16 My Recent Experience Son s MacBook Leopard died: Would not boot! Apple Store reported dead hard disc New disc didn t work Had to replace mother board Time Machine on LaCie 1TB was only BU Disk Would Not Mount!

17 a. Disk Utility Saw LaCie 1TB Verify Disk suggested Repair Reluctant to Repair only BU What does Repair do?

18 b. DiskWarrior Rebuilt Temp Directory and mounted disc on desktop Inspection showed good data Attempt to make a BU failed... How to copy Backups.backupdb?

19 c. Next Steps Re-Boot Run DiskWarrior again Replace directory on LaCie 1TB

20 d. Next Steps Apple Store replaced Hard Disc & Mother Board Made SuperDuper! BU of MacBook, fresh from Apple Store Try to make BU of LaCie 1TB Disk Utility Restore...didn t work!

21 e. Time Machine Restore Restore didn t finish Machine didn t boot Re-Install Leopard Try Again No Joy

22 3.1 Recovery I wrote a recovery perl program for Backups.backdb directory that works great in test mode Drills down directory structure Makes a directory for each file extension (.jpg,.mpg,.pdf,.doc,.etc) on keep list Writes all found files in those directories Lots of pot-holes: file permissions, special characters in file names, broken directory links...

23 Recovery Status MacBook running great Some data retrieved form misc BU s Apps (ipad & ipod Touch) downloaded 2nd time from Apple s App Store Some tunes recovered from ipod Touch Some data loss Still working on LaCie 1TB but it seems that there isn t much there.

24 What I learned Apple keeps your broken disc... Forever! Try to follow the Do No Harm plan: wreck your only BU - Don t Best to proceed slowly and think things out Time Machine formats are different: USB attached vs. Wireless Time Capsule Senuti works great to recover files from ipod I still have a lot to learn on this subject My son suggested that I get a job as a Genius

27 Dangerous Duplicates Backup by cloning startup disk Good, BUT mods to the duplicate will be clobbered by the next backup How can this happen? Easily Spotlight searches find clone files, etc. How to prevent? Unmount the clone disk
