1 Jerry Gulla 75 Ridge Street Arlington, MA (781) Objective Languages And Systems Primary Experience A challenging position in software engineering that will allow me to utilize my knowledge and experience in the computer industry. Java (JDOM/SWING/RMI/JDBC/JSP), XML/XPATH, SQL, Win32, XPATH, C++, Jini, HTML Win 9x/NT/2K/XP, MySQL, Postgres, Oracle, NAS/SAN, Linux/UNIX, XML/XSD/DTD, BSD Virtual Iron Software 2005 to Present Principal Software Engineer Team member of the software group responsible for the management software of Virtual Iron s Virtualization Manager product. As a member of the team I have worked on server-side and client side applications, adding new features and bug fixes to both the back-end API and the Swing based GUI. Work was mostly in Java, but also was responsible for some Python development. Investigated ways to manage third party virtualization products such as Xen and VMWare. New areas I was responsible for included IPMI management of servers (both on the back-end API and the GUI). Product uses a distributed object oriented database to store and manipulate configuration data. Revivio, Inc to 2005 Principal Software Engineer Member of the appliance management team and most recently of the advanced product development team. Was one of the primary architects and implementers of the infrastructure to manage Revivio s Continuous Data Protection Appliance, the CPS The CPS-1200 is a Continuous Data Protection appliance for SANs, allowing a customer to recover or roll back data to any point in time instantly. The appliance is based on Linux and consists of four nodes. The management code scaled and ran across all nodes in an n-tier architecture. The majority of the management code is written in Java, using standard J2EE standard design patterns (RMI, Delegates, DAOs, etc.). Was responsible for several major areas of functionality, such as the configuration system, the alert system, the service launcher and all SQL/JDBC code for the various management database tables. Databases used were MySQL and Postgres. Was the main developer of the configuration system, which used XML to persist configuration object state across C++ and Java. Wrote the code to convert objects to and from XML, as well as the code to add/modify/search the configuration. Wrote a transactional custom XML database for the configuration system using JDOM and XPATH. Wrote the DAOs that implemented create, insert, update and delete methods. Wrote custom queries using XPATH. Used JDOM to manipulate the XML configuration tree. The XML configuration was validated against an XSD. Designed and wrote Alert system, which allowed alerts to be generated, logged, actions to be performed, acknowledged and escalated. Created a system where developers could add their own alerts to the system by editing a simple XML file (the alert catalog), then C++ and Java files would be generated to incorporate the new alerts. The system allowed alert text and actions to be changed without changing any code, only the catalog. Because the alert system generated Java and C++ files from the catalog, developers were able to catch any errors surrounding unknown alerts at compile time. Catalog generation ensured no duplicate alert IDs were in the system. Responsible for the code that managed the Java management services for the appliance. This consisted of a C++ wrapper that invoked a Java VM, loaded the main class file and started the Java code. A corresponding Java class was responsible for starting other Java threads. In addition to running a Java
2 class, the C++ wrapper also implemented various native methods needed by the Java management code. The Java services employed RMI to communicate with the management GUI, using delegates to abstract the communication protocol. The GUI was a stand-alone Java Swing application, launched via Java WebStart. Most recent position was in the advanced development group, working on the next-generation product. Responsibilities included revising existing product architecture to enhance scalability, as well as prototype the new design. Made scalability improvements to the configuration system, and investigated the use of SOAP for a management transport. Network Engines, Inc. December 1999 to October 2002 Software Engineering Manager and Principal Software Architect Held various positions and worked on various projects. Was principal architect of ClusterMonitor and AdminEngine, a series of management appliances for clustered servers. Designed UI as well as backend architecture. Used Java, RMI and C/C++ for server side, HTML and Java Applets for UI. Also was principal design architect for next-generation AdminEngine product, using cutting-edge technologies such as Jini. Worked with product marketing to ensure requirements were captured. Worked with human factors team to develop a totally new UI. Developed project plan to transition to the new design and helped make appropriate engineering tradeoffs to ensure on-time schedule. Worked on implementation for various server-side components, as well as assisted with UI implementation. As a member of Network Engines Advanced Engineering group, I was part of a two-person team reporting directly to the CEO/CTO. The team was responsible for setting the technological direction of the company, in both hardware and software. Evaluated emerging software technologies to determine applicability for our products. Also evaluated other companies for possible acquisition or inclusion of their technology. Assisted in the development of StorageEngine, a NAS appliance. Gave advice on technology choices, integration with Network Engines appliance family, and assisted in the implementation of server-side management components using Java/JNI and C/C++. Was a member of a design team for Frontier, a next-generation SAN/NAS clustered storage appliance. Design responsibilities centered on management of the appliance. Developed a task list as well sizing for each task. Investigated feasibility of the project, by setting up a cluster of servers using a SAN and GFS, a Linux clustered file system. Was to lead the software team creating the management software (the project never left the proof concept phase, due to Network Engines shift in business plan away from storage). My most recent role at Network Engines was the chief software resource, acting as lead and for all internal software projects, including an SDK for interacting with proprietary components of Network Engines servers, as well as libraries for web and command-line remote management (using Java, JSP and C). I also played a key role in dealing with any Network Engines customer, giving advice on Linux, Windows and software strategies. Network Objects, Inc to 1999 Senior Consultant January 1999 December 1999 Architect and senior developer at Network Engines. Designed a 3-tier architecture using Java, RMI, C and JDBC. Java was used to communicate to a Windows NT service using JNI and XML, browserbased applets using RMI, and a database using JDBC. The system allows for the monitoring and configuration of in-house developed clustering technology for Windows NT. Also assisted in developing and executing performance tests designed to stress the system.
