INTRODUCTION THE FERMOSTAT IS DUAL-STAGE, PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTAT DESIGNED TO CONTROL A FERMENTATION CHAMBER DURING THE FERMENTATION PHASE OF HOME BREWING BEER. THE FERMOSTAT CAN CONTROL BOTH A HEATING AND A COOLING SOURCE. IT WORKS BY CONTROLLING THE TEMPERATURE OF A MEDIUM (E.G. ENCLOSED AREA, LIQUID, ETC.) BY PROVIDING THE POWER TO A SPECIFIED HEATING/COOLING CIRCUIT WHILE CONSTANTLY MONITORING THE TEMPERATURE FROM THE THERMOSTAT. THE FERMOSTAT'S PRIMARY INTENT IS TO CONTROL THE TEMPERATURE OF BEER OR WINE DURING THE FERMENTATION STAGE OF THE HOME BREWING PROCESS. IT CAN ALSO BE USED FOR CONTROLLING TEMPERATURES FOR STORING ITEMS (SUCH AS BEER) WITHIN A TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED AREA. THE FERMOSTAT HAS THE ABILITY TO RUN A STORED PROGRAM THAT WILL CREATE A TEMPERATURE PROFILE OVER THE COURSE OF THE FERMENTATION PROCESS. IT COMES WITH SEVERAL STORED PROGRAMS AND YOU HAVE THE ABILITY TO CREATE AND STORE YOUR OWN USER-GENERATED PROGRAMS. THE PROCEDURE FOR THIS IS EXPLAINED IN THE 'HOW TO USE' SECTION. THE FERMOSTAT HAS A MICROSD (μsd) CARD SLOT TO ALLOW EXTERNAL CONNECTIVITY. THE μsd CARD SLOT CREATES THE ABILITY TO DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS CREATED FROM THE OHMBREW AUTOMATIONS' FERMOSTAT MANAGEMENT WEBSITE: MYFERMOSTAT.COM. THE μsd CARD SLOT ALSO ALLOWS YOU TO TRANSFER HISTORICAL LOG DATA FROM YOUR FERMOSTAT TO A COMPUTER FOR ANALYSIS AND VIEWING ON THE WEBSITE. Ohmbrew Automations,
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS TO START USING YOUR FERMOSTAT, LOCATE AN OUTLET NEAR THE REFRIGERATION UNIT. THE OUTLET SHOULD BE A GROUNDED CIRCUIT CAPABLE OF HANDLING 15 AMPS. INSERT THE FERMOSTAT'S INCLUDED INPUT POWER CORD INTO THE INPUT POWER PORT LOCATED ON THE BOTTOM OF THE UNIT. WITH THE POWER CORD ATTACHED, PLUG THE UNIT INTO A NEARBY POWER OUTLET. YOU SHOULD NOW NOTICE THE MAIN SCREEN LIGHT UP AND START TO SHOW THE OHMBREW AUTOMATIONS SPLASH SCREEN. AFTER INITIAL BOOT UP, THE FERMOSTAT WILL SHOW THE HOME SCREEN AND CONTINUE IN THE MODE THAT WAS RUNNING WHEN THE UNIT WAS POWERED OFF. THE FACTORY DEFAULT SETTINGS INITIALIZE THE UNIT TO THE 'MANUAL TEMP' MODE. THE TWO OUTPUT POWER CORDS ARE USED TO EXTEND THE SWITCHED POWER TO THE HEATING AND COOLING UNITS. THE SWITCHED POWER OUTLETS OF THE FERMOSTAT ARE LOCATED ON THE BOTTOM OF THE UNIT. THESE OUTLETS ARE LABELED 'cool' AND 'heat'. YOU CAN NOW PLUG YOUR HEATING AND COOLING UNITS INTO THE OUTLET PLUGS WITH THE RESPECTIVE LABELING. INSERT THE BAYONET STYLE CONNECTOR OF THE THERMOMETER CABLE INTO THE THERMOMETER INPUT PORT ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE FERMOSTAT. THE STAINLESS STEEL SENSOR END OF THE CABLE NEEDS TO BE ROUTED INTO THE TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED CHAMBER OR VESSEL. PLACING THE SENSOR CLOSE TO, OR SUBMERSED IN, THE CONTAINER HOLDING YOUR BEER WILL RESULT IN MORE ACCURATE AND RESPONSIVE READINGS. THE FERMOSTAT IS EQUIPPED WITH MOUNTING FLANGES ON THE BACK OF DEVICE TO ALLOW IT TO BE MOUNTED NEAR THE UNIT BEING CONTROLLED. Ohmbrew Automations,
