DO NOT CONNECT TO DATA SYSTEM 3 2 DO NOT CONNECT TO DATA SYSTEM 1 A B Accessing, Setting And Operating The System METHODS OF OPERATION: The Qt 300 system is operated from the front panel push buttons and LCD OR by Software Control from either a computer that is connected directly to the control module OR from a connection to a local area network. Control from a computer is identical to that from a network. If settings are made from a computer, it may be removed and the panel may be locked. If the panel is locked, adjustments cannot be made from the front panel without unlocking the panel. If the Qt 300 is connected to a network, the system settings may be made from any computer on the network. Using Front Panel Control 1. Loosen screws and lift the control module slightly and hinge it forward to give access to its connection panel. 2. Move the panel lock switch to the UNLOCKED position. Close the module 3. Press NEXT or PREVIOUS to scroll between screens to adjust sound masking, paging or music volumes by zone. 4. Modify a value by 1 db on any screen by pressing + or Press NEXT to accept a screen value. NOTES: The system returns to the Version, Status screen after five minutes of inactivity. Z1 indicates Zone 1, Z2 indicates Zone 2, etc. If an error is detected, an error code is displayed on the control module. Press + to acknowledge the error. See page 9. Software Control Software control uses either a direct PC connection or a LAN connection to the control module. RUN 2 1 ZONE AUDIO INPUT INPUT THIS DEVICE COMPLIES WITH PART 15 OF THE FCC RULES. OPERATION IS SUBJECT TO THE FOLLOWING: 1. THIS DEVICE MAY NOT CAUSE HARMFUL INTERFERENCE. 2. THIS DEVICE MUST ACCEPT ANY INTERFERENCE RECEIVED INCLUDING INTERFERENCE ETHERNET THAT MAY CAUSE UNDESIRED OPERATION. U. S. PATENT NO. 6,188,771; 6,88,945; 7,194,094 AND ADDITIONAL PATENTS PENDING. POWER 24 VDC, 1.5 A OR LAN 2
Software control offers the following features: 1. Auto ramping of masking volumes - see page Time-of-day masking volume control - see page Time-sensitive operations. The Real Time Clock (RTC) allows these operations without a network connection and provides the correct time after a power failure. The RTC should be set prior to setting system operating levels. Set the clock using the pull-down menus under Administration: Date and Time. You must set all parameters: day-of-theweek, date, and time. 4. notification of system error - see page Access to system equalizers. The Masking and Audio equalizers are configured by the factory and should not need to be modified in most installations. The equalizers may be used to adjust the system to a different masking, paging or music spectrum. To access the equalizers, log into the unit using the standard username and a special password. Contact Steelcase Line 1 at 888.STEELCASE ( ) for this password. See the HELP function for instructions to change equalizer values. NOTE: Settings will be saved to memory after 10 minutes of setting all software features. Operating the system with Software Control: 1. System software is operated from any network browser. Software is pre-installed in the control module. The HELP function provides comprehensive software control operating instructions. 2. Connect a computer or the network (LAN, 10 Base T, IEEE 802.3) to the Ethernet jack. 3. Power the control module on by plugging it into a standard 110V outlet. 4. Press the right arrow on the module to advance to the IP address screen. An assigned IP address is displayed on the front panel within two minutes of powering the module. a. If the default IP address appears after two minutes when making a network connection, it indicates the module is not seeing the network. Check to see that the network connection is live. If it is, power-cycle (unplug and re-plug) the control module. If a connection is still not made, check with the network administrator to determine if network access is being denied. b. A direct computer connection should display the default IP address in less than two minutes. The default IP address is c. If the IP address does not appear at all, contact the network administrator. 3
5. Access the Qt PRO System Monitoring and Control application. a. Read the control module Hostname or IP address from the front control panel. b. Enter either the hostname or IP address into the browser address bar. c. The Qt PRO will issue a request for username and a password. d. The default username is admin. The default password is secret. 6. After logging in with the defaults, you may change the hostname, username and password. DHCP Support: The system uses DHCP to obtain either a dynamic or static IP address. The system displays its MAC address on the front panel. This allows the network administrator to use the MAC address to configure a static IP address. NETBIOS Support: The system supports NETBIOS and advertises its hostname as QTXX, where XX is the last two digits of the MAC address. The hostname may be changed after a connection is made by a browser. It may be helpful to use hostnames that convey information about the area served, for example: qtpro_b1f3 (building one floor three). If multiple control modules are installed on a single network, be sure that no two control modules use the same hostname. Other Recommended Connections: Access to an SMTP server enables the sending of error notification s. Access to an SNTP server obtains the SNT time stamp. The module sends its SNTP request to pool.ntp.org. If the SNTP server is enabled, the real-time clock feature is disabled. Suggestions for Managing Multiple Control Modules: Browser bookmarks are a convenient tool for managing multiple control modules. A bookmark add-on stores bookmarks on a web server and allows access from any computer on the LAN. Create a Sound Masking folder (under Bookmarks) to hold a bookmark for each control module. Use location-based names for each module s bookmark. To access a specific module, open Bookmarks > Sound-Masking, and the specific module bookmark. 4
