Tackling Application Integration Nightmares with WSO2 ESB Hiranya Jayathilaka
WSO2 Founded in 2005 by acknowledged leaders in XML, Web Services technologies & standards and Open Source Producing entire middleware platform 100% open source under Apache license Business model is to sell comprehensive support & maintenance for our products Venture funded by Intel Capital Global corporation with offices in USA, UK & Sri Lanka 100+ employees and growing
Introduction to EAI
Software in Enterprise Modern enterprises are heavily dependent on software applications SCM CRM BI tools Typically most of these applications cannot communicate with each other to share data Islands of automation
Enterprise Application Integration Use of software and computer systems architectural principles to integrate enterprise computer applications Establishing communication among the islands of automation, so they can seamlessly share data, configurations and rules
The EAI Nightmare EAI is one of the hardest problems to crack Enterprise applications are so diverse Different programming languages (C, Java, C#...) Different platforms (J2EE,.NET, LAMP ) Different communication protocols Different message formats and standards Different quality of service requirements
Introducing WSO2 ESB
WSO2 ESB A lightweight, high performance ESB Provides a simple and uniform approach for integrating heterogeneous applications Feature rich and standards compliant Easy to configure Easy to extend Completely free and open source under the Apache Software License
Basic Features Message routing Message transformation Traffic filtering and auditing Protocol switching Enterprise Integration Patterns (EIP) Load balancing and fail-over routing QoS features (security, reliable delivery)
Supported Protocols/Standards Communication protocols HTTP/S, POP/IMAP, SMTP, AMQP, FIX, HL7, Raw TCP, Raw UDP, File transports (FTP/SFTP/CIFS) Content interchange formats SOAP 1.1, SOAP 1.2, POX, Plain text, Binary, HTML, JSON, Hessian Message processing XSLT, XQuery, XPath, Smooks, Scripting languages, JDBC
WSO2 ESB and Web Services WSO2 ESB is based on Apache Axis2 and Apache Web Services stack Provides comprehensive support for SOAP, WSDL and other related WS-* standards WS-Addressing WS-Security WS-Reliable Messaging WS-Policy WS-Discovery
WSO2 ESB JMS Support Any JMS provider that supports JNDI can be integrated with WSO2 ESB Apache Active MQ IBM WebSphere MQ Oracle WebLogic Swift MQ Can operate both as a JMS producer and a consumer Supports many content types and MEPs
Security Comprehensive WS-Security support with Apache Rampart and WSS4J Support for advanced security standards OAuth XACML Kerberos Integrates with JDBC based user stores, LDAP and WSO2 Identity Server
WSO2 ESB Internals
WSO2 ESB Messaging Model Converts all received messages to a common format SOAP User defined message flows deal with the SOAP representation of the messages Provides a uniform view of messages across all protocols and message formats Example: Use XSLT to modify the content of messages regardless of the wire level protocol
More on Messaging Model Messages received by the services bus flows through sequences and proxy services Sequences and services consist of mediators As configured by the user WSO2 ESB ships with many built-in mediators Log mediator (for auditing messages) XSLT mediator (for transforming content) Clone mediator (for replicating messages)
WSO2 ESB Configuration Model Mediation sequences are configured using a simple, XML-based configuration language WSO2 ESB makes the life easier by providing a set of graphical tools and wizards WSO2 Carbon Studio can also be used to develop sequences for WSO2 ESB
Example Message Flow
High Level Architecture
Performance Non blocking IO Multithreaded mediation engine Streaming support for XML messages (StAX) Handles thousands of concurrent connections and requests with minimal resource utilization and latency 600 million transactions per day at ebay alone
Putting WSO2 ESB to Use
Protocol Switching Problem Integrate two applications that are based on two different communication protocols (A and B) Solution Create a proxy service in WSO2 ESB and expose it over protocol-a so that it can receive messages from the first application Configure the service to send messages to the second application over protocol-b
Schema Switching Problem Integrate two applications that use the same communication protocol but two different message formats (X and Y) Solution Create two sequences using the XSLT mediator One sequence transforms messages from format X to Y The other transforms from format Y to X
SOAP to POX Conversion Problem Integrate a non-secured service that accepts POX messages with a secured SOAP client Solution Create a proxy service on WSO2 ESB and secure it as expected by the client Configure the service to extract the XML content from SOAP messages and send them to the POX endpoint
Recipient List Problem Send a message originated at one application to a set of other applications Solution Create a sequence using the clone mediator Configure the clone mediator to create multiple copies of the requests and send them to different endpoints
Content Based Routing Problem Dispatch a series of messages to various endpoints depending on their content Solution Use filtering mediators of WSO2 ESB to analyze the payloads and send them to different endpoints Filtering mediators use XPath and regular expressions to evaluate conditions on messages
Demo
Transformation with Security
