1 Fibre Channel Specialist Lab Enterprise Fabric Suite Zoning Operation Objective: This lab will demonstrate the configuration and management of zoning in a QLogic fabric. Unless noted, all operations performed in Enterprise Fabric Suite, can be utilized with QuickTools. This lab assumes you are using Enterprise Fabric Suite. Lab Time Allocated: 75 minutes. 3 FAQ Q. In the Name Server and in Zoning I see only 5 targets per switch, however in Disk Management, SANsurfer and Iometer, I see many more disks, why is that? A. Always remember that a Fibre Channel switch is a transparent interconnect device. It sees only the DEVICES connected to it and not the LUNs behind a device. In our lab there is one RAID controller with 4 LUNs behind it. Therefore; a switch will see 4 disks in the JBOD and only 1 RAID controller. Note: Any references to Stack do not apply to QuickTools. 1.0 Zoning Configuration 1. Start up Enterprise Fabric Suite and verify working conditions for your fabric. a. Check Windows Disk Management to verify the presence of disk targets. i. Double-click on Computer Management from the Remote Desktop ii. Select Disk Management from the tree on the left iii. You should see between raw disks like the ones shown at right. b. Open Iometer and verify that you have a matching number of Physical Drives in the Disk Targets tab. Do not send any traffic at this time. c. From the Stack Display, make sure that you can see at least 3 Targets on each switch in the Devices tab. 2. Verify that some, but not all, of the devices have Nicknames assigned. These nicknames will be used to easily identify devices when configuring zoning. July Copyright 2009 QLogic Corporation

4 3. Check for an Active Zoneset. a. In the EFS Fabric Tree, click on the Fabric (cloud) icon. b. At the bottom, select the Active Zoneset tab. 4. You not should see an Active ZoneSet at this time 5. Restore Default Zoning: We want to start with a fresh ZoneSet, so we will clear out any pre-configured zoning information. a. Click Switch_A in the tree. From the menu, select Zoning Restore Default Zoning. b. Click OK on each confirmation dialog box. c. Repeat on Switch_B. 6. Check for Configured Zonesets on the lab switches. a. Click on the Stack b. At the bottom, select the Configured Zonesets tab. c. Only the ORPHAN ZONE SET should be shown. 1.1 Open a Zoning Session For the first part of the lab exercise, we will create single-initiator zoning using both WWPN and Domain, Port members. Tech Tips Where to configure zoning 1 : If you have a stack of 5xxx switches, you will want to configure zoning from the stack icon. If you have multiple types of QLogic switches, pick a single switch to be the primary switch. Most likely this will be the entry switch of the fabric. Use a View File whenever possible to continually use the same entry switch. If you are using a QLogic switch with another vendor s switch, configure zoning from the other switch. 6. For this part of the lab exercise, select the Stack icon in the Fabric Tree. 7. Select the Zoning icon in the Tool Bar or select Edit Zoning from the Zoning menu. The zoning edit window appears! 8. 5 Tech Tips Creating Zoning names 2 : Zoning information is case-sensitive. You cannot use white space in your names for zoning, but some of the special characters are allowed. An underscore (_) is allowed. You must start names with an alpha character. (a-z or A-Z) 1.2 Create a Zone Set 9. Click the Zone Set icon in the Tool Bar, OR right-click the text Zone sets in the Graphic Window and select New Zone Set. 10. Enter the Zone Set Name of Port. Click OK or press <enter>. 1.3 Create (Add) Zones 11. Highlight the Port Zone Set by clicking on the name and click the Zone icon in the Tool Bar, (Create Zone), OR Right-click on the Zone Set name and select Create Zone from the popup box. (Add a zone) 12. Enter the Zone Name of porta and click OK (or press <enter>). 13. Click on the entry handle by the Zone Set Port to expand and view the zone. 14. Add another zone to the Port Zone Set. Name = portb July Copyright 2009 QLogic Corporation

