5 1 Introduction The PIS (Passenger Information System) Messages web module is used to manage, configure, and create both text and audio messages that can be broadcast to passengers through different media to various endpoints. The goal of this user manual is to provide information on the different components of the PIS Messages web module. 1.1 Broadcast Media The PIS Messages module can be used to broadcast messages to four different media: GTFS Real Time, Web, Stop, Vehicle. Each media supports different endpoints GTFS Real Time For the GTFS Real Time media, the message is added to an Internet data-feed, Alert Messages. The message can be sent to either specific stops or specific routes Web For the Web media, the message appears as text on the MyRide web site. The color of the text can be controlled Stop For the Stop media, the message appears as text on a sign (near a stop). The message can be sent to specific signs Vehicle For the Vehicle media, the message appears as text and/or audio in the bus. The message can be sent for specific stops, specific routes, or specific audio trigger points. The message that appears at the bus may be presented: as text on the LED inside the bus, or as audio inside the bus via the AVA (Automatic Voice Announcement) using either text-to-speech or an audio file. 1.2 Limitations Names of Routes and Stops The PIS Messages Module does not change the content of the route name that is displayed in the headsign. It can be used to change at what distance (from the last stop of the current route) the headsign changes to the next route (before finishing the last stop of the current route). The PIS Messages Module does not change the name of a stop. It can be used to change at what distance (from a stop) that a next-stop announcement is made Public Relations Messages The PIS Messages Module does not change or send public relations messages that can appear on a headsign. The public relations messages are predefined outside of the PIS Messages Module but can be uploaded to the module. These predefined messages do get downloaded to the bus by a separate process. The driver controls what public relations message is displayed in the bus GTFS-RT The broadcast media type GTFS Real Time is not supported with this release ISR Transit Page 5 of 67
6 1.3 Terminology for signs In general, the term PAS (Passenger Advisory Sign) includes: 1. a large computer screen that provides next-bus information in a terminal, 2. an LCD display that provides next-bus information near a stop, and 3. an LED display inside a bus for next-stop announcements. The LCD sign next to a stop (displaying information about buses that will come) may be referred to with two different terms: VMS (Variable Message Sign), and 2/4-line sign. 1.4 Components of PIS Messages This user manual describes these components: Home/Dashboard, Management, Configuration, and Real Time. See Table 1 for the components and their descriptions. Table 1. Components of the PIS Messages Module Component Description Home/Dashboard Display general statistics as well as graphs about messages. Management Configuration Real Time Manage and create: Messages, Passenger Announcements, Public Relations messages, Safety Messages. Control where stop announcements and headsign changes are made: AVA Stops Management, Vehicles Head Signs. Manage elements that are used to create messages: Categories, Predefined Messages, Recorded Audio Messages, Languages, Broadcast Media, PAS, Type of PAS, Audio Trigger Points Instantaneously send messages, without having to schedule them. Presents a history of previous real time messages. 1.5 Software Version This document is based on version of the PIS Messages web module. 1.6 Accessing PIS Messages PIS: Messages for Vehicle & Stop Signs (see Figure 1), a mail-type button in FleetTrack, at the bottom of the screen, gives direct access to PIS Messages and opens the PIS Messages module. 60 4.8 Audio Trigger Points Audio Trigger Points provides the user the ability to configure audio trigger points at certain points-of-interest. The Audio Trigger Points component provides the user with information on the location of the audio trigger points and is divided into two: the left of the screen contains a map pane; the right pane presents a list of the audio trigger points. The right pane also has two buttons, Edit and Delete. See Figure 54. Figure 54. Audio Trigger Points 2018 ISR Transit Page 60 of 67
61 Audio Trigger Points are based on the radius distance from a point-of-interest. Modifying an audio trigger point can be done in two ways, either from the left screen or the right pane under the Points item. If you wish to modify a point-of-interest on the left map screen, choose a stop, click and then drag a radius-handle point outward (to increase the distance of the trigger point) or inward (to decrease the distance of the trigger point). Another way to modify the distance of an audio trigger point is by using the Edit button, in blue, within the right pane Modifying an audio trigger point: 1. From the right pane on the main screen, beneath the Points element, you can choose a point-of-interest you wish to modify. For example, let s select Central Park. 2. Click the Edit icon, in blue, to the right of the point-of-interest s name to open the Edit audio trigger point screen. See Figure 55. Figure 55. Edit an audio trigger point screen 3. Typically, the name of the point-of-interest (its location) will not change; however, in the Radius field, you can increase or decrease its radius, in feet. 4. Lastly, click the Save button to update the changes to the system. Click the Close button if you do not wish to proceed with your changes to the system ISR Transit Page 61 of 67

ID refers to a numerical identifier for created Real Time messages based on the type of message. New real time messages will have IDs greater than previous messages and will appear at the bottom of the historical list ISR Transit Page 62 of 67
