PURPOSE This procedure describes the requirements for performing Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and any checking of analysis work performed as part of a design project or work that forms a project in its own right. 2. SCOPE This procedure is applicable to all those engaged in Finite Element Analysis who work for MAATS Tech Limited and details the procedures for FEA work on behalf of outside clients and internal projects. 3. FEA ENQUIRIES FEA enquiries from external clients which arrive at the FEA department shall be recorded on MTL-FEA-REG-001 FEA Project Register. The enquiry shall be communicated to the Micheldever office which shall record the enquiry on MTL-BAC-REG-001 Project Register and generate an enquiry number which shall be communicated back to the FEA department. Form MTL-BAC-FOR- 001 Proposal Checklist shall be used to aid the compilation of the quotation and scope tender by the FEA department and subsequent review by Micheldever. 2

3 On award the enquiry number shall become the project number. The FEA department shall keep Micheldever regularly informed of the progress of all projects so as to keep the main Project Register up to date. FEA work generated by a project currently under way by MAATS shall be recorded on the appropriate tab of MTL-FEA-REG-001 FEA Project Register, and maintained until complete. A cost estimate shall be generated as per normal procedure, and outputs shall vary on a case by case basis. 5. FEA SPECIFICATION A FEA specification must be produced at the start of each project using MTL- FEA-FOR-001 FEA Quotation and Scope Template. This specification ensures there is sufficient information to construct a FEA model of the product in accordance with the client s requirements. MTL-FEA- FOR-001 Quotation and Scope describes and references the analytical requirements and interaction details for the project, providing a basis for model construction and required results. The analysis specification must define the simulation category of importance: Vital, Important, or Advisory. Vital The engineering application must be such that its malfunction or failure is certain to place human life in danger or to endanger property or the environment on the scale of a public disaster; the simulation must be an integral part of the engineering assessment Important This can be defined in one of two ways:- a) The engineering application may be such that its failure would at least pose a serious danger to human life or cause direct or consequential damage beyond the application supplier s normal limits of liability, b) The application failure may be vital in the sense of simulation category Vital, but the simulation is not an exclusive part of the engineering assessment. 3

4 Advisory This simulation category is applied to all situations not covered by the previous categories, but where the simulation contributes significantly to the engineering assessment and application failure would cause financial embarrassment to the engineering application supplier or cause disruption to services. The Quotation and Scope document shall be created as a Revision A inhouse working copy, and when complete shall be modulated to a Revision 0 copy with a cover letter for submission to client using MTL-FEA-FOR-002 Quotation and Scope Letter. On acceptance of the completed Quotation and Scope documentation, the client shall submit a Purchase Order to MAATS Tech Limited to proceed with the project. Should further clarification be required, the Quotation and Scope document can be revised in line with client comments or further recommendations or requirements. 6. FEA MODEL CREATION AND VALIDATION MTL-FEA-FOR-003 FEA Pre-Analysis Checklist is to be completed for the FEA model input from which the first set of results is to be released to the client via MTL-FEA-FOR-006 Model Definition Report and MTL-FEA-FOR- 007 Analysis Results Document. In-house checking shall be completed by another FEA-competent engineer prior to release to the client, which contributes to the validation of the model and ensures that an acceptable level of accuracy has been reached. The same process is applied to any subsequent major modification to the model. The model validation process includes the following steps: Comparison of principal results with those of an independent alternative assessment consistent with the objectives of the analysis, e.g.: o Physical test o Alternative or simplified computational models o Analysis of a similar structure Checks on the computational accuracy of the solution, e.g.: 4

5 o Comparison of applied and reaction forces o Overall equilibrium of forces and moments o Mathematical measures of accuracy o Fundamental natural frequency Checks on the compatibility of the results with the premises for idealisation, e.g.: o Displacements and rotations exceeding the limits of the theory o Materials exceeding their elastic limit in linear elastic analysis Evaluation of diagnostic run-time messages Record of model validation conclusions and their rationale Only when the assessments stipulated in this section have been completed is the FEA model considered to be fully verified for analysis. Note 1: If, for any reason, the document has not been checked prior to release to the client, a rider shall be placed on communication to the client stating This is for reference information only. 7. FEA MODEL INDEX MTL-FEA-FOR-005 Model Index must be maintained throughout the life of a project as this important document represents an active record of the key numerical models and the related analysis files and results. The following information is typically included: Model location Model Creation Software Version Element types Load Check Filename and Location Construction comments Drawings used during model construction CAD data used during model construction FEA model(s) used in the construction of the main numerical model Analysis input file names and locations derived from the referenced numerical model Results file (names and locations) derived from the referenced numerical model 5

6 Technical Report (names and location) which include results and data derived from the referenced numerical model The Model Index is constantly revised and kept up to date throughout the project and acts as a diary of the evolution of the project. 8. ANALYSIS EXECUTION AND VALIDATION MTL-FEA-FOR-004 Post-Analysis Checklist is to be completed on the analysis files from which the first set of results are to be released to the client. This ensures that the correct solution procedure has been adopted and, where applicable, that the analysis results meet the analysis specification, are correct and accurately reflect the intention of the analysis. Again, in-house checking shall be completed by another FEA-competent engineer and any queries regarding the validity of the results must be met with a credible explanation: no significant result should be accepted by MAATS engineers without assessment to ensure its reasonableness. FEA results can only be formally issued to the client when the reviews stipulated in this section have been completed. ANALYSIS REPORTS MTL-FEA-FOR-008 Client Report Template should be used to prepare the technical report to the client. The report shall be checked in-house by another competent engineer to ensure the contents are accurate and appropriate to the scope agreed with the client. Checklist MTL-ENG-FOR-004 Textual Document Review Checklist shall be used to complete this task. The final report shall be issued electronically to the client. 10. FILING STRUCTURE The underlying FEA philosophy is to maintain, as far as possible, an electronic filing system. 6

7 For each project, the FEA department has a responsibility to create and maintain a filing system which shall be based on the standard template detailed below: It is understood that variations may be necessary and where variations occur these shall be highlighted to all relevant personnel. 11. ARCHIVING On completion of the project, the FEA department shall make the necessary amendments to the FEA Project Register, detailing the project as closed. The project shall then be archived to a suitable backup medium such as DVD, and the appropriate details marked on the Archiving tab of the FEA Project Register. The backup copies shall be kept safe and retrievable, one on site, one off site. 12. CUSTOMER FEEDBACK After project completion, FEA Engineer shall issue MTL-FEA-FOR-009 FEA Customer Feedback Form to the customer in question. The completed form shall be received by the FEA Engineer and forwarded on to the Quality Manager. 7
