9 What are the components of Enterprise Manager The architecture for Grid Control has three major components Oracle Management Agent (OMA) Oracle Management Server (OMS) Oracle Management Repository (OMR)

10 Enterprise Manager Architecture The architecture for Grid Control has three major components Oracle Management Agent (OMA) Monitors all targets on host Communicates to OMS Manages and maintains the host and it s targets Oracle Management Server (OMS) Monitor and perform administrative functions works with all Management Agents in processing monitoring and job information uses the Management Repository as its data store Oracle Management Repository (OMR) These are tablespaces in the database where information which is managed within EM is stored

13 Oracle Management Agent Shipped with Oracle database Enterprise Edition Can only run on USS or OMVS environment (z/os) Monitors all targets on host Communicates to OMS Manages and maintains the host and its targets Enables the database administrator to monitor and control a database from a central location Runs jobs and handles events sent by the Oracle Enterprise Manager and can start up and shut down a database. Run locally with the target Previously-Known-As Intelligent Agent

14 OMA Configuration Files that are crucial in configuring the Management Agent emd.properties located in sysman/directory - REPOSITORY_URL= - Declares the location of the OMS - EMD_URL= - location and port of the agent to listen from clients Targets.xml file located in sysman/emd - contains information about the local system and database instances to be monitored The /var/opt/oratab file - contains the database being configured - gets automatically created when running the script upon installation but can be edited. - not being used in z/os Format: instance_name:oracle_home:n

Cpu Utilisation can be monitored using EM but it is recommended using zos native tools to analyze CPU, Memory and Disk IO usage. Database Components Shutdown and Startup - OSDI subsystem not stopped nor started Alert.log content/generic Alert Log Error Monitoring Configuration Bug is in progress ER has been implemented. Oracle Corporation recommends using this in conjunction with native z/os monitoring facilities. Storage Management Datafile - ORA-1916 is raised when setting online
