2 Grade Center Revised user interface (Web 2.0 style) New toolbar Inline editing More flexibility in display (Full Grade Center, Smart Views, View by user, etc.) Report generation (now possible to generate grade reports for each student)

3 Grade Center Grade calculations, e.g. drop lowest score, average grade, maximum, minimum, total, and weighting Grade History showing who made what changes and when to the Grade Center Ability to send s directly from the Grade Center

4 Grade Center When you use the assignments feature, assessments or gradable discussion boards, grade columns are automatically added to the Grade Center. You can also add columns and calculated columns manually, as well as remove and hide columns that you no longer need to see.

5 Grade Center Access the Grade Center from the Control Panel under Assessment. Blackboard Inc. 2007

6 Grade Center The Grade Center resembles a table containing rows and columns. Student names are automatically added to the Grade Center when they enroll.

7 Grade Center Interface The Grade Center interface contains the following default columns: Name (Last Name, First Name) Username Student ID Last Access Availability Weighted Total Total Columns are created automatically when you create: Assessments Assignments Gradable Discussion forums Blackboard Inc. 2007

8 Status of Grade Center Items The following symbols represent the status of Grade Center items: Symbol Description - (dash) Item is not started Attempt In Progress Has not been submitted for grading yet Needs Grading - Item is submitted and needs to be graded Grading Error - Grade Center error, but seldom seen Completed - the grade or score is not displayed Grade Modified Manually score manually overridden by instructor External Grade that has been uploaded Exempt - user is not required to complete gradable item Column Not Visible to Users does not display in the student view Blackboard Inc. 2007

9 Setting Up Categories Default categories: Assignment Discussion Survey Test Assigning categories permits filtering and weighting grades by category Manage --> Categories --> Add Category

10 Adding Gradable Items as Columns You can add columns for items created outside of Blackboard When adding Grade Center columns, you can: Add columns to a category Select grade display options Make columns available to students Include columns in final grade calculation

11 Add Grade Column 1. In the Grade Center, click the Add Grade Column button. 2. Enter a name for the column in the Column Name box. (Here you may also add options in the Column Information section.) 3. Enter a point value in the Points Possible box. (Select options in Dates and Options if necessary.) 4. Click Submit.

12 Add Calculated Grade Column 1. In the Grade Center, click the Add Calculated Column button. 2. Select one of the following options: a) To add a column of weighted grades, select Weighted. b) To add a column of grade totals, select Total. c) To add a column of average grades, select Average. d) To add a column of minimum or maximum values, select Minimum/Maximum 3. Enter a name for the column in the Column Name box and click Submit.

13 Modify Grade Columns You can modify a Grade Center item by: Changing the item name, points possible or the category Modifying display options Removing an item

14 Changing Item Order Gradable items are added as columns left to right in order created You can sort the columns by: Categories Due Date Creation Date Points Possible Display Name placeholder

15 Manage Grade Center The Manage button in the menu is used to: Upload grades Download grades Add or modify categories Create or modify smart views, grading periods or grading schemas Organize grade center

16 Download Grades 1. In the Grade Center, click the Manage button 2. Select Download from the menu 3. In the Data section, select the data you want to download 4. In the Options section, select the tabdelimited format and don t include hidden information

17 Download Grades 5. Click Submit 6. Click Download and choose Save File 7. Once the file is finished downloading, open Excel first (Do not double click file to open or some of the data will get distorted, and you will be unable to upload the file back to the Grade Center. If you accidentally double click, close file without saving

18 Download Grades 8. Use the Open command in MS Excel to locate and open the Bb file you downloaded. (The generic form of the filename is: BMCC_courseid_fullgc_year-mo-dayhour-min-sec.xls) If you are using Office 2007, you will receive a warning message that you can ignore

19 Download Grades 9. The Text Import Wizard dialog box will open. Select Delimited, and click Next

20 Download Grades 10. Select Tab and click Next

21 Download Grades 11. Select the Username column and then select Text. Click Finish to view the grades in Excel.

22 Update Grades 12. If desired, update the grades in the Excel file. We do not recommend making changes to columns created by a Blackboard Assignment or SafeAssignment if you plan to upload. Changing these grades in Excel may lead to discrepancies.

23 Update Grades 13.When you are finished making changes to the grades and are ready to upload, choose Save As and then choose Other Formats 14. Save as a *.txt file to ensure that you can upload it back to Blackboard

24 Upload Grades Formatting may be lost if you upload grades that were not downloaded from the Grade Center. 1. In the Grade Center, click the Manage button. 2. Select Upload from the menu. 3. Click the Browse button. 4. Locate and select the file you would like to upload. 5. Click Open. 6. Select a delimiter type. 7. Click Submit.

25 Add or Modify Categories 1. In the Grade Center, click the Manage button. 2. Select Categories from the menu. 3. Click Add Category to add a new category 4. Click the Modify button next to a category to change it.