Adjusting Sound Masking Volume Levels System volumes may be adjusted using either the front panel controls or with the software interface. Set sound levels based on the table below: Zone Type Ceiling Height Vol. Level Intended Result Open Area dba Open Area dba Open Area dba Private Office ALL dba Setting within these ranges should optimize speech privacy without excessive distractions. Generally, set masking volumes toward the high end of the range and adjust according to site conditions and user preferences. If possible, measure the results with a sound level meter and check for the achieved sound pressure level. Adjust as necessary or judge by listening in the area. If installation occurs before the office is occupied, turn the system to the desired level and leave it at that level. If the system is installed after the office is occupied, turn the system to the correct level when the space is unoccupied and employ auto ramping, described on page 6, to provide of acclimation. If using software to adjust volume settings be sure to set night settings to day settings if not using the time of day feature. Time of Day Masking The Qt 300 system allows the specification of a day time and a night time masking volume for each zone. Use the pull down menus on the Operations page for each zone to specify a daytime and a nighttime start time and a ramping interval, the period of time allotted to accomplish the full transition (in one-half hour increments) for each zone. For specific Saturday and Sunday operation, choose either day/night or night operation (in night operation mode, the night volume is in effect for the entire Saturday and/or Sunday). IMPORTANT: For full system effectiveness, it is essential to set the volumes correctly for each zone. If the volume is set too low, speech privacy is reduced and workplace distractions are more apparent. If too high, the masking sound can become a distraction. Since, in general, acoustic privacy improves as sound masking volume increases, the general strategy is to set the masking volumes as high as possible without being distracting. 5
Adjusting Paging/Music Volumes The system has two inputs for paging or music. Either input may be connected to any or all zones via software or front panel interface. If no paging and/or music from these inputs are desired in a particular zone, set the audio volume level of that zone to mute. Note: Input B is the preferred music input. Auto Ramping The auto ramping feature is an ideal way to introduce the benefits of sound masking to an occupied space. Auto ramping is set to gradually increase the masking volume for a zone. It is set a specified number of dba below the desired volume level for an appropriate masking environment. Auto ramping may be set for an initial reduction in the masking output level by 1 to 8 db, in 1 db steps. After setting, masking levels are increased every workday morning morning at 2:00 AM by 1 db until the desired masking level is reached. Before initiating ramping, be sure the desired sound levels have been set and recorded on the Settings record worksheet in this guide or printed from the print settings tab of the software interface. To initiate auto ramping, on the Operations page, click any auto ramping radio button indicating between 1 and 8. Note: Auto ramping may also be used to temporarily lower the volume in a zone. If the administrator does not restore the original masking level after the temporary period, the system restores the originally set masking volume automatically. 6
Battery Replacement A coin-style battery (Cr1220 or Br1220) powers the real time clock during a power loss. To replace the battery: 1. Hinge the control module forward to access the connection panel. 2. Remove the zone run connections. They should already be labeled. If not, label before removing (for example: Zone 1 Run 2). 3. Remove the six screws that hold the panel. 4. Taking care to not disturb the other connections, lift the panel to expose the coin battery in its housing at the front left of the module. 5. Use a ball-point pen to dislodge the existing battery. 6. Insert a new battery with the positive (+) side facing upward. 7. Replace the connection panel, securing all six screws. Reconnect the zone run cables. Figure 2 7
Error Handling VIEWING ERRORS USING SOFTWARE CONTROL: To benefit fully from error detection and notification, it is necessary to enable the system to send error messages over the network. This may require coordination with the company IT department. In the Notification of Errors block on the Administration screen: 1. Enter the Address to which system error notifications should be sent. 2. Enter the Server Name of your SMTP outbound server (e.g. smtp.mymailservice.com). 3. Enter the outbound Port Number. 4. Enter a Username and a Password if the SMTP outboard server requires authentication. The Username and Password represent the control module identification on the specified server. Error notifications arrive: From: Username. 5. settings must be verified by generating a test sent to the Address. To do so, Click Test. If an is not received, check the settings. If notification of emitter errors is desired, contact Steelcase Line 1 at 888.STEELCASE ( ) for instructions to enable the fault detection feature. If an error should occur, the Status indication on the Operations Screen will change from Status OK to Status: Error. To learn the cause of the error, click on Error. With the click, a window will pop up explaining what the source of the error is. Field diagnosable system errors are of three types: 1. Elevated ambient temperature. 2. Wiring short. 3. Emitters not operating on one or more runs. Once the cause of the error has been determined, use the diagnostic procedures of Table 1 to find and repair the source of the error. Once the defect has been addressed, the error must be acknowledged and the error cleared: click Acknowledge on the Operations Screen. If the error remains after the source of the error is found and repaired, power-cycle the control module and repeat these steps. If the error still remains, contact your dealer. 8
VIEWING ERRORS USING THE FRONT PANEL CONTROL: System errors are shown on the Control Module front panel display. If an error occurs, the message Status: error will be displayed. To determine the cause of the error, press NEXT. This displays the Error screen with system error codes. Error Codes If one or more errors exist in the sound masking system, an eight digit error code is displayed on the LCD display (scroll forward to the Error screen). The error state is indicated by an eight digit code of the form: Error: Error Code for Zone 1 Error Code for Zone 2 Error Code for Zone 3 Error Code for Control Module This digit has no meaning Where a number other than 0 indicates an error. Examples Error: Short sensed in the wiring in zone 3. Error: Short sensed in the wiring in zones 1 and 2. Error: One or more emitters are not operating in zone 1. Error: Contact the manufacturer. 9
Table 1: Error and recommended diagnostic procedures. Code Error Description Recommended Diagnostic 0 No Error 1 Wiring short Check recently installed cabling for shorts using a LAN tester. The Control Module shuts down masking in a zone indicating a short. If the short is subsequently corrected, the Control Module restores masking automatically. 2 The Control Module is experiencing elevated ambient temperature. Note: This code will only occur for the Control Module. Check that the Control Module is located in an area that is below the specified maximum operating temperature. If the area is above 90 o F, the maximum operating temperature, contact your dealer. 4 One or more emitters on one or more home runs are not operating. 1. Walk the zone to see if system wiring has been disconnected by a maintenance crew. 2. Check to see if an emitter has stopped operating (rare). 3. Contact the manufacturer. Note: This fault may be triggered by a power outage. All Other Codes Various Contact your dealer or the manufacturer.
