1 Current Curricula Interactive Development Program Program Objective The Interactive Development program focuses on preparing students for a successful career as a creative technologist in the marketing communications industry. The program begins and is mostly focused on Web Development, because web is the fastest growing type of development, has the highest job placement rates, and is the easiest to get into. The program also takes shallow steps into other forms of development in order to train not just Web Developers, but Creative Technologists who can adapt to whatever their creative job demands. The program has three essential parts. The biggest and most important part is core knowledge in the fundamentals of programming. Second is some cross-training in creativity and production. Third is a substantial amount of time in team-based and individual classes aimed at practicing your skills and craft, branching out into other forms of development, and filling a portfolio with impressive work. Upon graduation, students must have a mastery of the primary languages of the web, and the processes and skills required to produce successful websites, webapps, advertising, and experiences on the web. Students must be able to prove in an interview situation, with a unique portfolio, showcasing technical skills and an ability to work on creative teams. 2 Web Development Curriculum by Quarter with Course Description First Quarter Web Development 1 This is an introduction to HTML and CSS, the primary tools needed for building web pages. Introduction to Programming Covers basic programming concepts using Javascript to introduce the students to core fundamental programming logic. Production Methodologies 1 This class covers file organization, preparation and basic production processes using tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator & InDesign. Intro to Creative Thinking Techniques address the daily necessity for original thinking, facing the blank page, creative diversity, productivity and overcoming rejection. This class may not seem too relevant to a developer s career, but trust us, it s necessary for anyone who wants to work on exciting projects, as part of a team. Second Quarter Web Development 2 Students explore the fundamentals of responsive web design using various techniques and workflows. Students build on the foundations established in the previous quarter to obtain a mastery of HTML and CSS. Intermediate Programming 1.65 Credits Hours Students learn to apply programming fundamentals to build practical everyday web components including image galleries, slideshows and portfolio sites. Additionally, students work with coding animations and begin learning how to stitch sequences of actions together using Javascript. Web Animation and Advertising This class covers the various techniques for enriching websites with animation, from GIF to the latest Javascript animation libraries. User Experience Introduces students to fundamentals of Information Architecture, usability and User Experience while helping students build a process for presenting their work. Third Quarter Web Development 3 This class continues with HTML/CSS development by introducing various Javascript techniques, plugins and libraries that interactive designers and developers can use to build impressive web apps and user experiences. Advanced Programming Students dive deeper into programming best practices, structures, and techniques. 2

3 Web Animation and Advertising 2 This class goes deeper into creating web experiences, using WebGL, Canvas, and other visualization libraries. Interactive Design 1 This course introduces students to the concepts and best standards behind designing interfaces for interactive user experiences. The course will focus on interface terminology, application of color theory and typography for screen displays, grid systems, fluid layouts, usable navigation systems, and effectively communicate design decisions that solve user goals. Fourth Quarter AJAX Students learn to work with XML and JSON data formats while using AJAX to submit form data and to display content from public data feeds (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc). Students also learn to validate form input and display appropriate errors and feedback. Front-end Frameworks (Currently VueJS) This seminar course will introduce students to the concepts behind using new media and trend spotting in advertising. Web Dev 4 This class wraps up front end traditional web development with the often overlooked but essential secondary skills like SEO, file optimization, accessibility, and others. Interactive Design 2 This course continues training students in the fundamentals of Interactive Design, this time focusing on webapps and native apps for mobile devices. Fifth Quarter Legacy Back End (Currently PHP) Introduction to PHP, MySQL, and working with server-side languages. Back End Frameworks (Currently Express) Students learn to write Javascript for web services with NodeJS, an various packages from npm. They also learn how to create a RESTful API, and revisit how to connect to an API from front-end Javascript with AJAX. Internet of Things (IoT) This class is a survey of the current state of the Internet of things and programming for them. Voice assistants, VR, AR, etc. 3

4 Sixth Quarter Wordpress Students expand on their PHP knowledge with a deep dive into the controversial but inarguably most popular content management system on the web; Wordpress. Front-end Frameworks 2 (Currently React) This class has students practice a second Front End Framework, making them more adaptable to the rapidly changing state of the web. If possible, students will make a hybrid native app. Micro-computer Programming (Currently Arduino) This light-hearted class covers Arduino programming, sensors, soldering, and building real-world things like robots. Seventh Quarter Native App Development (Currently ios/swift) This course is a light look into the broad subject of mobile App Development. Video Game Development (Currently Unity3D) This teams class puts designers and developers together to make a video game. Developers learn C# in the Unity Game Engine. Designers learn how to design games, and prep assets for use in a game engine. Personal Branding Getting ready for the job market and learning to present you professionally. Eighth Quarter Graduate Portfolio Review This course focuses on evaluating and improving the content for each portfolio piece. Students undertake a complete review and finalization of their professional portfolio. 4

5 Practical/Projects Classes We make a lot of room in our curriculum for students to practice their skills. You retain your knowledge of learn five programming languages, in four environments, plus a dozen frameworks and tools without practicing those skills. These classes vary in format As much as possible they re team based, because working with our other students (designers, advertisers, even photographers) makes your project way stronger and more realistic. Sometimes they re individual, so you can really drive a project to be whatever you re excited about. Either way, these classes are where you make the projects that really prepare you for the real world, and maybe even more importantly, that impress potential employers. Electives The list of available electives changes every quarter, but here are some that are often available.
