6 Oracle 11g and Data Guard Greater resiliency through the Automatic Health Monitor and Automatic Diagnostic Repository Improved diagnostics via the XML structured alert log Simplify backup and recovery operations across all primary and physical standby databases by improving integration of Data Guard with Recovery Manager (RMAN) Configurable fast-start failover can occur when specific database conditions are detected such as database health-check alerts and errors raised by the Oracle server Support for reading from physical standby databases (Active Data Guard Option) Compression of redo traffic over the network in a Data Guard configuration (Advanced Compression Option) Improved rolling upgrade workflow for upgrading Oracle instances in a live Data Guard configuration

7 SQL Server 2008 and SQL Mirroring Transparently recover principal and mirror machines from 823/824 types of data page errors by requesting a fresh copy of the suspect page from the mirroring partner transparently to end users and applications Optimal performance and minimized network bandwidth by compression of the outgoing log stream between the participants delivers used by database mirroring Performance data collection (single, common framework for data collection, reporting, and storage/warehousing) Less storage is required to keep backups online, and backups run significantly faster since less disk I/O is required (Enterprise Edition) by adding backup compression

9 Schema Improvements ev_ty was split into five tables: event_type containing the event type code redundant data (rows where e_u_type = E without the alarm level information) event_type_alarm_level containing the event type code redundant data (rows where e_u_type = E with just the alarm level, response plan and instructions information) out_of_service_type containing the unit out-of-service type codes (rows where e_u_type = U ) out_of_service_type_agency containing the agency-specific timer information for unit out-of-service type codes (rows where e_u_type = U ) disposition_type containing disposition codes (rows where e_u_type = D ) A compatibility view called ev_ty was created. This view allows existing queries against ev_ty to continue working.

18 Shared Crew More configurability in how crews are assigned Use the most restrictive crew first Currently, if more than one crew can man the unit dispatched, the crew in the station the longest is selected Option to select the crew that has more restrictions than another Example Crew1 can man an engine or rescue (AQ at 1135) Crew2 can man an engine, pumper or rescue (AQ at 0900) Units in station E1 (engine), P1 (pumper), R1 (rescue) E1 is dispatched Crew2 is assigned because its available the longest P1 goes out of service because there is no crew to man it, R1 stays in service If Crew1 was selected, the Pumper AND Rescue would still be in service Option to manually override the crew assigned

19 Shared Crew More configurability in how shared crew behaves Options to determine what to do with the crew when its unit is relocated Crew stays with the relocated unit only Crew can service the other units in the relocated station if it satisfies the crew requirements Station Crew relocates back to the home station Crew stays at the home station because a non crew member relocated the unit When unit relocates back, it rejoins its crew