26 Smart Views A Smart View allows you to change the criteria of what is displayed in the Grade Center. You can create a Smart View to view the progress of: A group Students based on performance on a particular item Individual students Query based on user attributes

27 Create Smart Views 1. In the Grade Center, click the Manage button. 2. Select Smart View from the resulting menu. 3. Click Add Smart View. 4. Enter a name in the Name box. (You may also enter a description in the Description box.) 5. Make selections in the Selection Criteria to determine what will be displayed in this view. 6. Click Submit and then click OK.

28 Add a Grade Period 1. In the Grade Center, click the Manage button. 2. Select Grading Periods from the menu. 3. Click Add a Grading Period. 4. Enter a name for the grading period in the Name box (You may also enter a description in the Description box.) 5. Enter dates for the period in the Dates sections. (Check or clear the Associate this Grade Period with all columns that have a Due Date within this range box.) 6. Click Submit and then click OK.

29 Organize the Grade Center The Grade Center s views are completely customizable. Columns can be selectively shown, hidden or frozen to reduce scrolling Columns can be re-ordered as needed for ease in viewing

30 Organize Grade Center Click on Manage --> Organize Grade Center You can: Show/Hide selected columns Modify categories or grading period Re-order the columns by clicking and dragging in grey box to the left

31 Create a Report In the Grade Center, click the Reports button. In the Header Information section, check the boxes next to the items you want to include in the header and information boxes. Select who you want to include in the Users section. In the User Information section, check the boxes of the user information you want to include.

32 Create a Report Select the columns you want to include in the Columns section. In the Column Information section, check the boxes of the column information you want to include. In the Footer Information section, check the boxes next to the items you want to include and enter information in the boxes. Click Submit and then click Close.

33 Grade History In the Grade Center, click the Grade History button. Now you may: Download the grade history: click the Download button. Select options and then click Submit. Click Download and click Yes. Stop tracking grades: click the Disable Grade History button. Clear displayed entries: click the Clear All Grade History Button and then click OK. Click the OK button when finished.

34 Modify Views To change the current view, click the arrow in the Current View section and select another view. To set the current view as default, click the Set as Default button To change how columns are displayed, click the arrow in the Sort Columns By section and select a column sort from the resulting menu.

35 Entering Grades You can enter grades for any items you manually mark, such as: Essays Group projects Assignments Assessments created outside of Blackboard

36 Entering Grades 1. Click in the cell where you would like to add the grade. 2. Enter the grade and press enter. 3. To add comments to the grade, click on the drop down arrows in the same cell as the grade and select Add Comment. 4. Enter the comments in the Feedback to User and Grading Notes boxes. 5. Click Submit.

37 Entering Grades for Blackboard Assignments Columns for assignments are automatically added to the Grade Center The grading screen contains the following information: Section Assignment Information User s Work Feedback to User Instructor Notes Feature Review the instructions/files you provided for the assignment View the student s submission and comments Enter a grade, feedback, and files for the student Enter notes and files for yourself

38 Entering Grades for Blackboard Assignments Select the student s submission and choose Grade Details Click View Attempt

39 Entering Grades for Blackboard Assignments The grade you enter appears in the column Click it to access the grading details again

40 Viewing and Grading Blackboard Tests As with Assignments, columns for tests are automatically added to the Grade Center Within each test: Some test questions are graded automatically Some test questions must be graded manually Auto-graded questions can be modified Student attempts may be cleared to allow them to retake test

41 Viewing and Grading Blackboard Tests If a test requires grading, an exclamation mark appears in the Grade Center column

43 Viewing and Grading Blackboard Tests The Modify Grade page displays information about the student and the test Enter the grade and any feedback you would like to provide to the student

44 Resetting Test Attempts You may allow a student to retake a test.

45 Modify or Override Grades You can modify or override grades that were either manually or automatically recorded in the Grade Center. Enter the new grade

46 Exempting a Grade You may want to reward performance with an exemption on a test or assignment Exempted items will not be included in the total score calculation This grade is exempt.

47 Viewing Grade Details You may want to see: How a particular student is doing How all students are doing on an assignment From the Grade Center table, you can quickly view grade details

48 Viewing Grade Details Use the arrows to move through students (user) and items (column)

49 Customize Letter Grade Schemes Click on Grading Schemas under the Manage button in the menu

50 Customize Letter Grade Schemes Click Modify next to the Letter Schema Enter percentage ranges that convert scores to letter grades Enter percentages that correspond to letter grades

51 Setting Grade Totals Total and Weighted Total are default columns in the Grade Center. Both are used to calculate and present grades. They are calculated as running totals and all scores are included

52 Weighting Grades There are two ways to weight grades: Weight by column Weight by category (each item in a category is worth the same regardless of total points)
