API s HP NonStop
API S OF YESTERDAY AND TODAY
What is an API.? An old term popularised by the current phase of internet development. a set of routines, protocols, and tools for building software applications. - wikipedia Today, the term API is used to refer to a Software to Software interface. A way for Applications to communicate.
Software talking to software.? But we ve been doing this for ages..? So is ISO8583 an API.? 0200B A5DFGR021ABCDEFGHIJ
What's different now.? Why is Mr Cameron talking about API s.? Its to do with the tooling Java, Python, REST, JSON, XML Shift towards web technologies (web services.?) The requirement was there.. IoT, iphone, Apps, Big Data, Hackathons
Anatomy of an API Network Infrastructure.. Network protocol.. TCP/IP.. Application protocol.. Request / Response STATEful vs RESTful Implicit LIS5, Explicit (HTTP) Message format ISO, XML, JSON
Anatomy of an API Typical Web 1.0 XML API Early adopters of Internet technologies, telecommunications networks etc.. Heavyweight, SOAP, VPN
Anatomy of an API Current Web 2.0 JSON API Powering apps and large websites Facebook, Twitter, etc Very much the mainstream Hackathon, app mashups etc.. Facebook, twitter etc dropping XML in favour of JSON..
Recap ISO, XML, JSON are all API s..? (No just message frameworks..) ISO - Lightweight, Not Human readable, not web friendly XML -Heavyweight, fairly Human readable, fairly web friendly JSON - Lightweight, Human readable, web friendly (can be RESTful)
What developers want.? Use APIs for innovation and experimentation. Reuse = time to delivery Sharing = expediency Encapsulation = having little to learn. How easy are your APIs to consume. Consider API s products. But be wary of charging. Build it and developers will show us the way.
Why is this important.? Old world: Few high transacting customer Big Bank s, fixed infrastructure, leased lines etc etc.. Not web firendly..!! New world: Greater number of lower volume customers Low infrastructure investment, opportunistic, speed to market. Web friendly..!!!
STATE vs REST API s What we in FI s do is typically STATEful in nature. Financial transactions, VISA, MC, LINK all use session based communications. Logon, Key Exchange, transactions. Logoff. Financial transactions can be ISO, XML or JSON based.
STATEful API s Deploy once per customer High level of up front investment Long time to onboard customer (6 months) High customer integration costs Up front costs require long customer commitment, strong business case Cost per transactions typically constant despite new customers
RESTful API s Deploy once, reuse for many customers Lower level of up front investment Short time to onboard customer (minutes) Low customer integration costs Low up front costs enable new business models. Pay per click, prepay, trial periods Cost per transaction goes down as new customers come onboard
The REST architectural style Described by Roy Fielding: Uniform Interface Stateless Cacheable Client-Server Layered System Code on Demand (optional) rtation/rest_arch_style.htm
Information vs Transactions HTTP GET vs HTTP PUT Broadly, information vs action API s Get possible from web browser
API s in Action
Facebook Graph API
Facebook Graph API
Facebook Graph API Parameters used to filter response?fields=id,name, likes

API s in finance
API s in finance
API s on HP NonStop XML / SOAP etc.. ACI, Comforte (CSL), Nuwave (SOAPAM), Java JSON REST Comforte (CSL), Nuwave (Lightwave), Java (Dropwizard) ISO Little support beyond legacy products
API s on HP NonStop
