This article shows how to fix that. How to get Intellisense with AVR in your Web app s global.asax Owing to a frustrating glitch in AVR s Intellisense, Web applications global.asax file doesn t offer Intellisense support. The issue stems from the back that global.asax parks its code inside a pair of script tags and that trips up AVR s Intellisense (by default, technically, AVR s language service sees global.asax s code as script code not AVR program code therein lies the problem). This is a logged issue for AVR (#7099) but until that issue gets resolved, this article provides a good work-around to provide Intellisense for global.asax. To get Intellisense in global.asax, we re going to move its AVR code to a separate class. This is a simple cut and paste operation that takes longer to explain that it does to do. Stick with me, this is an easy thing to do and very worthwhile if you have very much code in global.asax. By default, AVR in global.asax is parked inside a pair of <script> tags as shown in Figure 1. The abridged code below in yellow shows this AVR between the two <script> tags. Your code may have more or less routines than shown. It s a ridiculous dialog because placing the code in App_Code folder isn t optional. Figure 2c.

3 From the Add New Item dialog displayed next, add a new class and name it global.asax.vr as shown in Figure 2b. Figure 2b. Adding a new class. When you click the Add button on the Add New Item dialog, the dialog shown in Figure 2c is shown. It s a ridiculous dialog because placing the code in App_Code folder isn t optional. Figure 2c. 4 Step 2. Put code in global.asax.vr class. From the solution explorer, double-click the global.asax.vr class you just added to App_Code folder and replace its code with the code in Figure 3a. Stub code for global.asax.vr class Next, select all of the code between the <script> tags in your global.asax file and paste it between the BegClass/Endclass operation codes in global.asax.vr. The global.asax.vr class should look like Figure 3b after this paste operation (where the yellow code comes from your global.asax file. If you added other Using statements to your global.asax file, add them to this new global.asax.vr class. Step 3. Replace contents of the global.asaxfile The final step is to remove all of the code in your global.asax file and replace with the single line below. The blue arrow is showing the line break for publication purposes. When you re done your global.asax file should have just the one line as shown in Figure 4. If you deploy your Web sites to be updatable, this change will also, in a very minor way, improve your application startup performance.