6 15. Add another Zone Set named: WWN with 2 zones named: wwna and wwnb so that you have what is shown at right. 16. Click Apply to save the zoning information. It s a good idea to save at regular intervals. 17. Click the Perform Error Check button. It is always a good habit to perform error checking when you Apply. This will NOT save the information in the zoning database, but check your zoning information against the FC-SW2 standard for zones. 18. How many errors were found? There should have been 4. One error for each empty zone. For now, this is acceptable. 19. Click Save Zoning and answer No to the activation question: 20. After the save is complete, click Close. The Zoning Database should remain open. Tech Tip 3 : If creating a large zoning database, save your information at regular intervals. July Copyright 2009 QLogic Corporation

7 1.4 Adding Members to a Zone The members you can add to zones will be listed in the Members Tree on the right. They are shown by the Domain,Port they are connected to, their Fibre Channel Address and by their WWPN. If you have set nicknames, those names will appear instead in place of the WWPN. (Graphic may not match lab equipment) There are two ways to add a member to a zone Method 1: Click the member icon (Port/WWN/FCA) and drag the icon into the zone. Method 2: 1) Click the Zone (to select) on the left. 2) Then click the member icon (to select) on the right. 3) Click the Insert Tool on the toolbar To select multiple items, you can use the <Shift> and <Ctrl> keys. 21. Populate the zones you have created with the following: Zone Set Zone Name Members Port porta Ports 0 & 5 of Switch_A (Make sure that you do not include the WWPN or FCA in the zone) portb Ports 0 & 5 of Switch_B WWN wwna WWN from Switch_A of the FC Adapter and all JBOD disks connected to Switch_A wwnb WWN of the FC Adapter on Switch_B only July Copyright 2009 QLogic Corporation

8 1.5 Creating an Alias 22. Click on the Alias button in the Toolbar or right click on Zone Sets at the top of the left window pane and select New Alias. 23. Name your alias, b_jbod. Click OK 24. Click (select) the new Alias and select the WWN of all disks connected to Switch_B 25. Use the insert button or drag and drop the members into the alias. 26. Drag the Alias into the wwnb zone in WWN Zone Set. Tech Tip 4 : Using an Alias will assist in keeping all of the devices that will be together in the SAN, together in zoning. You may find other uses for using an Alias as we move through the lab. After you are done, you should have the following. (Note, WWNs, Nicknames, and Domain IDs may differ in your setup.) 27. Click Apply and Perform Error Check. If you have any errors, correct them at this time. 28. Save the Zoning Database, but DO NOT activate a Zone Set. July Copyright 2009 QLogic Corporation

