5 Preliminary Information Overview This booklet provides information on installing and operating the American Power Conversion (APC ) Vertical Console Port Server (VCPS). Features The VCPS has forty-two (42) serial ports, one (1) Ethernet port, and one (1) configuration serial port. The VCPS has two interfaces: Command Line Interface (Telnet/SSH) SNMP for MIB II OIDs and traps Product upgrades are available through FTP, TFTP, and SCP and will not result in any lost configuration. See also Ensure that you are using the most recent version of firmware available for the VCPS. See tools/download/ and the User s Guide for more information. See to download the most recent version of the User s Guide. Receiving and inspection Inspect the package and contents for shipping damage, and make sure that all parts were sent. Report any shipping damage immediately to the shipping agent. Report missing contents, damage, or other problems immediately to APC or your APC reseller. The shipping materials are recyclable. Please save them for later use, or dispose of them appropriately. 6 Install the Vertical Console Port Server Mounting options You can install the VCPS in one of two ways: using toolless mounting pegs (pre-installed) or mounting brackets (provided). To use the toolless mounting method, install the VCPS in the rear of a NetShelter VX Enclosure, in the cable channel directly behind the rear vertical mounting rails. To use the mounting brackets, install the VCPS on a vertical mounting rail in a rack or enclosure. Note Mount the VCPS to align its RJ-45 serial ports with the servers in the rack. Toolless mounting Note The C13 end of the power cord must be plugged into the unit before it is installed using toolless mounting. 1. Slide both mounting pegs into the holes located in the channel in the rear panel of the enclosure. Note Marks on the front of the unit indicate the location of the toolless mounting holes on the back of the unit. 2. Snap the VCPS into place by pushing it downward until it locks into position. 2 Vertical Console Port Server

7 Install the Vertical Console Port Server Bracket mounting 1. Attach each vertical-mounting bracket to the VCPS using two of the supplied flat-head screws. Caution Use only the supplied screws. 2. Install the VCPS on a vertical mounting rail in your rack or enclosure using two screws per bracket (not supplied). Vertical Console Port Server 3

Reset button: Resets the internal VCPS processor when pressed and immediately released. Resets all VCPS settings when held for ten seconds. USB ports: Reserved for future use. Status LED: Indicates the status of the Ethernet LAN connection and the state of the VCPS. Off No power. Solid green Has valid TCP/IP settings. Flashing green Does not have valid TCP/IP settings. Solid orange A hardware failure has been detected. Contact Customer Support at a phone number on the back cover of this manual. Ethernet port: Connects the VCPS to your network using a CAT-5 network cable. Link/Speed/Activity LED: Indicates whether there is activity on the network. Green 10 mbps Orange 100 mbps Off No link Flashing Link activity Console Port: Connect each of the 42 console ports to a different server using a serial cable (for example, a 3-foot RJ-45, CAT-5 straight-through, male-to-male cable, APC part number 3827GY-3, available from the APC Web site). 9 Quick Configuration Overview The following TCP/IP settings must be configured before the VCPS will operate on a network: IP address of the VCPS Subnet mask Default gateway TCP/IP configuration methods Use one of the following methods to define the TCP/IP settings: BOOTP or DHCP server (See BOOTP on this page.) Local computer (See Static IP configuration on page 6.) Note BOOTP/DHCP is enabled by default. BOOTP The DHCP setting assumes that a properly configured DHCP or BOOTP server is available to provide TCP/IP settings to the APC VCPS. The VCPS attempts to discover a properly configured DHCP or BOOTP server. BOOTP. You can use an RFC951-compliant BOOTP server to configure the TCP/IP settings for the VCPS. If the BOOTP server is properly configured, the default settings of the VCPS cause it to discover the DHCP or BOOTP server. If a BOOTP or DHCP server is unavailable, see Static IP configuration on page 6, or Control console on page 7 to configure TCP/IP settings. 1. Enter these values for the VCPS in the BOOTPTAB file of the BOOTP server: MAC address IP address Subnet mask Default gateway 2. When the VCPS reboots, the BOOTP server provides it with the TCP/IP settings. Vertical Console Port Server 5

10 Quick Configuration DHCP. You can use a RFC2131/RFC2132- compliant DHCP server to configure the TCP/IP settings for the VCPS. See also 1. The VCPS sends a DHCP request that uses the following to identify itself: Vendor Class Identifier (APC by default) Client Identifier (by default, the MAC address of the VCPS) User Class Identifier (by default, the identification of the application firmware of the VCPS) Note This section summarizes the VCPS communication with a DHCP server. For more detail about how a DHCP server is used to configure the network settings for the VCPS, see DHCP and BOOTP Configuration in the User s Guide. Vendor Class Identifier, Client Identifier, and User Class Identifier can be changed by the user, see the User s Guide on the enclosed Utility CD. 2. A properly configured DHCP server responds with a DHCP offer that includes all of the settings that the VCPS needs for network communication. Static IP configuration You can configure static IP settings through the Command Line Interface (CLI). 1. Select a serial port at the local computer, and disable any service which uses that port. 2. Use the configuration cable (APC part number ) to connect the selected port to the configuration port on the front panel of the VCPS. 3. Run a terminal program (such as HyperTerminal ) and configure the selected port for 9600bps, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, and no flow control, and save the changes. 4. Press ENTER to display the login prompt. 5. Use apc for the login and password. 6. See Control console on page 7 to finish the configuration. 6 Vertical Console Port Server

