8 Chapter 1 Baseline chapter of bachelor thesis 1.1 Theory overview Timeline Timeline is graphic way to represent some list of events. Events in timeline are always in chronological order. There are many types of timelines and in many of them there can be other properties such a place,category,importance etc,so in some timelines event can be divided not just by a date but also by other properties.timelines can be used in almost everywhere. Personal timelines are big help for people who has busy life or bad memory,in corporations, timelines can be used to represent work plan,where employee can see amount of work which is need to be done in certain time period. Timelines can be also very helpful in schools. Variety of using timelines in school is wide. The last type is,for me, most important,in my bachelor thesis I will try make timeline application which is a most suitable for teachers. Many of other application are very good,offers many possibilities,has a nice design,but none of timelines I tried, was focused on better linking between events. In my application will be more possibilities to link single events. One event from one timeline can be linked with some other event from other timeline,or events can even contains it own timelines Android OS Android is open-source operating system for mobile devices. Android is developed by Google inc. and his market share in mobile operating systems is 81,5.Android is a mobile operating system (OS) based on the Linux kernel and designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.initially developed by Android, Inc., which Google bought in 2005, Android was unveiled in 2007, along with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance a consortium of hardware, 7

9 software, and telecommunication companies devoted to advancing open standards for mobile devices. 1.2 Technology overview Choice of technology Choice of technology took me quite a time,because i had to decide what will be best for success of my application. I was deciding primary between so called web frameworks and pure android. The biggest advantage of web frameworks is multi platfom support,which means they can run on ios,android and windows mobile. Second advantage of web frameworks is that they are using basic web developer lanagauges such a PHP,HTML,CSS and JS whereas I am familiar with these technologies,there was for me no need to study a new technology. The main dissadvantage of these technologies is performance and battery consumtion. Performance and battery consumption was in average 50specifically battery consumption is problem number one in mobile devices. Programing pure android application in JAVA brings a better perfomance, better battery consumption and better access to android features,on the other side,app will be develop only for one platfom. My final decision was a pure android application. After research of similiar applications I found out that there was way more apps for ios, than for Android. There are really few android apps for creating timelines and all fo them are only really simply apps so there is no big competition unlike in ios development. Application will be faster with better battery consumption which gives it bigger chances to success JAVA Java is a object-oriented programming language.java code can run on all platforms that support Java without the need for recompilation. The original and reference implementation Java compilers, virtual machines, and class libraries were originally released by Sun under proprietary licences. As of May 2007, in compliance with the specifications of the Java Community Process, Sun relicensed most of its Java technologies under the GNU General Public License. Others have also developed alternative implementations of these Sun technologies, such as the GNU Compiler for Java (bytecode compiler), GNU Classpath (standard libraries), and IcedTea-Web (browser plugin for applets). The latest version is Java 8, which is the only version currently supported for free by Oracle, although earlier versions are supported both by Oracle and other companies on a commercial basis. 8

10 JAVA and GOOGLE Google and Android, Inc. have chosen to use Java as a key pillar in the creation of the Android operating system, an open source mobile operating system. Although the Android operating system, built on the Linux kernel, was written largely in C, the Android SDK uses the Java language as the basis for Android applications. However, Android does not use the Java virtual machine, instead using Java bytecode as an intermediate step and ultimately targeting Android s own Dalvik virtual machine or more recently Android Runtime which actually compiles applications to native machine code upon installation. Android also does not provide the full Java SE standard library, although the Android class library does include an independent implementation of a large subset of it. This led to a legal dispute between Oracle and Google. On May 7, 2012, a San Francisco jury found that if APIs could be copyrighted, then Google had infringed Oracle s copyrights by the use of Java in Android devices Android software delopment Android software development is the process by which new applications are created for the Android operating system. Android SDK The Android software development kit (SDK) includes set of development tools such as debugger, libraries, a handset emulator based on QEMU, documentation, sample code, and tutorials.currently supported development platforms include computers running Linux (any modern desktop Linux distribution), Mac OS X or later, and Windows XP or later. When you to want a develop android applications adn try it on your devices, you need to have ADB software installed,so you can connect your phone to PC into developer mode. Android Debug Bridge The Android Debug Bridge (ADB) is a toolkit included in the Android SDK package. It consists of both client and server-side programs that communicate with one another. The ADB is typically accessed through the command-line interface,[18] although numerous graphical user interfaces exist to control ADB 9

11 1.2.4 Android studio Android Studio is the official integrated development environment (IDE) for developing for the Android platform. It was announced on May 16, 2013 at the Google I/O conference. Android Studio is freely available under the Apache License 2.0.Android. *Features Gradle-based build support Android-specific refactoring and quick fixes. Lint tools to catch performance, usability, version compatibility and other problems ProGuard integration and app-signing capabilities. Template-based wizards to create common Android designs and components. A rich layout editor that allows users to drag-and-drop UI components, option to preview layouts on multiple screen configurations Support for building Android Wear apps Built-in support for Google Cloud Platform, enabling integration with Google Cloud Messaging and App Engine I choose android studio because it it in my opinion the best application for android development, has a great support and many features which can make developing easy and more entertaining. 10

Mostly of these features are only for premium accounts what is understandable. Best of these features are JSON - you can get all data in JSON format, Embed - you can create emebeded link for your timeline, PDF - you can create PDF file contains your timeline and so on. This timeline offers really many features so orientation in it can be sometimes more difficult but this app has very good helper, with this helper you can find out what almost every button do. 15