HOW TO USE INTERACTION WITH THE FERMOSTAT IS DESIGNED TO BE USER-FRIENDLY AND INTUITIVE. THE FERMOSTAT CONTAINS A MENU SYSTEM THAT IS SIMILAR TO MANY CONSUMER ELECTRONIC DEVICES. THE INTERFACE DISPLAY IS CREATED USING A 128 X 64 PIXEL GRAPHIC LCD SCREEN. USER INPUT IS CREATED WITH A SCROLL WHEEL AND MENU/ENTER BUTTON ON FACE-PLATE OF THE DEVICE. THE MENU/ENTER BUTTON IS LOCATED IN THE CENTER OF THE SCROLL WHEEL. THE BUTTON IS A SINGLE FUNCTION, MOMENTARY CONNECTION SWITCH. DEPRESSING THE BUTTON OR HOLDING IT IN THE DEPRESSED POSITION ARE THE ONLY CAPABILITIES OF THIS BUTTON. THE SCROLL WHEEL CAN ROTATE BOTH CLOCKWISE AND COUNTER-CLOCKWISE. IT IS A 12 POSITION WHEEL. THE POSITIONS ARE INDICATED ON THE WHEEL BY AN AUDIBLE CLICK AS WELL AS A TACTILE 'CLICK' AS YOU ARE TURNING THE WHEEL. THE BUTTON AND SCROLL WHEEL ARE USED TO NAVIGATE YOUR WAY THROUGH THE MENU SYSTEM OF THE FERMOSTAT AS WELL AS CREATING AND MODIFYING PROGRAMS WITHIN THE UNIT. HOME SCREEN THE INFORMATION CONTAINED ON THE SCREEN WHEN THE FERMOSTAT IS IN NORMAL MODE, WITH NO USER ACTIVITY IN PROCESS IS CALLED THE HOME SCREEN (SEE IMAGE 1). THIS SCREEN CONTAINS THE CURRENT STATUS OF THE FERMOSTAT, INCLUDING THE PROGRAM BEING RUN (IF A PROGRAM IS RUNNING), THE STAGE OF THE CURRENT PROGRAM, HOW LONG THIS STAGE HAS BEEN ACTIVE, THE CURRENT TEMPERATURE OF THE CHAMBER AS WELL AS THE DESIRED TEMPERATURE. THE HOME SCREEN ALSO CONTAINS ANY STATUS AND ERROR MESSAGE INDICATORS TO UPDATE THE USER TO THE CURRENT STATUS OF THE FERMOSTAT. Image 1: Fermostat Home Screen Ohmbrew Automations,

EACH SCREEN BREAKS THE USAGE INTO THE TIME ENABLED FOR THE PREVIOUS DAY, PREVIOUS WEEK AND PREVIOUS MONTH. EACH SCREEN ALSO SHOWS THE NUMBER OF POWER CYCLES THAT HAVE OCCURRED FOR EACH STAGE. SD CARD THE 'SD CARD' MENU SELECTION ALLOWS YOU TO UPLOAD HISTORICAL LOG DATA FROM THE FERMOSTAT AS WELL AS DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS CREATED WITH MYFERMOSTAT.COM. THESE FEATURES ARE CURRENTLY IN BETA TEST, THIS SECTION WILL BE UPDATED WHEN THIS FUNCTIONALITY HAS BEEN OFFICIALLY RELEASED. Ohmbrew Automations,
SETTINGS THE FERMOSTAT'S SETTINGS MENU CAN BE REACHED BY SELECTING THE ' SETTINGS' SELECTION FROM THE TOP MENU LIST. THIS SECTION CONTAINS IMPORTANT SETTINGS REGARDING THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THE FERMOSTAT. THE DEFAULT SETTINGS CONTAINED WITHIN THE SETTINGS MENU ARE GENERALLY SUFFICIENT FOR FERMOSTAT APPLICATIONS. HOWEVER, IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN FINE TUNING SOME THE ASPECTS OF THIS DEVICE, THIS IS THE PLACE TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN. TEMPERATURE SCALE (TEMP SCALE) THIS SELECTION ALLOWS YOU TO CHANGE THE TEMPERATURE SCALE OF THE FERMOSTAT BETWEEN FAHRENHEIT (F) AND CELSIUS (C). DELTA TEMPERATURE (DELTA TEMP) THIS SELECTION ALLOWS YOU TO SET THE TEMPERATURE DIFFERENTIAL OF THE FERMOSTAT. THE TEMPERATURE DIFFERENTIAL IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SET TEMPERATURE AND THE TEMPERATURE THE FERMOSTAT TRIPS THE RELAY TO RECOVER THE TEMPERATURE. FOR EXAMPLE, IF THE SET TEMPERATURE IS 68 DEGREES AND THE TEMPERATURE DIFFERENTIAL IS 2 DEGREES, THE FERMOSTAT WILL NOT KICK ON THE REFRIGERATION UNIT UNTIL IT ECLIPSES 70 DEGREES. HEAT/COOL ENABLE THESE SELECTIONS ALLOW YOU TO ENABLE OR DISABLE THE HEAT OR COOL FUNCTIONALITY OF THE FERMOSTAT. DISABLING EITHER THE HEAT OR COOL FUNCTIONALITY WILL PREVENT ANY POWER BEING OUTPUT ON THAT PARTICULAR POWER OUTLET. HEAT/COOL CYCLE THESE SELECTIONS ALLOW YOU TO SET THE RECYCLE TIMES FOR THE HEAT AND COOL OUTLETS. THE RECYCLE TIME IS THE AMOUNT OF TIME THAT AN OUTLET IS REQUIRED TO STAY IN THE OFF POSITION BEFORE THE SYSTEM WILL ALLOW IT TO POWER BACK ON. SETTING AN APPROPRIATE RECYCLE TIME WILL PREVENT HARDWARE DAMAGE TO YOUR HEATING AND/OR COOLING APPLIANCES AS WELL AS PREVENT ANY SYSTEM TEMPERATURE OSCILLATIONS. THE RANGE FOR THIS SELECTION IS 2 MINUTES UP TO 90 MINUTES. BACKLIGHT THIS SELECTION WILL SETUP THE NUMBER OF MINUTES THE LCD BACKLIGHT WILL STAY ON AFTER THE LAST USER INTERACTION. A SELECTION OF '0' WILL LEAVE THE BACKLIGHT ON INDEFINITELY. THE OPTIONS FOR THIS SELECTION ARE 0, 1, 2, 5, 10, 30, 60. Ohmbrew Automations,
DEMO MODE ENABLING DEMO MODE WILL CAUSE THE INTERNAL CLOCK TO RUN AT AN ELEVATED RATE TO DEMONSTRATE AND TEST PROGRAMS, THIS IS ESPECIALLY USEFUL FOR GRADIENT STAGES. WHEN 'DEMO MODE' IS ENABLED, '##DEMO MODE##' WILL BE DISPLAYED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DISPLAY SCREEN TO SERVE AS A CAUTION. ALSO, DURING THIS MODE, THE RELAY ENABLING POWER TO YOUR REFRIGERATION UNIT WILL BE DISABLED TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO YOUR HARDWARE. **CAUTION** MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT HAVE DEMO MODE ENABLED WHEN USING THE FERMOSTAT IN NORMAL MODE. FACTORY RESET THIS SELECTION WILL RESTORE THE FERMOSTAT TO ITS ORIGINAL FACTORY SETTINGS. THE FERMOSTAT WILL ASK YOU TO CONFIRM YOUR INTENTIONS BEFORE PERFORMING ANY ACTIONS. THIS SELECTION WILL ALSO CLEAR ANY PROGRAM THAT THE FERMOSTAT MIGHT HAVE IN-PROGRESS. THIS FUNCTION IS A GOOD WAY TO RESTORE THE FERMOSTAT BACK FROM AN UNKNOWN CONFIGURATION. **CAUTION** EXECUTING THIS FEATURE WILL REMOVE ANY AND ALL PROGRAMS YOU HAVE CREATED IN THE FERMOSTAT. ABOUT THIS SELECTION SHOWS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR FERMOSTAT. INFORMATION IN THIS SCREEN INCLUDES THE HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE VERSION OF YOUR FERMOSTAT AS WELL AS THE ERRORS THAT ARE CURRENTLY SET FOR THE SYSTEM. THIS SECTION ALSO ALLOWS YOU TO RESET ANY ERRORS THAT ARE CURRENTLY SET. YOU CAN VIEW ERROR INFORMATION BY SELECTING THE 'ERRORS->' TEXT IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT HAND CORNER OF THE SCREEN. Ohmbrew Automations,
