1 Computer Networks Course for M.Tech CS,AI and IT students (July Dec 2005) INSTRUCTORS: Wilson Naik and Atul Negi, Diagnostic test A diagnostic test is to check the competence and awareness level of the wide range of students. This can allow them to be placed into different study groups for suitable assignments, exercises and term papers etc. Advanced Course: The advanced students from the diagnostic test will be allocated to Group1 (G1) and recommended to CAN course, those with intermediate skills shall join group 2 (G2). Those in group 3 (G3) are some what weak in the fundamentals will need to read more of the fundamentals and basics to come up to the class average. G1 and G2 shall be asked to do term papers and advanced assignments in lieu of the assignments while G3 shall do all of the assignments. Goals The goals are to train the next generation networking researchers, practitioners, and engineers. In particular our goals are. 1. Understand the challenges of network communication. 2. Understand the basics of network communication. 3. Understand the operation of the protocols that are used inside the Internet. 4. Understand how research in networking is done. 5. To investigate novel ideas in this area. Prerequisites Background in elementary probability (Probability for Engineering Applications), Knowledge of basic computer organization, Networks and Operating Systems

2 Syllabus Introduction to Computer Network and Basics Connectivity: direct, indirect, point to point, multiple access, switched, inter network, building Scalable connectivity, devices and principles: filtering, forwarding, switches, routers, hubs. Internetworking issues: heterogeneity, scale, System design concepts: tradeoffs in resources, Multiplexing: statistical multiplexing, stability, tradeoffs in delay/throughput. Circuit switching vs packet switching. Protocols, abstractions, layering, service models, services; peer to peer interfaces, encapsulation, design perspectives of users, designers, providers. TCP/IP vs. OSI 7 layered concepts. Application layer Principles, design of HTTP, FTP, SMTP, DNS. Processes and sockets How these protocols reduce to a request/response primitive and are thus mapped onto TCP or UDP depending upon their requirements. Transport Layer Services, Multiplexing,deMultiplexing. Connection Oriented vs Connectionless Principles of reliable data transfer GO BACK N and selective repeat, TCP/UDP services, Principles of congestion control. Latency Modeling Network Layer Services Internetworking problems IP forwarding paradigm, Getting a data from source to destination. IP address structure Address allocation in CIDR, Mapping Problems: IP Fragmentation/reassembling, address resolution. Routing Intra domain and inter domain routing principles of routing consistency, completeness, scalability. Link state vs. Distance vector approaches. Differencing between routing and routed protocols. RIP and OSPF. Dijkstra versus Distance Vector methods for building up

3 routing information. Shortest path algorithms. Problems and trade offs with respect to different shortest path methods. Data Link Layer Services Error Detection and correction. TDMA,FDMA, ALOHA, CSMA/CD etc.. Bridges, hub and switches. QoS and Traffic Shaping Principles of congestion control and TCP congestion control: Congestion avoidance, AIMD and fairness analysis, Latency modeling: understanding of core analysis and implications, regarding transfer times of small/medium/large packets Current Literature Readings in current literature will be assigned as required. Home Work Problems: These are assigned in the class but not graded. However students might find them useful to understand the class or in exams etc. Assignments: 5 writing assignments for 10 marks each shall be given throughout the semester. Students should submit by the deadlines to get full credit. Delayed submissions, copying etc will attract penalities. In addition 2 Programming assignments shall be given. Term paper This would be applicable only to G1/G2 students only. In this students would be either asked to select a paper or it be assigned to them. Students are expected to read and submit a précis, gather information related to the core issues of the paper and prepare a 25 minute presentation for the class. A a summary write up in their own words within 4 pages with IEEE two column format with references will complete the term paper

4 submission. Guidelines for the Presentations The presentations should have slides that not downloaded from any sites but have material in your own words in POINT FORM (no big sentences) to make the concepts clear Implementation and simulation May be given for G1 students in lieu of certain number of assignments. Typical Assessment schedule for G1/G2 students Programming Assignments + viva 20 Marks Other Assignments (T P & P P) 10 Marks Average Of 5 Quizzes(Surprise Tests) 10 Marks Best One Of 2 Tests (Minors) 20 Marks Major 40 Marks PROGRAMMING ASSIGNMENTS 1. Implementation of HTTP Server, 2. Implementation of POP3 Server3. Implementation of TFPT Server 4. Implementation of SMTP Client Assignments can be done in any of the following languages C,C++,JAVA, Perl TEXT BOOK 1.