9 1.6 Zoning Configuration Shortcuts Copy Zones 29. Create another Zone Set and name it, New. 30. Click on the porta zone and drag it to the New Zone Set. 31. Did it make a copy, or move it? You should have found that a copy was made. Orphan Zone Set 32. In New, create a zone bob and put 2 unused ports in it. 33. Right-click bob and select Remove Zone From Set. Click Yes on the confirmation. 34. Did the bob zone get deleted? 35. Expand the Orphan Zone Set 36. Is the bob zone there? Tech Tip 5 : The ORPHAN ZONE SET will save zones that are not currently assigned to a Zoneset. 37. Drag bob into the Port Zone set. 38. Is the bob zone still in the Orphan Zone Set? This continues to prove the Tech Tip above. 39. Copy bob to the New Zone set. 40. Right-click bob and select Delete Zone. The message explains that it will remove this zone from all zone sets. Click Yes on the confirmation. 41. Did the bob zone get deleted? 42. Before continuing, Remove the New zone set. 1.7 Saving Zoning 43. Click Apply and then Perform Error Check. 44. If you have any errors, correct them at this time. 45. Click Save Zoning and No on activation questions. We will be activating the Zone set in a moment. 46. Click Close on the save dialog. 47. 10 1.8 Verify changes in the Zoning Database 48. Since you configured the Zoning Database on the stack, both switches should have the same zoning configuration. To verify this, in the tree on the left, select the Stack, then select the Configured Zonesets tab. 49. Note the zoning database information. Click the Switch_A icon in the tree and select Configured Zonesets. 50. Does the information appear to be the same? 51. Now click on Switch_B in the tree. 52. Is the zoning information the same? Tech Tip 6 : When configuring the Zoning Database from the Stack, it is automatically saved to all the switches in the stack. 2.0 Zoning Activation 2.1 Activate a Zone Set 1. While you could have activated a Zone Set when you were saving your zoning information, there are two other ways to activate a Zone Set. Both options are completed from the switch (or stack) where the zoning information is stored. Click on the Stack in the tree. a. Option 1: Menu i. From the menu, select Zoning Activate Zoning ii. Select Zone Set Port from the pull-down box iii. Click Activate (or press <enter>). iv. Click OK on the Activation Message. b. Option 2: Data Window i. From the bottom Configured Zonesets tab, right-click on the WWN Zone Set. ii. Select Activate Zone Set iii. Click Activate iv. Click OK on the Activation Message. 11 2.2 Check for Active Zone Set 2. When Zone Sets are activated, they are active Fabric-wide. Click on the Fabric cloud to get the Fabric Display. 3. Click the Active Zone Set tab at the bottom of the screen and check in the Data Window to see the correct Zone Set is active. This is the only place to see where you can determine an active Zone Set, within Enterprise Fabric Suite. 4. Which Zone set is active; WWN or Port? The last Zoneset activated will be shown here. Tech Tip 7 : In QuickTools, the Active Zoneset is an additional tab on the Faceplate Display, since there is no Topology (Fabric) View. 2.3 Testing the Single-Initiator Zoning. 5. Verify that the WWN Zone set is activated. a. Click the Active Zone Set tab at the bottom of the screen and check in the Data Window to see the correct Zone Set is active. This is the only place to see where you can determine an active Zone Set. 6. To Rescan for disks, follow these procedures a. From the Remote Desktop, click the Computer Management icon. b. From the tree, select Disk Management c. From the menu, select Action Rescan Disks 7. How many raw disks are shown? With the zoning activated, there should be 8 disks shown. 8. Minimize Computer Management. 9. To Deactivate the Zone Set, follow these steps a. From EFS, select the Stack in the tree. b. From the menu, select Zoning Deactivate Zoning. c. Click Yes on the challenge dialog box. d. Click OK. 10. Using the procedures above, rescan for disks on Windows. 11. Are there more raw disks now? All paths to the disks are now available to the OS. 12. Activate the Port Zone set and rescan for disks 13. How many raw disks are shown? With the zoning activated, there should be 8 disks shown. (Disk Management may number them differently, so do an actual count of the number of disks.) July Copyright 2009 QLogic Corporation

12 3.0 Zoning Operations Up to this point, you have demonstrated the most typical type of zoning, which is single initiator zoning. You used both WWN and Domain, Port members to accomplish this. The rest of the lab exercise is designed to demonstrate Zoning operations using a variety of zoning parameters that are available. 3.1 Restore Default Zoning 1. Within Enterprise Fabric Suite, select Stack in the tree. 2. Open the Zoning menu. 3. Is there an option Restore Default Zoning? Tech Tip 8 : Restore Default Zoning is only available on individual switches. This command is designed to deactivate the Active Zone Set and clear a zoning database on a single switch. 4. Select Switch_A in the tree. 5. From the menu, select Zoning Restore Default Zoning 6. If you click OK, what will happen to the Active Zoneset? 7. Click OK. 8. Is there an Active Zoneset in the fabric? Although the Zoneset was deactivated, you only deleted the zoning information from Switch_A. Switch_B still has the configured Zonesets. 9. In the tree, click on Switch_B. 10. Click the Configured Zonesets tab. 11. Is the Zoning information still on Switch_B? REMEMBER: At this point, you have No Active Zone Set and no zoning information configured on Switch A. July Copyright 2009 QLogic Corporation

