4 Assignment 2 Read carefully the text of the assignment. Be careful to include all files needed: - Images files; pdf, png, Test your files before submitting: - Copy the files in a new folder - Check that you can compile the document

5 Assignment 2 How to create large parenthesis? 1) Manually: Using \big( or \Big( or \bigg( or... 2) Automatically (better option): Using \left( and \right) Latex will automatically adjust the size of parenthesis Remarks: Need both \left and \right. Can also be used with [ ] or \{ \} or \lfoor \rfloor or (more symbols available there)

7 Labels and References 1/2 \begin{document} \section{introduction}\label{sec:intro} This is where I explain the content and motivation of my work.... In Section~\ref{sec:problem}, I introduce the problem studied in this paper. In Section~\ref{sec:result}, I present my results. Finally, Section~\ref{sec:conclusion} concludes the paper. \section{problem}\label{sec:problem} This is where I describe the problem I am trying to solve in this paper.... \section{result\label{sec:result}} As introduced in Section~\ref{sec:problem}, I am looking for \section{conclusion}\label{sec:conclusion} This is where I conclude the paper and summarize the content.... \end{document} Use \label{unique_label} to be able to refer later to a section/subsection/ of the document Use \ref{unique_label} to obtain automatically the corresponding label. Note the ~ used before the \ref command. The tilde means a non-breaking space. Attention: Needs to compile twice the Latex source: - Create (automatically) the labels, - Update (automatically) the references.

When referring a figure/section, always use capitalized words: Section, Figure, Table. When adding a figure to a document, always refer to it in the text. Always describe and explain the figure.

11 Special characters \documentclass{article} \begin{document} My name contains a cedilla. It can be written in Latex using the command \c{c}, which gives Fran\c{c}ois \textsc{bonnet}. More generally, you can use \^{o}, \~{u}, \"a, \ldots \end{document}

12 Japanese characters Also Korean and Chinese characters (same problem ) Not simple because Latex was designed for English language Many Japanese researchers use platex Not a good choice (in my opinion) due to compatibility problems Recommend to use the xecjk package Attention: - Need to compile using xelatex instead of latex - Need to specify the font

13 Other Latex commands Use the abstract environment with \begin{abstract} and \end{abstract} to add an abstract. Usually after the title (generated with \maketitle) and before the first section. Use the command \footnote{some important text} to generate a footnote. Use \section*{}, \subsection*{}, and so on for unnumbered sections. Often used for \subsection*{acknowledgments}. Use \tableofcontents to generate a table of contents. Use \pageref{some_label} to get the corresponding page number: As we can see in the Table~\ref{nicetable} of page~\pageref{nicetable}, bla bla bla bla

14 Assignment 3 Write a short document (2-5 pages) in Latex You can choose the topic: About your country, about sport, about videogame, about music, It should contains: - at least two graphs (made with matplotlib) of at least two different types (line, bar, pie, histogram, ) - at least one list (itemize and/or enumerate) - at least one table - correct labels/references and explanations of the figures/tables Evaluation will not be based on the content/topic of the document. Evaluation will be based on the usage of Latex/Matplotlib Graphs/table/text can be simple, but not too simple (e.g. only one bar, or a 100% pie chart) Deadline: submit on OCW-i before August 3, 23:50. Submit all files needed to generate the document (including.py,.tex files) Do not wait for the last minute to start it!