CREATING A PROGRAM ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT FEATURES OF THE FERMOSTAT IS THE ABILITY TO CREATE AND RUN PROGRAMS. YOU CAN CREATE A PROGRAM ONLINE AT MYFERMOSTAT.COM OR MANUALLY THROUGH THE MENU SYSTEM OF THE FERMOSTAT. THE FOLLOWING SECTION FOCUSES ON CREATING PROGRAMS WITH THE FERMOSTAT ITSELF. A FERMOSTAT PROGRAM CONSISTS OF A SERIES OF STEPS. EACH STEP IS MADE UP OF A START TEMPERATURE, A STOP TEMPERATURE AND A DURATION. YOU ALSO HAVE THE ABILITY TO SET MULTIPLE OPTIONS FOR EACH STEP TO FURTHER MODIFY THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THAT PARTICULAR STEP. TO CREATE AND STORE A PROGRAM ON THE FERMOSTAT, ENTER THE MENU SYSTEM BY PRESSING AND HOLDING THE MENU/ENTER BUTTON ON THE FRONT OF THE FERMOSTAT. USE THE SCROLL WHEEL TO NAVIGATE DOWN TO THE ' PROGRAMS' SELECTION ON THE TOP MENU OF THE FERMOSTAT AND PRESS MENU/ENTER. WITHIN THE PROGRAMS MENU, SELECT ' ADD'. NAMING PROGRAMS THE FIRST TASK REQUIRED WHEN ADDING A NEW PROGRAM IS TO NAME THE PROGRAM. THERE ARE VERY FEW RESTRICTIONS TO WHAT CHARACTERS YOU CAN USE TO NAME YOUR NEW PROGRAM, SPACES, NUMBERS AND SPECIAL CHARACTERS ARE ALL AVAILABLE FOR THE NAME. YOU ARE ALSO PERMITTED TO REUSE PROGRAM NAMES IF YOU CHOOSE. YOU CREATE A PROGRAM NAME BY SELECTING EACH CHARACTER AND CONTINUING TO THE NEXT CHARACTER. TO SELECT A CHARACTER, SCROLL BACK AND FORTH THROUGH THE POSSIBLE CHARACTERS WITH THE SCROLL WHEEL AND SELECT THE SPECIFIED CHARACTER WITH THE MENU/ENTER BUTTON. CONTINUE WITH THIS PROCESS UNTIL THE NAME IS COMPLETE. AT THIS POINT, PRESS AND HOLD THE MENU/ENTER BUTTON TO GET TO THE NAVIGATION AREA OF THE SCREEN. ONCE THERE, YOU CAN CONTINUE WITH THE NEXT STEP BY SELECTING 'NEXT ', CANCEL ADDING THE PROGRAM BY SELECTING 'CANCEL', OR CLEAR THE NAME YOU HAVE SELECTED AND START THE NAMING PROCESS OVER BY SELECTING 'CLEAR'. Image 2: Add Program - Name Ohmbrew Automations,
ADDING STEPS ONCE YOU HAVE NAMED YOUR PROGRAM, CONTINUE ON TO THE NEXT PHASE OF ADDING STEPS TO YOUR PROGRAM BY SELECTING 'NEXT '. EACH PROGRAM CAN CONSIST OF 8 DIFFERENT STEPS. THE ADD STEP SCREEN IS SHOWN IN IMAGE 2. THE UPPER (EDIT) PORTION OF THE SCREEN ALLOWS YOU TO EDIT THE START TEMPERATURE, END TEMPERATURE, DURATION AND NAME OF EACH STEP. WITH THE FOCUS IN THE UPPER (EDIT) PORTION OF THE ADD STEP SCREEN, YOU HAVE THE ABILITY TO CHANGE EACH VARIABLE WITHIN THE STEP. THE INVERTED TEXT IS THE VARIABLE THAT IS CURRENTLY BEING EDITED. TO EDIT THIS VARIABLE, SCROLL THE WHEEL