4 WARNING ELECTRIC SHOCK CAN KILL Disconnect electrical power before performing any maintenance. See the Safety section of the EDGE Pro Instruction Manual or the MicroEDGE Pro Instruction Manual for more safety precautions. Introduction Purpose This field service bulletin enables an end-user to update the software in an EDGE Pro or MicroEDGE Pro CNC by replacing the hard disk drive. These procedures assume that the existing hard disk drive is operational and that the data stored on it can be recovered and Kit Contents Part number Description Qty Hard disk drive pre-loaded with Phoenix V9.x Phoenix 9.x Hard Disk Drive Replacement (FSB) USB Flash Drive loaded with: 1 PDF file of the FSB RestrNet.bat SaveNet.bat Tools and Time Flat head screwdriver Phillips screwdriver USB keyboard USB mouse Estimated time required: 30 minutes iv Field Service Bulletin
5 Overview Use the following procedures to upgrade Phoenix software in an EDGE Pro or MicroEDGE Pro CNC by replacing the hard disk drive: 1. Power off and disable all drives and motors. 2. Copy files from the CNC to a USB Flash drive (memory stick.) 3. Replace the hard disk drive in the CNC. 4. Reload the files from the memory stick to the CNC. 5. Request a new HASP password from Hypertherm Automation. 6. Save three copies of the setup file and back up the new hard disk drive using Norton Ghost utility. 7. If the Hypertherm Returned Materials representative requests it, return your original hard disk drive to Hypertherm. For more detailed instructions, follow the steps in the remaining procedures. Disable drives Verify that all drives and motors are disabled. Copy files The next step in the upgrade procedure is to copy all your customized files to the memory stick that is included in this kit. On the EDGE Pro, this procedure is easier if you can alternate between a USB keyboard and mouse connected to the USB port on the front of the CNC. 1. Power ON the CNC. 1. When the Hypertherm logo displays, insert the memory stick in a USB port. 2. If the Looking for Hardware Key... message displays, wait for it to disappear. 3. Press the Windows key ( ) on the keyboard or press Ctrl/Esc to open the Windows Start menu. 4. Select Windows Explorer > My Computer > Local Disk (C:). 5. On the Local Disk, double-click on the Phoenix folder to open it. 6. Copy the following files to the memory stick: Phoenix.ini Parts folder and all its files Cut Charts folder and all its files Other customized files (including customized files in the Help folder) that must be moved to the new hard drive Field Service Bulletin 1
6 7. Record the networked drives that have been mapped to local drive letters so you can restore them on the new hard disk drive. 8. In Windows Explorer, double-click on Removable Disk and on SaveNet.bat. This program file automatically records the network configuration and stores it on the memory stick as location1.txt. 9. Remove the memory stick. Replace the hard disk drive To replace the hard disk drive: 1. Power OFF the CNC and unplug the power cord from the power source. 2. Remove the 6 screws on the front door of the CNC and open the door. 3. Locate the hard disk drive inside the CNC enclosure, on the upper right side. Use a Phillips screwdriver to unfasten the 4 screws on the outside of the hard disk drive mounting bracket and release the hard drive. 2 Field Service Bulletin
7 6. Slide the hard drive from the mounting bracket. 7. Carefully remove the replacement hard disk drive from the packaging by touching only the sides. Avoid touching the circuits. 8. Slide the new hard drive into the hard drive mounting bracket so that the cable connections are visible on the left side of the hard drive. 9. Refasten the screws in the hard drive enclosure so they secure the hard drive. 10. Reconnect the cable connectors to the connections on the hard drive. 11. Close the enclosure of the CNC and refasten the screws. Reload files To load files from the memory stick: 1. Plug in the power cord and power ON the CNC. 2. If the Looking for Hardware Key... message displays, wait for it to disappear. 3. Plug in the USB keyboard. 4. Click Enter to accept the copyright notice. 5. If the prompt shown above displays, enter 7MOREDAYS at the Hardware Key prompt and press Enter twice. 6. Press or click Enter to accept the Unable to load some... message, if it appears. 7. If the Hardware Key prompt displays again, press or click Enter. 8. The touch screen will need calibration. When the Preview Window displays, press F4 (Setups), F6 (Diagnostics), then F8 (System) to start calibrating the touch screen. Field Service Bulletin 3
