In this lesson, you ll be creating the scrolling list of credits or closing credits that acknowledges the people who worked on a show. By completing this lesson, you will learn how to import and format text, and make the text scroll vertically across the screen. Tutorial 1
Creating the Closing Credits To create the closing credits, you ll need an ASCII text file that contains the list of credits. After importing this list, you will format the credits and set them in motion. Preparing the Credits Before creating the roll, you can use your favorite application to prepare an ASCII text file for your credits. In this lesson, we ll be using the Windows NT Notepad. 1. From the Start button on the Windows NT desktop, click Programs > Accessories > Notepad. 2. In the Notepad window, enter the following text: To simplify the formatting of the credits, make sure you: Press Tab to separate columns of text. Press Enter after each paragraph 2 Softimage DS
Applying a Titling Effect and Importing Text You will create a track effect on the timeline effect for your title, so that you can create your credits and view them over any of the clips on the tracks below it. 1. On the timeline effect track, drag to select a region. Selected region on the timeline effect track 2. From the Image Effects toolbar, click 2D Titling to create a 2D title. The effect is applied to the selected region of the track and the 3D DVE layout is displayed. 3. To display the safe action and title guides, click the Safe Action/Title icon in the Viewer toolbar. 4. Now you can import the text file that contains the credits. From the Commands toolbar, click Import Text. 5. In the Import Text dialog box, select an ASCII text file to import. The text in the selected text file appears in a text body using the current object properties (Times New Roman in 10 points), but only part of it is visible. The text box is centered in the viewer. Formatting the Credits Once your credits are imported, you can format the credits to suit the style and personality of the show you re working on. You will be centering and kerning the job titles, adding columns to separate the text, changing the font and its size, as well as setting the credits to roll up the screen. 1. Click the Edit tool to select the text box. 2. From the Text property editor, reduce the size of the text by entering 5 in the Size box and pressing Enter. Tutorial 3
3. From the Font list, select the Viner Hand ITC font. You can try different fonts by clicking a font in the Font list and then pressing the Up Arrow or Down Arrow keys. This applies the selected font to the text. 4. Now, you will resize the text box slightly, so that the first line does not word wrap onto the next line. Using the Edit tool, select the text box. Now widen the text box by pressing Alt and dragging one of the bounding box handles on the right side of the text box. Bounding box handles Text box aligned right edge of safe title guide Using the Alt key lets you resize the text box without scaling the characters inside it. 5. Notice that the text box contains more characters than can be displayed. Using the Text tool, right-click in the text box and choose Motion > Roll from the menu. 4 Softimage DS
A scroll bar appears on the left side of the text box. Drag the scroll bar to view the rest of the credits in the text box. Scroll bar Also, the text box s Scroll Position property is automatically set up for a rolling motion from the bottom to the top of the text body. 6. To center the job titles above the names, place the insertion cursor before the word Cast, right-click and choose Align > Center from the menu. Do the same for the other job titles (Director, Executive Producer, Editor, Screenwriter, and Music), making sure the cursor is before the word. Use the scroll bar to move the text vertically within the text box. 7. To create a two-column layout for the cast members, place the insertion cursor before the name Winnie. Right-click in the text box and choose Paragraph Editor from the menu. The Paragraph Editor dialog box is where you specify columns of text. 8. To add a column to the list of cast members, click Add. You ll be using the default property for the column. The two names move slightly further apart from one another. The Tab character that you entered in your text file is interpreted as a jump to the next column. Tutorial 5
9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 for the next three names. 10. The job titles should stand out more, so we ll kern them to make them a slightly more noticeable. Select the word Director. In the Text property editor, set the Kern property to Now that you know how to manipulate text and set its properties, go ahead and experiment with the settings until you re satisfied with the look. 12. When you re finished formatting, click the red Process indicator icon to open the Processing Options dialog box. Process indicator 3D DVE effects bar 13. Make sure the 3D DVE effect bar in the timeline effect track is selected. In the Processing Options dialog box, select the Selected Object option and click OK. When processing is complete, you can play back your sequence and view the credits you created. 6 Softimage DS