13 3.2 Zoning Config -- Auto Save 12. Activate Zoneset WWN from Switch_B. 13. Verify that WWN has been activated by checking the Active Zoneset tab. 14. Go to the Faceplate Display of Switch_A 15. Click on the Configured Zonesets tab at the bottom and answer the following questions: a. Is Zoneset WWN shown? b. In Zone wwnb, is there an Alias? c. Is Zoneset Port shown? d. From the menu, select Zoning Edit Zoning Config Is Merge Auto Save checked? Tech Tip 9 : When a Zoneset is activated, ONLY the active Zoneset gets propagated to the entire fabric. The Alias name is NOT propagated with the rest of the Zoneset. Each switch that has Merge Auto Save setting enabled will save the Active Zoneset to their memory. To retain the Alias Name, the switch configuration must be archived. 16. Cancel out of the Zoning Configuration window. You now have ZoneSet: WWN on both switches and it is the Active ZoneSet. 3.3 Zoning Config Discard Inactive 17. From the Topology Display Active Zoneset tab, verify WWN is the Active Zoneset. 18. Select Switch_A in the Fabric Tree. 19. From the menu, select Zoning Edit Zoning Config 20. Check the Discard Inactive Box. 21. Click OK. This setting configures Switch_A to remove any inactive Zoning configuration. 22. Select Switch_B in the Fabric Tree. 23. Activate the Port Zoneset. 24. Verify the Port Zoneset has been activated from the Active Zoneset tab in the Topology Display. 25. Select Switch_A in the Fabric tree. July Copyright 2009 QLogic Corporation

14 26. Select the Configured Zonesets tab. 27. Does Switch_A have both Zonesets? Only the Port Zoneset should be configured on Switch_A. Switch_A did not keep the WWN Zoneset when the Port Zoneset was activated. The next steps will verify the Discard Inactive operation and restore the zoning to Switch_A. Note: This is only used in multi-vendor fabrics with more than 2000 zones configured. 28. On Switch_A, disable the Discard Inactive setting from the Edit Zoning Config dialog box. 29. From Switch_B, Activate the WWN Zoneset. 30. Verify that both Zonesets are shown on Switch_A. The next section will repair the Stack zoning configuration. 3.4 Repairing the Stack Zoning Configuration 31. Select the Stack in the EFS tree. 32. Verify the Configured Zonesets tab is selected at the bottom of the screen. 33. Does this view show the Zonesets that are configured? As of now, the zoning information is the same on both switches, but the zoning configuration is not the same. Because the Alias name that was configured on Switch_B was not propagated, so Switch_A does not have that Alias saved. Although it is a slight variation, there is a difference that should be repaired in the stack. You can use the following method to restore a single switch zoning configuration to the entire stack. You will now restore the Switch_B zoning configuration to the Stack. 34. With the Stack selected, open the zoning database. July Copyright 2009 QLogic Corporation

15 35. You will be asked to select a Source Switch. Switch_B should have the zoning information that you created earlier in the lab. Click OK. 36. Click Apply, Save Zoning, and No to save the zoning information without changing the Active Zoneset. 37. Close the Zoning dialog boxes. 38. Looking at the Configured Zoneset' tabs, does the Stack, Switch_A, and Switch_B all show the same zoning? 3.5 Zoning Config -- Default Zone To demonstrate the concept of Default Zone, we will first Deactivate the Zoneset currently running on the fabric. 39. From the Stack menu, select Zoning Deactivate Zoning 40. Click Yes on the challenge message and OK on the confirmation box. 41. Verify that there is no Active Zoneset in the fabric. 42. Using Disk Management tool in Windows, rescan disks. All disks should now be visible. By default, Default Zone setting is Allow. This allows the HBA and the OS to see all of the devices in the absence of an Active Zoneset. July Copyright 2009 QLogic Corporation

