2 1. Background of BI.DAN-GUN development Since the number of companies that are expanding business development globally (e.g. putting up production sites abroad) tend to be increasing these days, the distance between the sites is becoming longer while the size of the files is becoming larger. Because of this, file-transfer (FTP) is becoming slower and work disruption is happening more often. To anticipate such market needs, Fujitsu has developed a solution for automotive company customers, which transfers data speedily and securely. In the latter half of 90's, 3-D CAD data transfer used to take a considerable time. In addition, it was especially slow when transferring abroad. Therefore, we developed and commercialized this product to give a customer, who was facing 3 day wait periods to transfer drawings to foreign countries, an option. It s the High-speed transfer solution BI.DAN-GUN 2. BI.DAN-GUN s 8 strengths BI.DAN-GUN has 8 major advantages listed below. (1) Ultra-High Speed File transfer (Reducing the impact of RTT) It is generally thought that the cause of the file transfer not getting faster is because of the protocol used. The file is not sent at once, but divided into particular sizes and transferred little by little. To make the data transfer correctly to the receive side, "TCP (note 1)" (e.g. used for the Internet etc.) follows procedure of returning ACK (note 2) to confirm if the data is received properly. If it is within the same office, RTT is approximately 0. But, between Japan and USA, RTT becomes about 100 mili-seconds and increases to 200 between Japan and Europe. If RTT is big, it does not matter how much extra bandwidth there is, the transfer speed does not get faster. We had a request from a customer saying that they want to make their communications with foreign countries faster. To address this requirement, Fujitsu Laboratories came up with a high-speed transfer system using "UDP" which reduces effect of RTT. UDP does not have the function of error correction, and it transmits data steadily without waiting for ACK on the receive side (unlike TCP). Because of this, UDP is faster, but not as reliable as TCP. The data that had been lost can not be resent. Because of this, UDP can be used for streaming sounds and images that are not affected so much if some of the data is lost, but it can not be used for file transfer that corrupts the file when data is lost during its - 2 -
3 transmission. (2) Ensuring the Transfer Data (RPS to correct the lost packets without re-sending) We then developed an erasure correction code (note 5) called RPS method. This method makes UDP reliable as TCP. Moreover, it makes DAN-GUN faster than TCP when packet lost happens so often. This is because TCP has to confirm that packet isn t lost, and resend if it s lost. Especially when RTT is large, TCP takes long time to confirm. As a result, BI.DAN-GUN is much more effective when used in an environment with a long-distance interval where RTT is large, and with a low quality line where data can be lost easily. 4 For instance, the figure below shows the result of an efficiency simulation test between Japan and Belgium. It took only 10 minutes to transfer a 500MB file using "BI.DAN-GUN", but it took 190 minutes when using FTP with TCP. (3) Bandwidth control DAN-GUN maximizes line resources by controlling bandwidth automatically without affecting other communications. 5 Various transfer modes 1 Scheduled mirroring; Synchronizes destination folders at the scheduled time(s) automatically when a monitored directory is modified. (Multiple times can be scheduled) 2 Command mode; Operates from command line. It can be used as a batch processing. 3 Interactive mode; Has GUI looks like FTP software. 4 API; Java classes. This function allows you to embed BI.DANGUN in your application. Just call API with several parameters from the application. (4) Auto compression/decompression & Auto Encryption/Decryption 1 Auto Compression; If it is necessary, BI.DAN-GUN compress files before sending. 2 Auto Encryption; If it is necessary, BI.DAN-GUN encrypts files before sending. For some countries which doesn t allow encryption product, we also have No-Encryption Version. (5) Multi-Platform; BI.DAN-GUN can be operated by Windows 2000, 2003, XP, Redhat Linux 5.2, Solaris10, HP-UX11. Any other platforms which JRE1.5.0_13 is supported are available in speculation (not guaranteed). (6) Bilingual technical support 24-7 Our engineers can support customers 24-7 both in English and Japanese (global technical support is available). (7) Software-based solution Most of the high-speed transfer solutions provided by other companies use exclusive hardware and original protocol. BI.DAN-GUN, however, uses software that can be easily installed in PCs, which means that BI.DAN-GUN can be installed and up-graded easier than any other solution. 3. Conclusion In conclusion, BI.DAN-GUN is an ultra-high speed file transfer solution with many advantages.
