General Purpose or Transaction Processing. Then, click on Next. Step 4 : Enter the desired Global Database Name and SID. -5-

6 Step 5 : Click on Next. (Leave the configuration as default) Step 6 : Select Use the Same Administrative Passwords for all Accounts. Then, enter the Password and Confirm Password. Then Click Next -6-

7 Step 7 : Select Use Common Location for All Database Files. Then, click on Browse.. and select the directory. Then Click Next Step 8 : Set the Flash Recovery Area Size to 4096 M Bytes and tick Enable Archiving so that RMAN and Data Guard can be used. Specify the location of archivelog. -7-

8 Step 9 : Click on Next. (Leave the configuration as default) Step 10 : Select the Custom option and customize the desired size to fill SGA Size and PGA Size. -8-

9 Step 11 : In the sizing tab fill Processes with the desired value. Step 12 : Leave all the default selection in Character Sets tab, or use Unicode for greater support on character -9-

10 Step 13 : Make sure the connection mode is Dedicated Server Mode Step 14 : Change Several Initialization Parameters as required. -10-

11 Once the All initialization parameters dialog box appear, Click on Show Advanced Parameters then the parameters configuration can be started. Once,it s done, Click on Close and then Click on Next. Step 14 : Under Controlfile, create controlfile so that these controlfiles are in every partition that is created for mirroring purpose. -11-

12 Step 15 : Change the value of Maximum Datafiles if the expected number of Datafiles are more than 100, Maximum Redo Log Files will be changed if the total number of Redo Log Groups is not sufficient, while Maximum Log Members will specify the number of Redo Log in one Redo Log Groups. Step 16 : Leave to the default value that usually follows in step 7-12-

13 Step 17 : Under Redo Log Groups, Create Redo Logs as much as the number of available paritition for redo. Then click next. Step 18 : Redo log files will be placed in the partition that will be used to store redo log, separated from oradata and archive log. While for the size it should be around 100MB to 500MB and remember to always create a minimum of 2 member in one group of Redo Log. -13-

14 Step 19 : Click on Next. (Leave the configuration as default) Step 20 : Click on Finish. The display will be shown as below. Then, click on OK. -14-

15 The Display will then be shown as below. Just wait until the progress is completed Network Database Instance Setup In order the database can be used, network configuration must be done, in this case is Oracle Listener. To do so, there are several steps Step 1 : Type this command in the console, like in the Database Instance Setup: -15-

16 netca Choose Listener Configuration and Click next. Step 2 : Choose Add and Click next Step 3 : Type Listener name according the needs, and click next -16-

17 Step 4 : Leave the configuration as default, then click next Step 5 : Leave the Port number using the standard port, unless there is a request to use different port number. -17-

18 Step 5 : Choose No if there is no other listener that need to be created, then click next. Step 6 : Select the newly created Listener so that it can started, then click next. -18-

19 Step 7 : The Listener configuration has finished, click Next to start another configuration in the netca menu. -19-

20 Step 8 : After Listener configuration, Local Net Service Name configuration must be done, this step is useful when the database is using data guard, RMAN, or when the database want to be accessed using sqlplus utility from another server. Step 9 : Select Add, then click next -20-

21 Step 10 : Enter the Oracle Database SID according to the Setup and Deployment Documentation into the Service Name Step 11 : Leave the configuration as default, then click next -21-

22 Step 12 : Enter the hostname or the IP address of the database server, and choose the standard port number or specify the port number if required. Step 13 : Choose No, do not test, to skip the test, then click next to go to the next step. -22-

23 Step 14 : Leave it as it will follow with the service name, or put another name if required, click next to go to the next step. Step 15 : Choose no to finish this step, and click next to go to the next step -23-

24 Step 16 : Click Next to go to the netca menu to end the process. Step 17 : Click Finish button to finish the whole process. To finish all the configuration login to the database server using putty or console from the database server and go to the ORACLE_HOME and go to the directory network/admin, -24-

25 there are two files : listener.ora and tnsnames.ora. Makes sure the content of listener.ora like this one: SID_LIST_LISTENER = (SID_LIST = (SID_DESC = (SID_NAME = DB-SID-NAME) (ORACLE_HOME = /u01/oracle/10g) (GLOBAL_NAME = DB-SID-NAME) ) ) LISTENER = (DESCRIPTION_LIST = (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = DB-IP-ADDR)(PORT = 1521)) ) ) ADR_BASE_LISTENER = /u01/oracle While for tnsnames.ora should be like: DB-SID-NAME = (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = DB-IP-ADDR)(PORT = 1521)) (CONNECT_DATA = (SERVER = DEDICATED) (SERVICE_NAME = DB-SID-NAME) ) ) -25-
