1 *** TROUBLESHOOTING TIP *** If you are experiencing errors with your deliverable 2 setup which deliverable 3 is built upon, delete the deliverable 2 project within Eclipse, and delete the non working newbas directory and subdirectories from your hard disk. You must delete the old project from your file system before recreating it in Eclipse or you will get an error. Before deleting any files or directories, be sure to copy any files you wish to save to another location. **BE SURE TO SAVE YOUR DELIVERABLE 2 1_NearestNeighborChoice.csv file before deleting old deliverable 2 contents as this file will be used to compare to your Deliverable 3 result. Restart Eclipse and copy your deliverable 1 project to a new project called newbas and repeat steps 1, 2 and 3 above. This should give you a clean newbas project that can be used to rerun deliverable 2 and run deliverable Download and extract the deliverable3 bas.zip file to your local computer. The next step will move these files into the correct location. This file contains code changes to support deliverables 2 and 3 and should be error free. 2. Using Windows File Explorer, navigate to the source code directory for your newbas folder on your hard disk. If your base directory is c:\it691 and you called your deliverable 2 project newbas, navigate to c:\it691\newbas\src\bas. If your newbas project is not working or has errors (red symbols in the Eclipse Package Explorer), follow the troubleshooting tip above. 3. Copy the extracted contents from deliverable3 bas.zip to the c:\it691\newbas\src\bas directory. The previous TestResult.java file will be overwritten. 4. Start Eclipse and open the newbas project. 5. Using the <F5> function key on your keyboard, or selecting File Refresh from the Eclipse command bar, refresh the project so the files you copied into the project are recognized by Eclipse 1

2 6. Your newbas project should look like this: 7. If needed, adjust project memory settings. If you recreated the newbas project you will need to do this step. Otherwise, deliverable 2 set the memory settings correctly, so it is not necessary to repeat. 2

3 a. If you try to run the application without adjusting the memory configuration for the project you will receive a message similar to the following and your Eclipse Console will report errors: b. To correct this condition, adjust the project memory settings as you did for the first deliverable. First, run the BAS.java application and select Run as a Java Application if prompted. Once the BAS starts, from the command bar, select Project Properties Run/Debug Settings. Highlight BAS and select Edit. You can also double click on BAS. Select the Arguments tab and navigate to the VM arguments pane. BE SURE TO PRESS APPLY. c. If your computer has sufficient memory, enter Xmx768M Xms768M. The application will not run with less memory. 8. Run a previous experiment to verify the project setup is correct and everything is working as expected: a. Launch the BAS.java (run as java application) from your newbas project in Eclipse. 3

4 b. Select the deliverable 1 test and train data files, and run the experiment. c. Select Apply Dichotomy Model when the previous step finishes. d. When the processing completes, select Run Test & View Result Observe the Eclipse Console (bottom right of your screen). You should see compare messages scrolling in the window. e. Depending on the speed of your computer and the amount of memory you allocated to the application, this test can take up to 30 minutes to complete. When the test finishes, a comma delimited file is created with the results. This file is located in the BAS results folder under your project. f. When the test completes, the following will display: 4

5 (Optional) You can view the log by clicking on the Test ran successfully message: The name of the output file hard coded in the file is Spring2009DesktopFable_nChoices.csv. The data is actually the LaptopFree data you used in deliverable 1. We will rename this output file in this deliverable. 9. Code Changes (ProcessClassifierOutput.java): In Eclipse, open the ProcessClassifierOutput.java and make the following changes (to open the file, double click on the file name or right click + open. You will need to edit the String 5

6 outputfile, String[] filenames and the last String condition statement as well as the K_NEAREST_NEIGHBOR value. This is located in your newbas project. The output file will be overwritten with each run. Before to close open output files before running a second time. If the output file is open, an error will result. If you wish to save previous runs, rename the output file, it691 deliverable3.csv from your file system. If Eclipse complains with an error, open the it691 deliverable3.csv file and delete the blank row at the top of the file if one exists and save and close the file. 8 12. The previous step created a file in your BAS results directory for the newbas project. If you made the changes requested above, this file should be named 3_NearestNeightborChoice.csv.