16 43. Back in EFS, select the Stack in the tree. From the menu, select Zoning Edit Zoning Config 44. Switch_A is selected as the source switch. In the Default Zone dropdown box, change the setting to Deny 45. Click OK to change the setting and OK on the confirmation. 46. From Windows, rescan disks. 47. Are any of the raw disks available? All of the disks in the SAN are unavailable. You will now enable Default Zone on a single switch. 48. Select Switch_A in the tree. 49. From the menu, select Zoning Edit Zoning Config 50. Change the Default Zone setting to Allow. 51. Click OK to change the setting and OK on the confirmation. 52. What color is the Fabric cloud in the tree? 53. Click on the cloud. Is there a message visible? The cloud will be red and shows a message Inconsistent Zoning Configuration. Notice that all other indicators are green. There is nothing wrong with the operation of the fabric, only an inconsistency in the Zoning Configuration. 54. Using Windows, rescan disks if necessary. 55. How many raw disks do you see? Only the disks that are available from Switch_A can be seen. 56. Activate either of the Zonesets that have been configured. 57. Verify the successful activation. 58. From Disk Management, do you now have 8 raw disks? 59. Configure the Default Zone setting to Allow on both switches. Note: There are 2 ways to do this, either from the Stack or Switch_B Tech Tip 10 : The SANbox 5000 has the Default Zone parameter enabled by default. This will allow any devices that are not configured in a zone to communicate in a single zone. (Plug and Play) The SANbox 9000 has the Default Zone parameter disabled by default. This switch requires an active Zoneset to allow communication of the devices in the fabric. July Copyright 2009 QLogic Corporation

17 3.6 Domain ID Change Effects on Zoning 60. Verify that Port has been activated by checking the Active Zoneset Tab. If not, activate it. 61. Expand the active Zoneset so that the members are visible. 62. Note the Domain ID of Switch_B 63. What color are Ports 0 & 5 in Zone: portb? The 2 ports in the zone should be green. 64. What does this color indicate? Green ports indicate a device is logged into the switch. 65. Change the Domain ID of Switch_B. This may take a few seconds to complete and an error may flash across the graphic window. 66. Check the Active Zoneset tab. 67. Expand the active Zoneset so that the members are visible. 68. What color are Ports 0 & 5 in Zone: portb? The 2 ports in the zone are now gray, indicating there are no devices connected. 69. What is the Domain of the ports configured in Zone: portb? Tech Tip 11 : Domain ID changes can be catastrophic to fabrics that are using Domain/Port members. Make sure the Domain ID is locked to stop the automatic Domain ID negotiation. 70. Change the Domain ID of Switch_B back to its original setting. 71. Verify that the Zoneset Port is activated. July Copyright 2009 QLogic Corporation

18 4.0 Multiple Fabric Zoning To demonstrate fabric merges, you will need to create 2 separate fabrics. We will start by separating the switches into 2 fabrics and configuring the A fabric. 1. Restore Default Zoning on both switches in the fabric. 2. From Switch_A, configure all E_Ports Offline 3. Click the Fabric (cloud) in the EFS tree. 4. From the menu, select Fabric Rediscover Fabric. The fabric will show only Switch_A now. 5. Set the Domain ID of Switch_A to 1 and lock it. 6. On Switch_A, configure the following: a. 1 Zoneset named Active and 1 Zoneset named Gone b. Each zoneset with 3 different Zones with names of your choosing c. 2-3 ports in each zone. 7. Save and activate the Zoneset named Active. 8. Archive this switch configuration. Name the file basea.xml Now we will configure the B Fabric 9. Click the Add button on the Toolbar. 10. Enter the following information: a. Fabric Name: FabricB b. Entry Switch: IP Address of your lab s Switch_B c. Login Name: admin d. Password: password 11. Click Add Fabric 12. Set the Domain ID of Switch_B to 2 and lock it. 13. On Switch_B configure a single Zoneset with the following: a. Different name from either Zone Set on Switch A b. 2 zones (Use different names from Switch_A) c. 6 ports in each zone. 14. Save and activate this zoneset. 15. Archive this switch configuration. Name the file baseb.xml Sanity Check: Each fabric has a single switch. We made sure that the Domain IDs were unique. The Active Zonesets are different and the zoning databases are configured differently. July Copyright 2009 QLogic Corporation

