1 WordPress & Web Development Student Curriculum

2 Intro to HTML Coding (Week 1) Class discussion on why HTML is important. Each Student will complete 13 lessons in basic HTML coding and submit them for a grade. How HTML relates to WordPress & Web Design. Extra Credit will be offered for students interested in completing any of the additional subjects in the code & web developer sector, including: Java Script, jquery, PHP, Ruby Rails. E.C. can be done any time during the semester.

3 Group WordPress Assignment (Week 2-4) We will be dividing the class into small groups and assigning one website design to each group for completion. Each group website design will represent one department at Learn Beyond the Book. It will be up to the students to collectively develop the website in terms of: design, theme, typography, colors selected, logo, function, images chosen & the copy that has been written.

4 Group WordPress Assignment (Week 2-4) Each student will be given an opportunity to: Select which group website they would like to work on with their Classmates for the group assignment. Delegate tasks among the team members collectively. Determine team member strengths & desires for their roles in the project assignment that is to be completed. Review the assignment criteria for the group class project website design using WordPress.com. Class critiques will take place on Week 5.

5 Group WordPress Assignment (Week 5) As a class we will review and critique the group project websites and prepare the students for the portfolio site assignment. We will also do an intro to Photoshop and discuss alternatives to using Photoshop for creating website images: Taking pictures with a digital camera Stock Image Websites Royalty Free Images & Canva

6 WordPress Portfolio/Resume (Week 6) Each student will be shown examples of: What a Portfolio site is used for & why. What a Resume site is used for & why. Why these types of sites are great for credibility. How a site like this can help them achieve respect in the industry of their craft or interests. What elements best suit their desires for the portfolio or resume website design project.

7 WordPress Portfolio/Resume (Week 7-12) Each student will be given an opportunity to: Select which theme they would like to use for their portfolio or resume website. Determine the name of their url or domain. Determine what elements they would like to showcase and include in their website design. Review the assignment criteria that is to be completed for the individual portfolio website design project using WordPress.com.

8 WordPress Portfolio/Resume (Week 7-12) Each student will be given an opportunity to: Select whether they would like to create a portfolio site for their work or a resume site. Students may purchase a domain and hosting. Students will be given a criteria that they will be graded on for their work in the final project. Each student will be responsible for completing their website using either free WordPress.com websites or their own chosen domain names.

9 WordPress Portfolio/Resume (Week 13) As a class we will review and critique the individual websites designed by the students and students will submit links for grades on their final assignment. We will begin explaining Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and how each student can optimize their website to get found on Google, Yahoo & Bing. We will also discuss Google Analytics and how the students may track traffic.

10 WordPress Optimization (Week 14) Each student will be shown how to analyze the marketplace for competition and determine what elements they can incorporate into their website design. We will show the students how to perform competition analysis and determine a strategy to use YouTube Video & On-site Optimization to rank their website on the first page of Google for desired terms they would like to get found on.

11 SEO & Video Optimization (Week 15-16) Learn the basics of: How To Optimize WordPress How To Optimize YouTube Videos What H Tags are How To Optimize Images How To Properly Examine On-site Optimization How To Begin Keyword Research using the Google Keyword Planner Tool

12 Course Materials Each student will need the following: Laptop (Required to bring to each class) Access to a Google Account or Gmail Account Students will submit their assignment links via Google Drive. They will also be working from shared folders with their classmates during the semester for the group assignment. In order to access Google Drive students should have a Gmail account or Google account set up. The Google account will be used in the final weeks of the semester to install Google Analytics on their website. Students may upload videos on YouTube to embed on their portfolio website s. YouTube will require a Google account as well.

16 Course Schedule: Wed. 4:15pm-5:45pm Week 16 Begins: January 28, 2015 Portfolio Site Assignments Ongoing - YouTube Optimization Students are not required to purchase website hosting or a domain name for any assignments given in this class, however it is recommended that they purchase both one website and hosting for the website when they begin building their Portfolio or Resume website. This can be done in March. This will give each student an established domain name that is solely their own. For example: johndoe.com or janedoe.com This is a very professional way to establish themselves for submitting future career applications and job applications using a portfolio or resume site url. It is a wise decision to secure their name as a website before someone else were to register the website exact match or near match for their name.

18 About the Instructor Contact: Anthony has been doing SEO and WordPress for almost 5 years. He is passionate about helping others learn and is excited to be teaching at Learn Beyond the Book. Anthony has managed accounts for multi-million dollar companies based in Santa Clarita and also teaches WordPress at the Newhall Library in SCV.