UNTIL YOU GET TO THE DESIRED SETTING AND PRESS THE MENU/ENTER BUTTON TO MOVE TO THE NEXT VARIABLE TO BE EDITED. PRESS AND HOLD THE MENU/ENTER BUTTON TO CHANGE THE FOCUS BETWEEN THE UPPER AND LOWER PORTIONS OF THIS SCREEN. THE LOWER (NAVIGATION) PORTION OF THE SCREEN CONTAINS THE ABILITY TO SET THE OPTIONS OF THE STEP, TO ADD ANOTHER STEP AND TO COMPLETE THE NEW PROGRAM (DONE). ADDING ANOTHER STEP WILL STORE THE VARIABLES OF THE CURRENT STEP AND ADD A NEW STEP. IT WILL THEN RE-DRAW THE SCREEN TO ALLOW YOU TO EDIT THE VARIABLES OF THE NEW STEP. COMPLETE THE PROGRAM BY SELECTING DONE IT WILL THEN STORE THE PROGRAM INTO MEMORY AND TAKE YOU BACK TO THE SYSTEM MENU. Image 3: Add Program - Edit Step Ohmbrew Automations,
STEP OPTIONS EACH STEP HAS A SERIES OF OPTIONS THAT CAN BE ENABLED TO FURTHER REFINE THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THE STEP. THESE OPTIONS CAN BE VIEWED AND EDITED BY SELECTING THE 'OPTIONS' TEXT IN THE LOWER (NAVIGATION) PORTION OF THE ADD STEP SCREEN AND PRESSING THE MENU/EDIT BUTTON. THIS MENU SCREEN CAN BE SEEN IN IMAGE 4 BELOW. Image 4: Add Program - Step Options PAUSE AFTER STEP (PAUSE AFTER) THE 'PAUSE AFTER STEP' OPTION WILL PAUSE THE PROGRESS OF THE PROGRAM FOLLOWING THE STEP. THIS ALLOWS THE USER THE OPPORTUNITY TO TEST THE PROGRESS OF FERMENTATION BEFORE CONTINUING WITH THE PROGRAM. THE HOME SCREEN WILL INDICATE THAT THE PROGRAM IS IN A PAUSED STATE AFTER THIS OCCURS. TO CONTINUE WITH THE PROGRESS OF THE PROGRAM WHILE IN THE PAUSED STATE, ENTER THE SYSTEM MENU AND SELECT 'ADJUST CUR PROGRAM' AND THEN SELECT 'CONTINUE PROGRAM'. START AT CURRENT TEMP (START@CURRTEMP) THE 'START AT CURRENT TEMP' OPTION IS ONLY AVAILABLE FOR THE FIRST STEP OF A PROGRAM. THIS OPTION WILL SET THE START TEMPERATURE OF THE CURRENT STEP BY READING THE CURRENT TEMPERATURE FROM THE TEMPERATURE PROBE. Ohmbrew Automations,
DISABLE STAGE THE 'DISABLE STAGE' OPTION ALLOWS YOU TO DISABLE EITHER THE HEATING OR THE COOLING OUTLET DURING THE SELECTED STAGE. FREE RISE THE 'FREE RISE' OPTION ALLOWS THE TEMPERATURE TO NATURALLY RISE AS A RESULT OF THE FERMENTATION PROCESS. ONCE THE 'FREE RISE' OPTION HAS BEEN ENABLED, THE SYSTEM WILL ASK YOU TO SET A MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE. THIS WILL CREATE A MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE CEILING TO PREVENT YOUR SYSTEM FROM OVERHEATING. THIS OPTION WILL ALLOW THE TEMPERATURE TO FLOAT IN BOTH DIRECTIONS DURING THE STEP. FREE RISE AND FOLLOW (FR & FOLLOW) THE 'FREE RISE AND FOLLOW' OPTION IS SIMILAR TO THE FREE RISE OPTION WITH ONE IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE. DURING A FREE RISE AND FOLLOW STEP, THE SYSTEM WILL NOT ALLOW THE TEMPERATURE TO COOL ONCE THE TEMPERATURE HAS INCREASED. THIS OPTION WILL ALSO ASK YOU TO SET A MAXIMUM THRESHOLD FOR THE STEP. Ohmbrew Automations,
