1 SP PRO Communications LAN Connectivity Introduction This application note provides information to enable the connection of an SP PRO to a Local Area Network (LAN). Information provided is targeted at persons who are familiar with basic LAN configuration and operation plus installation and configuration of software. The application note deals specifically with installation of software under Microsoft Windows XP but is also applicable to Windows Vista and 7. NOTICE SP LINK and the SP PRO(via a serial to ethernet adaptor) supports connection via a network. Requirements SP LINK 2.1 or later versions 1 Perle Device Manager Software 2 Spare LAN port Serial to Ethernet device such as - Perle IOLAN DS1 Lantronix UDS2100 Lantronix WiBox 2100E Note: This information and concepts can be applied to any serial to Ethernet device however this application note will specifically detail the Perle IOLAN DS1. 1 SP LINK is available from 2 Software is available under Utilities from The configuration software is only required to be installed on a PC being used to configure the IOLAN. 2 SP PRO Serial to IOLAN Device Connections The serial port of the SP PRO must be connected through to the IOLAN port. The modem serial cable and the cross-over cable supplied with the SP PRO are suitable. The IOLAN port and the serial cable are both male connector type so the supplied cross-over cable must be used. The IOLAN device can be powered directly from the SP PRO Auxiliary power output or via an AC plug pack. The advantage of using the auxiliary power means if the AC output is off, communications is maintained. An optional auxiliary power cable can be purchased from Selectronic and then wired to a connector that suits the serial to Ethernet device. Note: Auxiliary is a limited DC power source suitable for one device only. The Ethernet port of the IOLAN device must be connected to a spare port in the existing network hub via a suitable network (straight through CAT5 RJ45-RJ45) cable. SP PRO Serial Port Configuration The SP PRO serial port and IOLAN serial port must be set to the same speed. Ethernet is easily capable of sending data from the SP PRO Port 1 default speed of and provides the most responsive connection. Using defaults means that no change to SP PRO configuration is required. In this example, SP PRO Port 1 is to be used at default so must be set in the IOLAN. Note: Port 2 default speed is Existing Network Configuration An unallocated IP address in the local network needs to be assigned to the IOLAN. The address chosen must be suitable for your network. Examples to follow will use a network with the following details: Local PC IP Address: Subnet Mask: IOLAN device IP Address: Subnet Mask: Note: If a DHCP Server is in operation on the network, ensure that the IOLAN is always provided the same address or the fixed address chosen for IOLAN is outside scope of DHCP server address range. 3 Perle IOLAN DS1 Configuration The IOLAN must be connected to the network and powered before performing these steps. Run the Perle Device Manager. If the IOLAN can be found on the network, the following screen will be shown, listing the IOLAN. 3. Click Ok to connect to IOLAN. A password will be required. 1. Select the IOLAN and click Assign IP 4. Default IOLAN password is superuser. The system will then present you with the following configuration screen. 2. Enter the IP address for your IOLAN. The above shows address used in this example. Click Assign IP. 5. Double click Serial, then select Serial Ports. TN0027 Revision 05 3 of 6 POWER PERFORMANCE PASSION

4 6. Select Port 1 and press Edit 9. Select Listen for connection, set TCP Port then click on Hardware 7. Click Change Profile. 10. Select same Speed as SP PRO Port then OK. The above shows as used in this example. 8. Click on TCP Socket, then Ok. TN0027 Revision 05 4 of 6

5 11. Click Download All Changes 14. Click Reboot IOLAN 12. Click Yes After a moment you should see 15. Click Yes 13. Click OK 16. Click Ok 17. Click No The IOLAN is now ready to accept a connection from SP LINK. The Device Manager Screen will go blank. It takes a minute or two for the IOLAN to reboot. 6 SP LINK Connection Settings Run SP LINK Select Site Information Select Connection Settings Set Connection Type to Network Enter IP Address Enter address for your IOLAN Enter Port Note: SP LINK Port and IOLAN TCP Port must match. SP LINK is now set to connect through to the IOLAN device. Click Connection, Connect. SP LINK will connect through to the IOLAN then the SP PRO in the normal way.