3 August 1998 January 1999 Completed work for a local financial company on a training-scheduling tool written using Java (version 1.1), RMI and JDBC. This system uses a browser-based mechanism to access corporate databases (Oracle) to automate classroom scheduling, and course registration/evaluation. The system is designed to perform under a constant load of concurrent users. Sun Microsystems, JavaSoft Division, Chelmsford, MA, 1996 to 1998 Distributed Computing Group Lead Engineer, Java Jumpstart Engineering lead for the Java Jumpstart product, a searchable CD-ROM containing Java technology, technical articles and documentation. Responsibilities included writing technical specification, product development and working with various third parties. Modified and integrated Java search technology and content from Javaworld, the Java Developer s Connection and other sources. Worked with marketing, legal and other departments to ensure timely releases. During it s first year, JumpStart outsold all other Javasoft products combined in both revenue and units sold. Directed 1-2 other engineers during various development stages. Java Native Interface Conversion Modified Object Serialization to use the new Java Native Interface for Java 2. Java OS Added Object Serialization and Remote Method Invocation functionality to JavaOS 1.0. Netscape Plug-In Developed Netscape Plug-In to incorporate new Java JDK functionality. Reverse-engineered Netscape Navigator s (version 3.5) VM and added support for RMI on JDK Involved modifying native Object Serialization code and modifying tests to ensure compatibility. Sun Microsystems, SunSoft Division, Chelmsford, MA, 1995 to 1996 PC Network Engineering As a member of the PC Network Engineering team, I was responsible for various components of SunSoft s PC-NFS Pro software. Most my programming work for this product is in Win32, C++ and MFC 4.x. A more detailed explanation of my responsibilities follows. FTP Application Designed and wrote a Windows 95/NT FTP application using the Microsoft WinInet API. The application is written in C++ and MFC 4.x and is modeled after the Windows 95 Explorer. This FTP client supports drag-and-drop with the Windows shell, as well as in-place file rename. The application is fully internationalized, as it will be translated into several different languages. Windows 95 Desktop Enumeration OCX/ActiveX Control Wrote a 32 bit OLE/ActiveX control to enumerate the Windows 95 desktop. The control can be used in any application that supports embedded controls, but was primarily intended to be used with Microsoft Developer Studio. Win32 Migration Responsible for formulating a plan to migrate 16 bit applications to Win32. Also assisted in porting the PCNFS Pro bit WINSOCK DLL to 32 bits. OEM Engineer Engineering contact with First Floor Software for their Smart Bookmarks 2.0 utility. Responsible for
4 managing code drops, install / configuration issues and QA coordination. Turning Point Software, Newton, MA, 1993 to 1995 Senior Software Engineer Turning Point is a consulting firm specializing in high quality commercial software for Windows, DOS and Macintosh. Responsibilities included Windows 3.1 programming using both Visual C++ 1.x and Borland C++ 4.x. Because of Turning Point s small size, I was afforded the chance to work on several complete development efforts, in addition to setting up, configuring and administering the company Internet connection. A more complete description of my projects is described below. Client Interface Currently developing a client program for a partnership management system using Borland C and the OWL 2.5 class library for an area bank. The application communicates with an SQL server via ODBC to retrieve and modify data, as well as generate and print reports. Wireless Sports Results Transmission/Reception Developed proof of concept demo for Ex Machina for the US Olympic Committee. The system simulated Olympics results downloaded from the central results computer and then transmitted the results to a hand-held paging device. The data was then retrieved automatically onto a laptop computer to display the results. The application also supported printing of the results in official Olympic format, including graphics and logos. The demo was written in a mixture of C and Visual Basic. Successfully demonstrated the system to the US Olympic committee in Atlanta, GA. Report Viewer Developed a Windows custom control to display financial reports. The viewer design was analogous to a read-only word processor. The viewer was able to handle multiple fonts and style, as well as display large reports. Design emphasized speed, both in loading the report and navigating within the report. Both printing and print preview were supported using any standard Windows printer. Flash Card Program Primary Windows developer for STASH, a flash card program for Widows and Macintosh. The program allowed for up to 1500 cards and 250 topics, and required writing cross-platform, as well as Windows specific code to print flash cards in a variety of formats. Development was done in Visual C. Responsible for the overall architecture of the Windows-specific software. CAE-Link, Binghamton, New York, 1989 to 1993 Commercial Products Engineering Member of a small team developing software for an air traffic control simulator using C, Microsoft Windows and networked PC's.
