SWI-Prolog OpenGL Binding - Quickstart Guide By Jan Tatham September 3, 2012
1 SWI-Prolog OpenGL Bindings 1.1 is an open source project that aims to develop a complete cross-platform (Windows, Mac OSX and Linux) SWI-Prolog binding for the OpenGL, GLU and GLUT 3D graphics libraries. 1.2 OpenGL OpenGL is the industry s most widely used and supported 2D and 3D graphics application programming interface (API), incorporating a broad set of rendering, texture mapping, special effects, and other powerful visualisation functions. 1.3 GLUT GLUT is the OpenGL Utility Toolkit, a window system independent API toolkit for writing OpenGL programs. Page 1
2 Building This section covers the basic steps needed to build for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux. 2.1 Windows Prerequisites The Code::Blocks IDE MinGW Compiler GLUT - The OpenGL Utility Toolkit Building from Source 1. If Code::Blocks IDE and MinGW Compiler is already installed on your system, then goto step 4, else continue on to the next step. 2. Download Code::Blocks IDE and MinGW Compiler from the Code::Blocks website Be sure to download the binary release and select the Code- Blocks with MinGW. As of writing this tutorial, the file that you need to download is codeblocks-10.05mingw-setup.exe. 3. Install Code::Blocks and MinGW by opening the file that you just downloaded in Step 2. The default options are sufficient for building. 4. If you already have GLUT installed, continue on to step 6, else download GLUT. You can obtain a copy from the Sebity website, 5. Extract the GLUT file that you just downloaded and do the following:- (a) Copy glut.dll into your C:\Windows\System32 folder (If you re using Windows 7 64-bit, you ll need to copy this file into C:\Windows\sysWOW64 ). (b) Copy glut.h into the include\gl folder that is located in the MinGW compiler folder. If you installed CodeBlocks and MinGW to the default directory in Step 3, this folder will be C:\Program Files\CodeBlocks\MinGW\include\GL. (c) Copy libglut32.a into the MinGW\lib folder. If you installed CodeBlocks and MinGW to the default directory in Step 3, this folder will be C:\Program Files\CodeBlocks\MinGW\lib. 6. If you have not already done so, either clone the latest tag release of from or download and extract the zip file. 7. Open the project by navigating to: C:\< location>\codeblocks win\.cbp 8. Update Projects Linker Settings and Search Directories with your SWI-Prolog s installation paths. 9. Create the.dll library, simply by selecting Build>Build from the top menu. Page 2
2.2 Mac OSX and Linux Prerequisites GCC Compiler GLUT - The OpenGL Utility Toolkit Building from Source - Mac OSX 1. To compile, you will need to have the GCC compiler installed. Mac OSX does not install the GCC compiler by default, but it is freely available in the Xcode suite of development tools. To install the GCC compiler, download the Xcode package from 2. You do not need to install GLUT on Mac OSX as it is already installed by default. 3. If you have not already done so, either clone the latest tag release of from or download and extract the tar/zip file. 4. Change into the / directory and then open the makefile with a text editor, and update the MACFLAGS with the location to the SWI-Prolog include folder, e.g. MACFLAGS=-L/System/Library/Frameworks/OpenGL.framework/Libraries \ -I/opt/local/lib/swipl /include \ -framework Cocoa -framework OpenGL -framework GLUT installed on your system. Then save the file and exit the editor. 5. You are now ready to make the file, type the following in terminal: > make Building from Source - Linux 1. To compile, you will need to have the GCC compiler installed. If you do not have GCC installed, use either your Linux distributions package manager to download and install or refer to your distributions help pages. 2. Once the GCC compiler and its dependencies are installed, you need to download and install the GLUT library if is not already installed. Once again either use your distributions package manager, or refer to the distributions help pages. 3. If you have not already done so, either clone the latest tag release of from or download and extract the tar file. 4. Change into the / directory and then open the makefile with a text editor, and update the NIXFLAGS with the location to the SWI-Prolog include folder, e.g. NIXFLAGS=-I/root/lib/swipl /include installed on your system. Then save the file and exit the editor. 5. You are now ready to make the file, type the following in terminal: > make linux Page 3
3 Basic Usage 3.1 Setup does require setting up, but luckily it is easy. All that is required is to open the.pl file and comment/uncomment the libraries that is associated with the OS that is running on. For example, is you are using a Windows System, update the load foreign library line to look like: % Windows Library :-load_foreign_library(.dll ). % Mac/Linux Library %:-load_foreign_library(.so ). If you are using on Mac OSX, then reverse the comments on the load foreign library line. 3.2 Command Line Usage can be run from the terminal using the following command:- > swipl -g main -s example.pl 3.3 Examples There are numerous examples included with within the examples/ folder. These prolog conversion of examples taken from the OpenGL Programming Guide (Red Book), 3rd edition, and the first nine lessons from NeHe OpenGL Online tutorials, To run an example from the terminal, type the following:- > cd examples > swipl -g main -s helloword.pl Page 4
4 Basic OpenGL Scene This is an example of a simple OpenGL scene using plopengl. As you can tell it is fairly similar to a C Programming Language version. 1 : [. p l ]. 3 width (250). h e i g h t (250). 5 d i s p l a y : 7 kgl COLOR BUFFER BIT(COLOR BUFFER), kgl POLYGON(POLYGON), 9 g l C l e a r (COLOR BUFFER), g l C o l o r 3 f ( 1. 0, 1. 0, 1. 0 ), 11 glbegin (POLYGON), g l V e r t e x 3 f ( , , 0. 0 ), 13 g l V e r t e x 3 f ( , , 0. 0 ), g l V e r t e x 3 f ( , , 0. 0 ), 15 g l V e r t e x 3 f ( , , 0. 0 ), glend, 17 g l F l u s h. 19 i n i t : kgl PROJECTION(PROJECTION), 21 g l C l e a r C o l o r ( 0. 0, 0. 0, 0. 0, 0. 0 ), glmatrixmode (PROJECTION), 23 g lloadidentity, glortho ( 0. 0, 1. 0, 0. 0, 1. 0, 1.0, 1. 0 ). 25 main: 27 width (W), h e i g h t (H), 29 kglut DOUBLE(DOUBLE), kglut RGB(RGB), 31 g l u t I n i t, glutinitdisplaymode (DOUBLE \/ RGB), 33 glutinitwindowsize (W, H), glutinitwindowposition ( 0, 0 ), 35 glutcreatewindow ( H e l l o World ), i n i t, 37 glutdisplayfunc, glutmainloop.