8 9. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the calibration. 10. Press Cancel twice to return to the Preview Window. 11. Press Alt/F4 to exit the Phoenix software. 12. Plug the memory stick in the USB port on the CNC. 13. Press the Windows key on the keyboard or press Ctrl/Esc to open the Windows Start menu. 14. Select Windows Explorer > My Computer > Removable Disk to view the contents of the memory stick. 15. Double-click on RestrNet.bat. This file automatically restores the Ethernet adapter settings. 16. Leave the memory stick plugged in. 17. Close Windows Explorer by pressing Alt/F4 on the keyboard. 18. Press Ctrl/Esc to open the Windows Start menu. 19. In the Windows Start menu, click on Phoenix to relaunch Phoenix software. 20. Press OK to accept the copyright message. 21. When the message, Looking for Hardware Key, Please Wait... displays, wait for it to disappear. 22. On the password screen, press or click OK. You do not need to enter a password. 23. From the Main screen, select Setups > Password and enter the Special screen password. The default Special screen password is Press or click OK. 25. Press or click Load Setups. 26. On the Load Setups screen, select Memory Stick from the Load Setups from dropdown list. 27. Select the Phoenix file in the Setup files window and press OK. 28. If the message, Unable to load some of the setups... displays, press OK. 29. Verify that the system is operating correctly by moving the joystick and observing table motion. 30. Press Alt/F4 to exit Phoenix software. 4 Field Service Bulletin
9 31. To return to Windows Explorer, press the Windows key on the keyboard or press Ctrl/Esc to open the Windows Start menu. 32. Select Windows Explorer > My Computer and expand Local Disk (C:). 33. Double-click on Removable Disk. 34. Plug in the USB mouse. 35. From the Removable Disk, copy the Cut Charts and Parts folders to the C:\Phoenix folder on the hard drive. 36. Click on Yes to All to confirm that you want to overwrite existing files each time. 37. Copy any other customized files from the memory stick to the appropriate folders on the hard drive. 38. Remap the network drives that you recorded in the previous procedure. 39. Exit Windows Explorer and all other windows. 40. Press Ctrl/Esc or the Windows key to return to the Windows Start menu. 41. Click on Phoenix to relaunch the Phoenix software Request a new password If you had to enter the 7MOREDAYS HASP password, it is only effective for 7 days. Before that HASP password expires, you must the setup file that you saved from your old hard drive to Hypertherm and request a new HASP password. 1. the Phoenix.ini file that you saved in Step 3 of Copy Files to Return.Materials@Hypertherm.com and request a new HASP password for Phoenix for a hard disk drive replacement. 2. After you receive this new HASP password, power ON the CNC. 3. Enter the new HASP password and click OK. If you are not able to enter text, press on the message window to focus the screen. 4. Verify the operation of your system or use the procedure that you receive with the HASP password. Field Service Bulletin 5
10 Save the setup file To save the setup file: 1. From the Main screen, select Setups > Password and enter the Special screen password and press OK. The default Special screen password is Press or click the Save Setups soft key. 3. On the Save Setups screen, select Hard Drive from the Save setups to dropdown list. 4. Enter the current date in the Setups file name field and press or click OK. 5. Press or click the Save Setups soft key again. 6. On the Save Setups screen, select Hard Drive from the Save setups to dropdown list. 7. Enter DEFAULT in the Setups file name field and press or click OK. 8. Insert the memory stick and press the Save Setups soft key a third time. 9. On the Save Setups screen, select Memory Stick from the Save setups to dropdown list. 10. Enter the current date in the Setups file name field; this is your backup setup file. 11. Remove the memory stick and keep it in a safe place. 6 Field Service Bulletin
11 Back up the hard drive To back up the hard drive on your CNC: 1. Plug in a USB keyboard. 2. Exit Phoenix and restart your system. 3. Watch the startup screens carefully and use the Down arrow ( ) and Enter keys to select Ghost Recover/Restore Utility when it displays. 4. At the prompt, press 1 to create a new backup file. 5. Follow the instructions on the screen. Return the hard drive If the Hypertherm Returned Materials representative asked you to return your old hard disk drive to Hypertherm, do so after you have finished replacing the hard disk drive in your CNC and have saved three copies of the setup file. Send your old hard disk drive to the nearest Hypertherm Technical Service location. Field Service Bulletin 7
