2 Moore s Law for Data The amount of data online went from 5 exabytes in exabytes in 2009 Doubled every 15 months You cannot deal with this data growth with the same applications A reasonable conclusion is that the number of applications will double every 15 months too

Application development needs to revolutionize Better tools are creating faster development The next stage is to improve the lifecycle, governance and deployment of applications Fast development needs to also be good development Use the right patterns and the right models To be scalable, manageable, integrateable, monitorable and extendable 3

4 What is a PaaS and Why does it help? PaaS = Platform-as-a-Service A Cloud Platform Taking the benefits of cloud and applying them to the middleware platform Not just running the middleware asis within VMs Cloud Native 4

8 What to look for in a PaaS Lean Getting locked into a specific public PaaS will have long term repercussions Open Source is a huge protection against this The correct set of core services Not just App Server, but Identity, Registry, Data, Cache, ESB, BPMS, Billing, Logging, etc Open Standard interfaces to common services Efficiency that is valuable in fixed deployments is invaluable in large dynamic deployments! Available on private, public, on-premise All the same benefits are magnified in a cloud Enables modular usage Self-service, multi-tenancy, elasticity, metering, incremental deployment and testing Offers a basis for both single-tenant and multi-tenant models Lots of tenants each with their own stuff, and/or One application that is offered to all or many tenants

21 Building SaaS webapps Stratos 1.0 has support for deploying subtenant webapps Stratos 1.1 has the ability to deploy webapps across tenants In Mars or an internet based deployment these can authenticate against Google identities (Google Apps) Can be deployed by either a tenant or the super-tenants WSO2 2011

22 SaaSing up your code If you are a Software Vendor or Systems Integrator, you may wish to create SaaS applications SaaS also needs: Identity (multi-tenant) Billing + metering Logging Cache Data Queues Etc Not just for webapps: All of Stratos services are network accessible, so you can built MT systems in C, Ruby, PHP, etc

23 Google Apps Integration Two way integration A Google Apps domain can use WSO2 Mars Identity Server as the identity store Uses SAML2 single sign on A Mars domain can choose to use Google Apps as the identity store Uses OpenId and OAuth Allows integration of Stratos into Google Apps marketplace Mars domain is the same as the Google App domain All Google App users are automatically defined as Mars users WSO2 2011

24 Multi-tenant datastore In Stratos 1.1 / Mars 1.0 we are offering two different database models Cassandra / NoSQL SQL/JDBC based on MySQL Running in a multi-tenant model Running in a multi-tenant model Eventually we aim to support JPA as an API over both Currently only for JDBC WSO2 2011

25 Cloud Services Gateway This is a WSO2 offering that enables cloud based assets to connect to internal services ESB or other WSO2 Service provider running in the Enterprise creates a secure tunnel to Mars Provisions/de-provisions services as they come up and down inside Previously this required a dedicated Amazon EC2 instance Now part of Mars 1.0 release as a multi-tenant service WSO2 2011
