2 Lesson 1 Computer System Basics Computer: is an electronic set which has the ability to store data and process them to reach certain results {information} by doing logical and mathematical processes using series of logical arranged instructions called the program. 3 A complete computer system consists of four parts: The computer system consists of several components working together to enable the computer to do its function. The most important components are: 1) Data & information. 2) Hardware. 3) Software. 4) Human ware. Humanware consists of bits of information that's stored or used by a computer, it is organized into files, it does not have any meaning until it is processed and turned into something useful (Information). computer stores data of all types: 1) Words (Text). 2) Numbers. 3) Images. 4) Sounds and Videos. - 2

6 2- Main Memory A- Random Access Memory (RAM): Is a computer's temporary storage place, where it gets work done it is the memory which the user use. The amount of Ram is a very important factor in a computer performance. It loses its contents when an electrical interruption happens B- Read-only memory (ROM): It contains the necessary programs to run the device (Bios) Those programs are stored in it from the manufacture And it was named the memory of reading only because Normal User can read and can't overwrite, Also It is called permanent memory because its content is static and not affected by the electrical interruption. - 5
7 3-Computer Processor: It s hidden inside the computer known as the Central Processing Unit (CPU) the brain of the computer, it is the part of the computer that performs all the work, it calculates, it processes and keeps things running smoothly. The Processor is consists of two main parts : - Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU) - Control Unit - 6
8 Used to store data and information which can be retrieved at any time according to the needs of the User PC processes data in streams of bits (the smallest component of computer data) it can be 1 or 0 known as the binary system. 11 Is a program that tells your computer what to do, It translates between users and computers and it can be divided into: Operating Systems (Linux Windows) Applications(Formatting Text Programs) Utility Programs(Anti- Virus, PDF Tool) Programming Languages (C++ ) They are what makes a computer runs. Tells computers how to store data in an organized way. Makes sure that all the different input and output devices are working together. They are grouped according to the task they are performing. - 10

18 Lesson 2 Operating Systems Operating system is the most important kinds of computer programs as there must be an operating system installed in the computer to be able to run the other types of different programs and applications and managing the Hardware of the computer. **Operating system definition: It is a set of programs responsible for managing the hard ware of the computer. On one hand it is the communication between the user with his programs and the hard ware on the other hand. Users can interact directly with the operating system through a user interface such as a command Prompt (Terminal) or a graphical user interface (GUI). Open Source Operating Systems: 1- Linux: Is an operating system which is easy to use and has the ability to modify and develop. Has different distributions (Ubuntu Fedora) - 20
22 Operating Systems for mobile phones There is an Open Source and Closed Source OS Android is an example for Open Source OS which is used in mobile phones and Tablets. The basic components of the opening screen in different operating systems are similar in: 1- Background: consists of a color or an image which can be changed by the user. 2- Icons: small symbols are used to start different programs by double click the mouse. 3- Bars : Contains a set of Icons display some programs on the operating system and other Icons to manage some settings such as (date time-voice network). Note: The computer can have more than one operating system but when the computer start you should select only one OS to load. - 21

24 Lesson 3 Dealing with files and folders The most important feature of the operating system is its ability to control the File management and organize them into folders and indexes. Any Operating System depends on "File System" Which is used to control how to store, retrieve, organize and manage files. File: Is a collection of Data which is stored within the storage unit with various types and extensions. The user can handle it either with retrieving, modifying, deleting, or printing them. Any image, Text Document, sound clip, or video is a File To organize the related files in a same place put them in a Folder The File Name consists of : 1- The name of the File (any name) 2- The extension (file type) 3- Dot ( between name and type) Hello Dot. txt File Name Extension (File Type) - 23
25 Types of Files : 1- Video files Those files contain sound clips and the image which is made by the video or sound programs. 2- Image Files It is created by drawing programs and has different extensions according to its resolution and size. 3- Text Files Created by some Desktop Files such as (Microsoft Office Libre Office) - 24
26 4- System Files Belongs to the Operating System, Programs and the devices connected to the computer. * To create a text file or.txt file on a computer 1- Open a text editor such as Notepad or any other Word Processing Software. 2- Write your text 3- Save the file as a text file To save a text file follow those steps : A- Open File menu B- Select Save As (Save as box will open) * Write the File Name * select the Location to save in C- Press Save - 25

36 1- Local Area Network ( LAN ) It is a computer network within a small geographical area such as a home, school, computer laboratory, office building or group of buildings. 2- Wide Area Network (WAN) It is a network that exists over a large-scale geographical area. It connects different smaller networks, including local area networks (LAN). This ensures that computers and users in one location can communicate with computers and users in other locations. File Sharing Sharing files is the process of spreading digitally stored information, such as documents, multimedia (audio/video), graphics, computer programs, images and some hardware during the network. - 35

43 Creating and modifying images Programs *A program for creating and modifying images used to assist in designing, creating and modifying different images. *It enables the user to modify photos or drawings. *There are many of those programs which are a closed and open source programs; such as: GIMP Adobe Photoshop Open source Closed source The GIMP program is an open and free source that allows creating and processing images. Gimp Window is available in two shapes 1- Multi Window Mode 2- Single Window Mode To Transfer from Multi Window Mode to Single Window Mode Press the Windows menu Single-Window Mode - 42

48 Lesson 2 Designing and Creating New Images Creating a new Image File: To create a new image file (New Image) from the File menu choose New, a dialogue box appears which requests the dimensions of the new image (length and width), its resolution. * To create a new image file File menu New Template: Templates are ready made designs previously prepared of the dimensions and the resolution of the picture. 2- Image Size: To identify the dimensions of the new image (length and width) click on the arrows. 3- Advanced Options: by clicking on + sign the rest of the dialogue box appears as follows: - 47
49 4- X resolution and Y resolution: This is used to determine the image resolution when printing (and it does not affect the picture dimension) 5- Color Space: This is used to determine the Image color system *RGB color: The image is created in the Red, Green, Blue color system. *Grayscale: The image is created in black and white, with various shades of gray. 6-Fill menu: you specify the background color that is used for your new image Save Image through the command Save from the File menu The GIMP program offers the extension XCF to the image file, to save all the information about the image. - 48

51 Lesson 3 Paint tools Paint tools are used for different drawing purposes such as free hand drawing, create gradient color scheme, and merge the current color with the surrounding colors, copy part of the picture in another place in the same image. *The Paint Tools that can be accessed from the Tool Menu 1-Pencil Tool: The pen in the "Pencil" tool is used for free hand drawing Different shapes & Sizes of brushes 2-Blend Tool: is used to make color gradation using the front or back colors. Modifications are made to the options of the tool to get the gradient color scheme required. - 50
52 3-Smudge Tool : is used to mix the current color with the surrounding colors in the area of moving the tool. 4-Clone Tool: is used to copy part of the picture in another place (in the same image layer). It is used to modify and reform the images. If you want to clone from an image, instead of a pattern, you must tell GIMP which image you want to copy from. You do this by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking in the desired source image. Until you have set the source in this way, you will not be able to paint with the Clone tool: the tool cursor tells you this by showing a forbidden symbol.
