1 Syllabus Course Number: MSC 501 Course Title: Object-Oriented Programming in Java. Course Description: MSC 501. Object-Oriented Programming in Java (3). Introduces foundation of programming through simple development of programs using the Java programming language. In-depth investigation of programming fundamentals: mathematical expressions, variables, assignment statements, functions and conditionals. Introductory use of Object-Oriented language features including classes, objects, data hiding, inheritance, polymorphism, and exception handling. Prerequisite Courses: N/A Course Overview This course introduces students to programming in the Java programming language. Topics include mathematical expressions, variables, assignment statements, functions and conditionals. In addition, this course covers problem-solving methods, algorithm development, program structures, abstract data types, simple data and file structures, and program development in a modular, object-oriented (OO) manner. Introductory use of OO language features including data hiding, inheritance, polymorphism, and exception handling. Ultimately, programming is a skill that requires the ability to put designs into practice. The only way to succeed is to practice this skill. Therefore, this course will require significant amount of time each week to complete the programming assignments. If you are not willing or able to spend the necessary time, please reconsider whether this is the correct time to attend this class. College for Computer & Information Sciences 3333 Regis Boulevard, Denver, CO regis.edu 2018 Regis University Revised: 6/4/2018 Page 1 of 6

2 Course Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, learners should be able to: Learn about recent development in computing and software development. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of programming fundamentals: mathematical expressions, variables, assignment statements, functions and conditionals through the development of basic programming assignments. Design, implement, test, and debug programs that use each of the following fundamental programming constructs: basic computation; simple input/output; sequential, conditional, and iterative control structures; and classes and methods. Choose appropriate constructs for each programming task. Solve problems using various Java language and library features. Understand and use of Object-Oriented concepts to develop reusable, reliable, and maintainable software. Course Materials: Required Texts: There are no costs to access the following text online when used for individual and educational purposes. Note that some pages might not be available in the free preview. Download recommended. From the A-Z Database page, select Safari Books Online. You will then need to log in to Safari Books Online using your Regis credentials. Once you are inside Safari Books Online, search by author or title. Be sure to log out when you are finished each time. Paul J. Deitel; Harvey Deitel. (2017). Java How to Program, Early Objects, 11th Edition. ISBN- 13: Available for free access online through Regis Library A-Z Databases at Technology Tools: 1. A PC-compatible computer system running a version of the Windows operating system, and administrator rights to install new software. 2. The Java programming environment (Instructions for downloading are included in the WorldClass online course Content) a. Java Development Kit (JDK) b. Eclipse Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for Java Developers. As with most of Regis learning activities, using various software applications to accomplish assignments requires students to exercise a great deal of responsibility for learning how to successfully operate the software applications Regis University MSCC 501 Syllabus Page 2 of 6
