This article with the accompanying sample shows you how to use IBM WebSphere Portlet Factory Version (hereafter called Portlet Factory) with Smartphone devices. This article is one in a collection of articles and samples that illustrate techniques for developing with Portlet Factory. For an introduction to developing with Portlet Factory, you may want look at the introductory tutorials that are available both in the product help and on that web site. Prerequisites You should have a basic familiarity with Portlet Factory and be able to create and run Portlet Factory models. You should also be somewhat familiar with profile selection handlers. You must be using Portlet Factory or higher. The Dojo and Tutorial and Samples, Building Models feature sets will need to be included in your project. Introduction This sample shows how to use Portlet Factory's dynamic profiling capability to build a single application model that can support both smartphones and full-sized desktop browsers. For smartphones, your application can display smaller pages that fit nicely in the smaller smartphone display, while full-sized browsers can display a larger page. You can build these different variations from the same source model, easily switching between variations as you develop the model, to see what each will look like. There is a User Agent Switcher Extension available for Firefox that will allow developers to test their applications with different user agents using the browser. Another approach is to use device simulators when the actual device is not available during development.

2 Sample description The following describes the sample model provided by this article. SmartphoneDeviceSample Portlet This portlet will display orders based on profiles for each mobile device. If the user is accessing the portlet via a mobile device, such as an iphone, the portlet will display fewer columns to accommodate the screen on the mobile device. If the user is accessing the portlet from a browser, the complete table of order information will display. SmartphoneDeviceSampleps Profile Set This profile set is used to provide profiles for different mobile devices and the selection handler used to determine which profile is used. smartphonetype Selection Handler The smartphonetype_handler.xml is the handler definition file. This file creates the handler name that is available in the Profile Set s Profile Selection Settings. The logic done by the selection handler is in the class file com.ibm.samples.smartprofile.smartphonetypeselectionhandler. SmartPhoneTypeSelectionHandler.java The SmartPhoneTypeSelectionHandler.java looks at the request, then compares the User- Agent in the request to a list of mobile device types in the mobiledevices.properties file, and returns a profile to use based on the User-Agent in the request. mobiledevices.properties The mobiledevices.properties contains a list of mobile devices. The selection handler looks at this properties file and matches the user-agent with the list. If the mobile device is in the list, then the appropriate profile is returned for that device. Otherwise the Browser profile will be used. Table 1. Download the sample ZIP file and import it into a project using the File, Import, WebSphere Portlet Factory Archive command. 2. Publish the SmartPhoneDeviceSample.model to a Portal server. 3. Place the Smartphone Device Sample portlet on a page. 4. View the Smartphone Device Sample portlet with a mobile device.