19 4.1 Fabric Merge When merging fabrics, many things can prevent the fabrics from merging. The purpose of this section is to show you how to recover Zoning configuration from a successfully merged fabric. 16. On Switch_A configure all stackable ports online. Wait a few moments for the E_Port negotiation to complete. 17. Did the 2 fabrics merge? 18. Let s look at the checklist: a. Error Messages None b. Stack Created Green c. Does the Active Zoneset have all the members in it? Ideally, the 2 fabrics being merged will have different names for the zones and different members in each zone. This will create a successful merge regardless of the Zoneset name. Switch_A and Switch_B still have inconsistencies in the zoning information that is stored. The next steps will create synchronize the zoning database of the stack. 19. Click on the Stack in the tree. 20. Click Zoning to open the Zoning Database. 21. You will get a dialog box and be asked to select the source switch. Click between Switch_A and Switch_B to note the differences in the zoning information. Note: Switch_A will have the combined (merged) Zone Set configured, as well as the Gone Zone Set. Switch_B will only have the merged Zone Set, with a different name. 22. Select Switch_A as the source switch. Click OK to close the dialog box. 23. Click Apply and save the zoning. Do NOT Activate a Zone Set when saving. 24. Close the Zoning Database window(s). 25. Select Switch_B in the tree and click the Configured Zonesets Tab. 26. Compare that with Switch_A. Do they have the same information? This section does not demonstrate all of the possibilities when merging fabrics. This only shows a method of saving the merged zoning information. Because we saved the Switch_A and Switch_B configurations before we started, we could also restore the zoning that we had configured previously. Without that archive file, we could not. 20 Appendix A: Tech Tips 1 Zoning Configuration Tech Tips: The SAN Administrator should choose a single switch (or stack) in which to configure the zoning. QLogic switches will allow zoning configurations to be stored on any switch in the fabric. If this is done, finding the proper Zoneset to activate may be problematic. If a View File is used, then this switch should be the Entry Switch to the fabric. Use the Stack (Not available in QuickTools.) Use the Entry Switch 2 Naming Conventions: There are a few items to remember about the naming convention in the zoning database. Names are case-sensitive. Portzone is not the same as portzone No spaces can be used. Use an Underscore (_) to create white space in a name Names must start with an alpha character. (a-z) or (A-Z). Numbers in the first space are not allowed. 3 Save zoning information at regular intervals when configuring. 4 Using an Alias will assist in keeping all of the devices that will be together in the SAN, together in zoning. 5 The ORPHAN ZONE SET will save zones that are not currently assigned to a Zone set. 6 Stack Zoning Configuration: When configuring the Zoning Database from the Stack, it is automatically copied onto all the switches in the stack. (Not available with QuickTools) 7 In QuickTools, the Active Zoneset is an additional tab on the Faceplate Display, since there is no Topology View. In EFS, the Active Zoneset is shown on the Topology display, because the Zoneset is active fabric-wide. 8 Restore Default Zoning is only available on individual switches. This command is designed to clear a zoning database on a single switch and is not recommended for an entire stack. 9 When a Zoneset is activated, ONLY the active Zoneset gets propagated to the entire fabric. Each switch that has Merge Auto Save setting enabled will save the Active Zoneset to their memory. When using an Alias, the alias name does not get propagated to the other switches in the fabric. If the Primary switch dies, the Alias name is gone unless the Primary switch configuration was archived. Always remember to Archive a switch when a permanent configuration change is made. 10 Default Zone Setting: The SANbox 5000 series has the Default Zone parameter enabled by default. This will allow any devices that are not configured in a zone to communicate in a single zone. (Plug and Play) The SANbox 9000 series has the Default Zone parameter disabled by default. This Director-Class feature requires an active Zoneset to allow communication of the devices in the fabric. 11 Domain ID Locking: Domain ID changes can be catastrophic to fabrics that are using Domain/Port or Fibre Channel Address members.
