1 About the Tutorial Title: Intro to Macromedia Dreamweaver MX Description: This is a tutorial providing an overview of the Dreamweaver MXInterface Category: Html Author: Gregory Wehrman wehrman@purdue.edu Lesson: This tutorial will provide an overview of Dreamweaver MX and functionality. You can use Dreamweaver MX to create and edit web pages visually along with manipulating the actual code. Dreamweaver MX overview Dreamweaver MX is a commonly used too for the creation of websites by deveolopers and casual users. This is a general picture of what the Dreamweaver MX interface looks like. It will provide the tools you will need to create webpages using Dreamweaver MX.

2 Title and Insert Bar The title and insert bar of Dreamweaver MX contains a lot of the functions that can be used for developing WebPages. The bars are generally located at the very top of the Dreamweaver MX screen. The title bar is the place where you can execute most of your top level commands. Some of these commands are file manipulation such as open, save, and closing documents. You can also edit, change the view, insert, open windows and much more. The insert bar contains functions for placing items in your web page. Here you can add tables, forms, frames, and much more to your webpage. The Help section can also be access by clicking on the help tab.

3 Starting a New Document Creating a new document in Dreamweaver MX is very easy. To create a new document you click the file tab on the title bar. Then you click on new and that brings up the New Document window. Here you can choose what you want to create. If you want to create a new page for the Internet then you would want to click on the basic page tab under category. Then HTML under the basic page tab. Then you click create and Dreamweaver will create the new page. You can also create any page Dreamweaver MX can provide here by clicking on the various options under the category tab such as CSS Style Sheets.

4 Page Properties After creating a new page for your site, you may wish to change the properties of the page. To do this, Macromedia MX has a nice built in feature that places many of the properties you may wish to alter about the page in one window. To get to the page properties window you click modify on the title bar. Then you click page properties on the modify drop down menu. Here properties such as the title, background, link colors and more can be altered or set for the entire page. Document Window The document window displays the code for the current WebPage you are working on. It is located generally below the title and main bars at the top of the screen. Here you can manipulate the code for the page if you have knowledge of Html.

5 Also, if you do not know Html and have an interest in learning it, you can watch what happens in the code window as you are working on the page and gain a small understanding of what it does. Layout Window The layout window is the graphical representation of what the website that are working on looks like. The window is generally located directly below the document window. Here you can move items on the site around and adjust the formatting without having to touch the actual code.

6 Properties Window The properties window is the location where you can adjust the properties and formatting of any object you select. The window is generally located below the layout window. You can size, color, align, and change almost anything you create by using the buttons and menus located here. You can also use it to create URL links. Design Window The design window is where you can create and apply cascading style sheets to WebPages you are currently working on. The window is generally located in the top right corner next to the title and insert bars. Cascading style sheets can be used to apply similar styles across many different web pages to keep a common theme or style among them.

7 Files Window The files window is used to produce a multiple page website or to view the pages you are currently working on. This window is generally located below the design window and to the right of the layout window. This is also where you can view all the files of a complete site. A site is a collection of single Web Pages that are linked and refer to one another. This tutorial is considered a site because all the pages refer to each other information about Dreamweaver MX. They are also linked by the arrows on the bottom and the menu window if you open in. The window provides easy access to pages for creation and modification by providing a file tree. The file tree provides all the functionality of any windows file tree so that you can create, modify, delete, and view any files on the system.

8 Answer Window The answers window provides a link to Macromedia's website for access to tutorials, updates, and the help section. The window is generally located in the bottom right corner below the files window.

9 Conclusion After completing this tutorial, you now have an idea of all the windows in Dreamweaver MX and what their functions are. Now you have the knowledge to explore Dreamweaver MX and work with the functionality it provides.
