3 Managing Oracle9iAS Forms Services Using Oracle Enterprise Manager ABOUT THIS PAPER This paper is designed to provide you with a high overview of the features and benefits available for managing Oracle9iAS Forms Services using the new Enterprise Manager provided with Oracle9iAS Release 2. THE ENTERPRISE MANAGER SYSTEM Enterprise Manager release 9i provides a wide range of management services for Oracle systems, such as: creating and editing objects, automating maintenance tasks, monitoring performance and collecting trend data. Enterprise Manager is built on a three tier architecture that consists of the Console, Oracle Management Servers (OMS) and Oracle Agents. First-tier Consoles provide a list of all of the system targets managed by Enterprise Manager and contain facilities for administering, monitoring and diagnosing the performance of managed targets. Enterprise Manager consoles are java-based and run on Windows or UNIX platforms. Middle-tier Oracle Management Servers (OMS) perform back-end application logic and critical services (e.g. event system, enhanced notification, reporting and job system) for maintaining an e-business enterprise. Third-tier Intelligent Agents, known as the Oracle Agent, are located on managed nodes and function as the autonomous executor of events, jobs, and data collections sent by the Console. NEW WEB-BASED MANAGEMENT FOR ORACLE9IAS For Oracle9iAS release 2, Enterprise Manager is augmenting the three-tier architecture with a new web-based management and diagnostics environment for Oracle9iAS the Enterprise Manager Web site. The Web site is an HTML based application that manages Oracle9iAS configuration files, gathers performance data from Oracle9iAS components and performs Oracle9iAS administrative operations. A single Web site manages all of the Oracle9iAS instances on a single host node. Depending on the installation options selected, a single Oracle9iAS instance may include multiple Oracle9iAS components such as the Oracle HTTP Server, Managing Oracle9iAS Forms Services Using Oracle Enterprise Manager Page 3

4 OC4J, Oracle Web Cache, Oracle Portal and Oracle Forms Services. The Web site provides a series of HTML-based user interfaces known as the Enterprise Manager Home Pages. There are home pages for Oracle9iAS and each of its components. Each home page provides direct access to configuration information, management functionality and performance monitoring for the respective component. The Enterprise Manager Web site is automatically installed and configured during the Oracle9iAS installation; all the administrator need to do is log on to the Web site from a browser and select the desired Enterprise Manager Home Page. This provides Oracle9iAS with a lightweight administration interfaces that can be accessed from anywhere, even through network firewalls. MANAGING ORACLE9IAS FORMS SERVICES The new Web based framework allows the administrator to monitor metrics for an Oracle9iAS Forms Services instance such as: Oracle Home: The Oracle Home where your Forms Instance is installed. Percent CPU: Is the usage for all forms runtime processes on this particular node Percent memory usage: Is for all forms runtime processes on this particular node Number of users logged in: Displays the number of users logged in and running a Forms application Response time: The response time is displayed in milliseconds, and is the time it takes to connect to the Forms Listener Servlet from the client. 5 The new framework will also show information about each user session like: Client IP Address: The IP address of the client machine used to connect to Oracle9iAS Forms Services. Database User Name: The database UserName used by the Forms application for the user session. PID: The process ID of the Runtime (ifweb) process for the user session. Time of connection: The point in time when the Oracle9iAS Forms Services are started for user connection. Memory usage: The percent memory used by the runtime process. CPU usage: The percent CPU used by the runtime process Image 2: Monitor session metrics In this new Web based framework the administrator will also be able to terminate user sessions, and to configure parameters for an Oracle9iAS Forms Services instance. To monitor metrics for Oracle9iAS Forms Services instances on multiple nodes or monitor events for an Oracle9iAS Forms Services instance, the administrator will have to use the Java-based Enterprise Manager console. 6 The initial release of the Oracle 9iAS Release 2 Forms Services integration with Enterprise Manager will still require the Oracle9i Enterprise Manager Java-based console for: Registering events Viewing discovered targets on multiple nodes within a single navigator (the OEM Navigation tree). ORACLE9IAS EM/FORMS SERVICES ARCHITECTURE With each 9iAS installation there is an Enterprise Manager Daemon (EMD) installed. The EMD handles the different components metrics and displays them in a component specific HTML page. You can say that each EMD is an application running within the web server. The EMD co-ordinates task processing and information flow on behalf of the managed component. There can be no more than one EMD on a node. The EMD is also responsible for the interface that allows co-operative management vendors to access management information. If you have configured your Enterprise Manager to handle Forms Services the Forms component information is stored in an XML file - target.xml - where the EMD can find out which component is available and what each component has defined as their way to get hold of the metric data. The how to retrieve metric data information is stored in a forms specific file oracle_forms.xml. How it works in detail When a user runs a Forms session, a Forms Runtime process is started on the middle tier. The Forms Runtime process will create an em_<pid>.rti file, which contain metric data about that specific runtime process. 7 When an administrator then accesses the Enterprise Manager Web Site and selects the Oracle9iAS instance to monitor, the EMD on that Oracle9iAS instance will read the target.xml file and display each component configured for that instance. The administrator selects the component that he wants to manage. EMD reads the information about the component from its configuration file and then, if it is a Forms component, redirects the user to the Forms specific configuration (oracle_forms.xml). Internally, various Pearl scripts are used to retrieve and prepare the collected Forms runtime information (RTI files) for display in the Forms Management Web Page. There is one Perl script per metric data displayed in the Forms Management page. 8 CONFIGURE FORMS USING EM The new web Forms Management page allows administrators to configure Forms Services online. From the initial Forms Management page the administrator can drill down to a section called Configure Forms, which allow the administrator to modify, add, and remove parameters to the Forms Services configuration file - formsweb.cfg file. The changes will affect users trying to access a Forms application after the changes were applied, and not sessions currently running in this Oracle9iAS instance. 9 MANAGE USER SESSIONS The Forms Management page within EM allows the administrator not only to view the metrics of each session, but also to terminate a session from the Forms Management page. The administrator can drill down form the main page to the Session Detail page, which lists all Forms sessions running and select the session to terminate. In order to terminate a session the administrator need the credentials (username/password) for that specific node running the session. Normally, starting and stopping Forms Services is not handled by EM as this function is carried out automatically by the Servlet Container. Image 6: Manage user sessions LOADBALANCED FORMS WITHIN EM Currently within EM there is no support for viewing a load balanced Forms application form a single Oracle Enterprise Manager Web Site. To view metrics for a load balanced Forms application the administrator needs to access the Oracle Enterprise Manager Web Site for each Oracle9iAS instance.