11 Quick Configuration Control console Use the CLI to define the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway. 1. Enter the following command, all on one line: network set [-i <address>] [-n <mask>] [-g <address>] [-b <mode>] 2. To activate the network changes, enter: network restart 3. To save your changes to flash memory so that they will be in effect when you reboot the system, execute the cfg save command. 4. To log off the CLI, type: exit Example. network set -i n g b static Set network address, network mask, default gateway, and boot mode to static. Vertical Console Port Server 7

12 Access a Configured VCPS Overview After the VCPS is running on your network, you can use the interfaces summarized in this section to access the unit. Telnet and SSH You can access the CLI through Telnet or SSH, depending on which is enabled. By default, both Telnet and SSH are enabled. Telnet for basic access. Telnet provides the basic security of authentication by login and password, but not the high-security benefits of encryption. To use Telnet to access a VCPS CLI from any computer: 1. At a command prompt, use the following command line, and press ENTER: telnet address As address, use the IP address or DNS name (if configured) of the VCPS. 2. Enter the login and password (by default, apc and apc for a permanent administrator). SSH for high-security access. SSH encrypts logins, passwords, and transmitted data. The interface, user accounts, and user access rights are the same whether you access the CLI through SSH or Telnet, but to use SSH, you must first configure SSH and have an SSH client program installed on your computer. 13 Access a Configured VCPS FTP and SCP You can use FTP or Secure CoPy (SCP) to transfer new firmware to the VCPS, or to access a copy of the VCPS event logs. SCP provides the higher security of encrypted data transmission and is enabled automatically when you enable SSH. By default, both FTP and SCP are enabled. Note If you enable SSH for high-security authentication and encryption, disable FTP. Allowing file transfers to the VCPS through FTP compromises the high security you implemented by choosing SSH. To disable FTP, you must be an Administrator. See the User s Guide for more information. To access the VCPS through FTP or SCP, the default login and password are apc and apc for an Administrator. 14 Recover From a Lost Password You can reset the user name and password for VCPS. 1. Press and hold the Reset button on the VCPS for 10 seconds. The status LED will change from solid green to solid orange. 2. After 10 seconds, the orange LED will blink four times. Release the button. 3. The status LED will be solid orange and then begin blinking as VCPS restores its defaults. This will take up to two minutes. 4. The status LED will blink green when defaults have been restored. The user name and password will be reset to the default of apc. For proper security, change the password immediately. Warning Pressing the Reset button for ten seconds resets all VCPS settings. 10 Vertical Console Port Server

15 Firmware Upgrades The VCPS supports upgradable firmware using binary firmware files provided by APC either through the internet or on CD. Each of these files contains protection mechanisms to ensure that the data contained in the file is not corrupted before or during the transfer operation. When new firmware is transmitted to the VCPS, the program code is updated and new features become available. Benefits of upgrading firmware Upgrading the firmware on the VCPS has the following benefits: New firmware has the latest bug fixes and performance improvements. New features become available for immediate use. Keeping the firmware versions consistent across your network ensures that all VCPSs support the same features in the same manner. Firmware files (VCPS) A firmware version for the VCPS uses the following basic format: apc_hwx_vcps_version_build.bin apc: Indicates that this is an APC file. hwx: Identifies the version of the VCPS hardware that will run this binary file. vcps: Identifies the application as being for the VCPS. version: The version number of the application file. For example, a code of 100 would indicate version build: The build number of the application file. For example, a code of 623 would indicate build number 623. bin: Indicates that this is a binary firmware image. Obtain the latest firmware version You can obtain the firmware you need for a firmware upgrade from the download section of the APC Web site Vertical Console Port Server 11

16 Firmware Upgrades Firmware file transfer methods After the latest firmware has been downloaded from the APC Web site, use one of the following methods to upgrade the VCPS firmware: Upload the firmware to a VCPS using FTP or SCP. Download the firmware from an FTP server (if your company or agency has a centralized FTP server from which to obtain firmware). Instructions for using FTP or SCP. For you to be able to use FTP to upgrade a single VCPS over the network: The VCPS must be connected to the network. The FTP or SSH server must be enabled at the VCPS. The VCPS must have its TCP/IP settings (System IP, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway addresses) configured. Upload firmware to a VCPS To upload firmware to a VCPS: 1. Open a command prompt window on a computer that is connected to the network. Go to the directory that contains the firmware upgrade files, and list the files. For the directory C:\apc, the commands would be those shown in bold: C:\>cd apc C:\apc>dir The file listed for a VCPS, for example, might be the following: apc_hw10_vcps_100_623.bin To use SCP, skip to step Open an FTP client session: C:\apc>ftp 3. Type open and the IP address of the VCPS, and press ENTER. If the Port setting for FTP Server has changed from its default of 21, you must use the non-default value in the FTP command. a. For some FTP clients, you must use a colon to add the port number to the end of the IP address. b. For Windows FTP clients, separate the port number from the IP address by a space. For example, if the VCPS s FTP Server Port setting has been changed from its default of 21, such as to 21000, you would use the following command for a Windows FTP client transferring a file to a VCPS with an IP address of ftp> open Vertical Console Port Server

