3 My History Navy Engineering Laboratory Technician (ELT) in the submarine force 10 Years Obtained EWS and Leading ELT qualifications Came to GEL in June 1992 (20 Years) Worked as a Radiochemist until 1997 and continuously involved in automating the lab : New LIMS implementation Present: Continued improvement and lots of special projects

4 GEL Technology (LIMS) Oracle Database since Oracle and IDXL (Terminal/Menu Driven) Conception and development of LIMS Current Oracle 9i using PLSQL to present webpages for end user interaction LIMS under continuous renovation Last several years has seen a wealth of new tools available for use in the toolbox

5 Problems with Software Development Finding the best fit The need to find a balance in development and the production that occurs in the laboratory Software development of new items are great until things get busy

7 Tools for the Toolbox The goal of any of the developed and / or discovered tools would be to make them available for reuse in multiple places The following slides are tools currently used at GEL Public Domain Software Open Source
