3 I Overview I.1 Structure of the instructions Dear Customer, this document is divided into four main parts: Part I gives you a rough overview of the structure of the document, the conventions used and the main focus of the product DICOM Removable Media PlugIn. Part II describes the installation procedure. Part III contains the operating instructions for users, which are intended to facilitate their daily work with the DICOM Removable Media PlugIn. Part VI lists the most common error messages of the DICOM Removable Media PlugIn and offers solution strategies. Udo Meng GmbH 3 / 22

6 I.4 Focus The DICOM Removable Media PlugIn (DRMP) is an interface between DICOM media exchange functionality and the SIDEXIS XG software. The plugin is fully integrated into SIDEXIS. It enhanced SIDEXIS with the possibility to read and write DICOM directories on a file system as described in Part 10 of the DICOM standard. It doesn t support application profiles as described in Part 11. The support of the physical media as described in Part 12 depends of the underlying operation system or additional software, and hardware support of the special media. Since Version 3.0 DRMP is able to export GALILEOS 3D volumes as series of DICOM CT slices. In additon it is possible to exchange complete SIDEXIS examinations with or without 3D GALAXIS datasets to other computers that have installed compatible versions of SIDEXIS and the DRMP Plugin. I.5 Scope This Manual refers to the SIDEXIS XG software vers. 1.5 (For 3D: 2.0) or higher and the DICOM Removable Media V3.0 or higher. The DICOM Removable Media Interface must be running under: WINDOWS 2000 recommended with service pack 4 or WINDOWS XP recommended with service pack 2. DICOM Removable Media is available only in the english language version. 7 II Installation II.1 Requirements SIDEXIS XG V.1.5 or newer. For 3D and full functionality SIDEXIS XG V.2.0 or newer. Window 2000 with SP or XP with advised service pack. Installation and registration of the PlugIn has to take place as administrator or power user. The SIDEXIS DICOM Removable Media PlugIn is a PlugIn for the SIDEXIS XG Direct Dental Interface; therefore it can't be run as a standalone application. It is necessary that you have already installed SIDEXIS XG. II.2 Installation procedure II.2.1 Installation of the DICOM Removable Media PlugIn software First login as an administrator or power user. Exit all Windows programs especially SIDEXIS. Start the setup.exe from your installation media. Click Next Udo Meng GmbH 7 / 22

8 Now you see the Choose Destination Location dialog where you can change the installation path or install DRMP to the default program installation path. The Next Dialog Start Installation ask you to begin the installation. If the installation was proper you can see the Installation Complete dialog. II.2.2 Register the DICOM Removable Media PlugIn in SIDEXIS XG Since Version 1.2 DICOM Removable Media is registered as a SIDEXIS Direct Dental Plugin within the installation. After installation you have a new Toolbar with the PlugIns. The PlugIn is now ready to use. Udo Meng GmbH 8 / 22

12 III Operating Instructions III.1 Application Data Flow The Removable Media PlugIn consists of two parts, A DICOM media import functionality which acts as a FSR (File Set Reader) and a DICOM media export functionality which acts as a FSC (File Set Creator). The plugin is fully integrated into SIDEXIS XG, so the top level of the user interface (requests of import or exports) is a part of SIDEXIS XG. The conversion from the DD (Direct Dental) format to DICOM and vice versa is handled from the Removable Media PlugIn. The plugin has also a specialized user interface were you can handle details of the conversion and selection of which image you want to import or export respectively. III.1.1 DICOM Media Import With the help of DICOM Media Import functionality you can import DICOM part 10 compatible images and patient information into SIDEXIS XG. Depended on the imported data, a new patient and a new examination is created that holds all imported images. Udo Meng GmbH 12 / 22

13 To import a study, series or an image into SIDEXIS XG it is necessary to checkout the active patient in SIDEXIS, than you can press the DICOM Media Import button or select the menu item. In the next step a browse dialog box is shown were you can browse to the location of a DICOMDIR file. (E.g. a CD-R DICOM import medium). Select the DICOMDIR you want to import. After open a DICOMDIR, the whole directory is shown as a tree within the import dialog. (The hierarchy is the one usual for DICOM, patient / study / series / image) If available the shown information s are o patient name o study description and ( study date ) o series description, series number and modality o ( instance number ), SIDEXIS Take Type without Nr and content time If you select an image on the tree, you can see a preview of the image within the import dialog. 14 To import, choose a study, series or an image and press the Import button. Now all the images of the selected branch are imported into a SIDEXIS examination, including the patient information. Udo Meng GmbH 14 / 22