17 Firmware Upgrades ati 4. Log on using an Administrator user name and password. (apc is the default for both.) 5. The firmware image file must be transferred to the local firmware directory named firmware. The file must be renamed vcps.bin. For example: ftp> bin ftp> cd firmware ftp> put apc_hw10_vcps_100_623.bin vcps.bin 6. When FTP confirms the transfer, type quit to close the session. Go to step 8. To use Secure CoPy (SCP) to upgrade the firmware: 7. Use an SCP command line to transfer the firmware module to the VCPS. The following example assumes a VCPS IP address of , and a firmware module of apc_hw10_vcps_100_623.bin and is typed on one line: scp apc_hw10_vcps_100_623.bin apc@ :/firmware/vcps.bin 8. In the control console, enter loadfw -c to make the image is a valid VCPS firmware image. After checks have been performed, an MD5 hash is displayed. This MD5 hash with the MD5 hash must match the.md5 file that accompanied the firmware image file. 9. In the control console, enter loadfw -wto write the firmware image to the VCPS flash memory. 10. Enter reboot to have your changes take effect. Download firmware from an FTP server To download firmware from an FTP server: 1. In the control console, enter: loadfw -f <username>[:<password>]@<host>: <path> [-p <portnum>] This starts the FTP client on the VCPS and downloads the firmware to /firmware/ vcps.bin on the VCPS. 2. In the control console, enter loadfw -c to make the image is a valid VCPS firmware image. After checks have been performed, an MD5 hash is displayed. This MD5 hash with the MD5 hash must match the.md5 file that accompanied the firmware image file. 3. In the control console, enter loadfw -w to write the firmware image to the VCPS flash memory. 20 Warranty and Service Limited warranty APC warrants the VCPS to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of two years from the date of purchase. Its obligation under this warranty is limited to repairing or replacing, at its own sole option, any such defective products. This warranty does not apply to equipment that has been damaged by accident, negligence, or misapplication or has been altered or modified in any way. This warranty applies only to the original purchaser. Warranty limitations Except as provided herein, APC makes no warranties, expressed or implied, including warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. Some jurisdictions do not permit limitation or exclusion of implied warranties; therefore, the aforesaid limitation(s) or exclusion(s) may not apply to the purchaser. Except as provided above, in no event will APC be liable for direct, indirect, special, incidental, or consequential damages arising out of the use of this product, even if advised of the possibility of such damage. Specifically, APC is not liable for any costs, such as lost profits or revenue, loss of equipment, loss of use of equipment, loss of software, loss of data, costs of substitutes, claims by third parties, or otherwise. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights, which vary according to jurisdiction. Obtaining service To obtain support for problems with your VCPS: 0 1. Note the serial number and date of purchase. The serial number is a twelve-digit number located on the back of the VCPS on the safety label. 2. Contact Customer Support at a phone number on the back cover of this document. A technician will try to help you solve the problem by phone. 3. If you must return the product, the technician will give you a Return Material Authorization (RMA) number. 21 Warranty and Service 4. Pack the unit carefully. The warranty does not cover damage sustained in transit. Enclose a letter with your name, address, RMA number, and daytime phone number; a copy of the sales receipt; and a check as payment, if applicable. 5. Mark the RMA number clearly on the outside of the shipping carton. 6. Ship by insured, prepaid carrier to the address provided by the Customer Support technician. Vertical Console Port Server 17

22 Life-Support Policy General policy American Power Conversion (APC) does not recommend the use of any of its products in the following situations: In life-support applications where failure or malfunction of the APC product can be reasonably expected to cause failure of the life-support device or to affect significantly its safety or effectiveness. In direct patient care. APC will not knowingly sell its products for use in such applications unless it receives in writing assurances satisfactory to APC that (a) the risks of injury or damage have been minimized, (b) the customer assumes all such risks, and (c) the liability of American Power Conversion is adequately protected under the circumstances. Examples of life-support devices The term life-support device includes but is not limited to neonatal oxygen analyzers, nerve stimulators (whether used for anesthesia, pain relief, or other purposes), autotransfusion devices, blood pumps, defibrillators, arrhythmia detectors and alarms, pacemakers, hemodialysis systems, peritoneal dialysis systems, neonatal ventilator incubators, ventilators (for adults and infants), anesthesia ventilators, infusion pumps, and any other devices designated as critical by the U.S. FDA. Hospital-grade wiring devices and leakage current protection may be ordered as options on many APC UPS systems. APC does not claim that units with these modifications are certified or listed as hospital-grade by APC or any other organization.
