Link Registry Protoco Options Norman Finn, March 2017 HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. IEEE TSN
At east two obvious choices for P802.1CS Link Registration Protoco An IS-IS-ike protoco. TCP (Transmission Contro Protoco RFC793). HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. Page 2
Common to any choice for LRP An Appicant at one end of a point-to-point ink uses LRP to register information for an appication in a Registrar at the other end of the ink. Registered Information propagates hop-by-hop over a context. Information can be modified as it propagates. Registered information can be controed from a centra controer, as in P802.1Qcc. No support for shared media, at present. Loss of a ink requires reinitiaization and retransmission of the whoe database. HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. Page 3
LRP requirements Optimized for a database of registrations of ~ 1 Mbyte per port, according the P802.1CS PAR. Must have some kind of keep aive to time out information. Must operate very quicky if the database is sma, and as quicky as possibe for arger databases. Acknowedgement of successfu reservations is essentia. HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. Page 4
An IS-IS-ike protoco ISO defines the Intermediate System to Intermediate System intra-domain routeing information exchange protoco This has simiar requirements for conveying information hopby-hop. ISIS defines a routing protoco that propagates address information through a network; we are interested ony in the technique used to convey information hop-by-hop, hence, IS- IS-ike, instead of IS-IS. Keep-aive is done with periodic transmissions as in IS-IS. HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. Page 5
IS-IS-ike hop-by-hop ISIS operates at Layer 2, using (for Ethernet) an LLC encoding (LLC = FE-FE-03), destination MAC addr C /5. The information to be registered is divided up, by the Appicant, into Bocks (IS-IS cas them LSPs ). A Bock must fit into a frame. A frame can carry mutipe Bocks. Each Bock has an ID to distinguish it from other Bocks from that Appicant, and s sequence number to distinguish revised information. Each Bock has a checksum. Acknowedgements are based on returning ists of Bock ID, sequence number, and checksum. HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. Page 6
IS-IS-ike hop-by-hop The Appicant decides how to divide the database to be registered into Bocks. A Bock must fit into a frame with ~ 60 bytes of header. If any data in a Bock changes, the whoe Bock must be retransmitted. This argues for sma Bocks. It takes ~16 bytes to acknowedge a Bock. For 1 Mbyte of data, this argues for arger Bocks. HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. Page 7
IS-IS-ike issues Because ISIS operates at Layer 2, it requires some means to distinguish its PDUs on each medium. For Ethernet, LRP woud use an EtherType, and presumaby, one of the 16 reserved addresses, e.g C E. ISIS has no means (other than configurabe fixed rate parameters) to sow down its transmission rate to meet the capabiities of the Registrar. This is a probem for a 1 Mbyte data base (about 700 frames). HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. Page 8
TCP TCP operates at Layer 4. It runs over IP. For LRP to use TCP, the Appicant woud, presumaby: p p p Divide up the database in some manner, so that a sma change does not require retransmitting the whoe database. For the moment, et s assume that means Bocks, as in IS-IS-ike LRP, but that the Bocks are not imited in size. Use top-eve acknowedgements that woud, again, be a summary of Bocks, sequence numbers, and checksums. Transfer the bocks and acknowedgements over TCP, in order to get pacing and retransmissions. HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. Page 9
TCP Because TCP operates over IP, the participants of LRP require IP addresses, and an IP stack. But, LRP defines its neighbors in L2 terms. A discovery protoco is therefore required. Presumaby, this woud be IEEE Std 802.1AB LLDP with a TLV for LRP Registrar and/or Appicant address. Keep-aive probaby done at top-eve as for IS-IS-ike protoco, rather than with TCP keep-aive function. HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. Page 10
Comparisons This author beieves that the ack of transmission pacing in ISIS presents a rea probem when transmitting hundreds of frames. p If transmitted at fu rate, a arge fraction may be dropped by the Registrar, and have to be transmitted, again. (And again, a arge fraction may be ost and retransmitted.) TCP is certainy more compex, but it is very widey impemented, and provides we-known automatic methods for transmission pacing to reduce unnecessary packet retransmissions. TCP over IP requires an IP stack, and an L2 discovery protoco (LLDP). HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. Page 11
Choices We coud decide to do the IS-IS-ike protoco more or ess as presented here. We coud decide to do the TCP/IP protoco more or ess as presented here. We coud add more TCP-ike transmission pacing to IS-IS. We coud invent TCP-over-Ethernet (there are precedents). Presentations on other choices woud be in order. HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. Page 12