15 The images are only stored temporarily in SIDEXIS XG until you save the examination. At this step there will be some extra image data validation to avoid conflicts with double data. DICOM windows (center / width) and VOI LUTs will be converted in appropriate contrast, brightness and transfer functions during import. III.1.2 DICOM Media Export In order to export images of a SIDEXIS examination to DICOMDIR you first have to register a patient and select an existing study (the one you want to export images from). Then you can export the study by choosing the DICOM Media Export button or select the menu item. All images of the examination are then shown in the export dialog box as a tree. If you don t want to export all of the images; you can uncheck some of them. Mention that no overlay information of the image or examination is exported. 16 Convert 16bit to 8bit can help to avoid problems with 3 rd party DICOM viewers that are unable to handle 16bit images. Include transfer function, brightness and contrast in pixel values means that these values are calculated into the pixel values. Otherwise they are converted to DICOM windows (center / width) or VOI-LUTs depending on whether or not you have a non-linear transfer function in SIDEXIS. Convert 16bit to 8bit and Include transfer function, brightness and contrast in pixel values may increase the compatibility with of 3 rd party DICOM viewers but these conversions are irreversible. Switching off these functions leaves the pixel data in the original values; only already applied filters are calculated into the pixels. Save current settings means the states of the first two options are stored as default export settings; otherwise they are only used during a single export session. III.1.3 Exchanging SIDEXIS / GALAXIS / GALILEOS 3D Data Exchanging SIDEXIS 3D data is a special case of exchanging 2D DICOM data. 18 In order to exchange full datasets with 3D data between two SIDEXIS stations it is necessary to export and import complete examinations/studies. The study is the second level of the tree directly under the patient level. In this case it is called 3D images 01. Keep in mind that a full 3D GALILEOS scan with one volume and corrected raw data requires about 700 MB disk space. If you want only to export the volume as CT slices for an external software, only the 3D volume needs to be exported. To export only the 2D images of the scan you can uncheck the marks on 3D volume and Corrected rawdata. III Import In order to import 3D data it is recommended to select and import the corresponding study. (here called 3D images 01 ). Make sure that you options Load ref. Volume Series and Load ref. Raw Image Series are checked. If you select only DICOM series or images, the 2D views of the scan are imported without the later possibility to start GALAXIS. Udo Meng GmbH 18 / 22

19 Complete CT slice series cannot be imported directly as images in SIDEXIS, but rather within the superior study. They are marked with number 100, CT onwards. Single CT overview images (e.g. 6,CT ) can be imported as well. Udo Meng GmbH 19 / 22

20 IV Troubleshooting IV.1 Error messages The following table gives you a list of error messages of the Removable Media PlugIn and offers you possible solutions: Error message Additional description Proposal of solution SIDEXIS plugin interface has Version X.x This Interface Version is not compatible with the Plugin, please update. And 8-16 bit images for import- DRMP can t create a new examination during the import. DRMP can t create a new patient during the import. Please check the SIDEXIS XG Installation / Version must have the right version. (The shown version is the interface version not the SIDEXIS version.) Please contact the support. Anyway it should be possible that you can import at least 2D DICOM images. Try to select a series or an image to import. IV.2 Questions and answers Question: Why does the import tree not look like the export tree? Answer: The export dialog tree is built upon of the SIDEXIS-internal hierarchy; so we have examinations, scans, volumes, raw data and images. Then the data are converted to the standardized DICOM format that can be exchanged with other compatible DICOM software. In the import dialog we build the tree out of the DICOM information. The levels In DICOM are patient > study > series > image. Question: Why does it take so long? Answer: If you export a full 3D dataset it is necessary to convert about 700MB of data. Depending on your computer system and destination device this will take some minutes. If you are content with the exchange of 2D images or 2D views of a 3D scan only just uncheck the marks 3D volume and Corrected raw data in the export tree.
