2 Finding the controls Main unit (control panel) Multi-operation buttons refer to the function displayed on the display panel. This unit will automatically select using KDDI s 0077 long distance call service. If you do not want to use this service, press (Function), (77 SELECTY), and. Then, please make sure the 77 SELECTY indicator is turned off. 5 Decide if you want to subscribe to 77 SELECTY service. If you press (Start) or leave the unit for about 2 minutes, the unit automatically starts to set up for 77 SELECTY service. If you do not want to subscribe to this service, see the message in step 4 for instructions. 3 Charge the battery in the charger for 10 hours. Charge indicator -lights red: while charging. -lights green: charging completed. This unit will automatically select the dialing mode (Tone/Pulse). Subscribing to 77 SELECTY An automatic online setup will start in an hour. After the online setup is completed, 77 SELECTY indicator will light in green to show that 77 SELECTY service is ready to be used. During the online setup, your telephone number will be sent to KDDI. Charging terminals After your Panasonic battery is fully charged, it will last up to about 7 hours of conversation. 4

5 Installations and connections Insert the recording paper tray, the recording paper cover and the recording paper stacker in the main unit 1 Install the recording paper tray on the main unit ( 1 ), then install the recording paper cover on the paper tray by sliding it down from the top ( 2 ). 1 Align with the guides. The printing quality of this cassette is inferior to that with KX-FAN901. As you use it over and over, the printing quality becomes worse. Use with this cassette for printing on the important documents is not recommended. Replace the cassette, when the printing quality becomes noticeably inferior. *3 Do not use this cassette on the recording paper other than postcard (color photo quality) and sticker sheet (color photo quality). 5

6 Installations and connections Installing the ribbon cassette Make sure that you use the correct ribbon cassette for your printing purpose (see page 5). (Only one ribbon cassette can be used at a time.) 1 Press down the control panel open lever ( 1 ) and pull up the control panel ( 2 ). Control panel Click 4 Install the ribbon cassette to the cassette carriage with "A" side facing toward you. "B" side cannot be used. Ribbon cassette 2 Make sure that the ribbon cassette carriage is located at the "Cassette replacement position". If not located at the "Cassette replacement position", move to the right position. Cassette replacement position "A" side facing toward you Push the ribbon cassette in until it locks, while slightly pushing down the ribbon cassette against this part at the same time. Ribbon cassette carriage Do not touch the flat cable (brown). Printing head 3 Remove the stopper and wind the ribbon cassette if the ink ribbon is slack. Ribbon cassette Stopper Ink ribbon (Set under the top of the printing head.) 5 Close the control panel by pressing down on both sides. Make sure to close the control panel until it locks. 7 Installations and connections Installing recording paper See page 5 for compatible recording paper. Papers of different sizes or types cannot be used at the same time. 1 Pull out the recording paper cover toward the direction of the arrow. When you add papers, remove all the remaining papers before adding them. 3 Adjust the guide (left) to the size of the recording paper, then insert the recording paper. A4 plain paper: Recording paper cover Guide (left) Printing side is on the front Guide Postcard: Sticker sheet: 2 A4 plain paper/postcard: Fan the stack of recording paper to prevent the paper jam. Postcard (Color photo quality)/ Sticker sheet (Color photo quality): Take out from the bag by holding the edge of the paper. Align the top of the postcard or sticker sheet with this line. Make sure that you install the recording paper correctly. In case of postcard (color photo quality), glossy side has to face up, or the ink ribbon may be cut. 4 Install the recording paper cover on the recording paper tray by sliding it down from the top. If you touch the printing area, it may affect printing results. XXX shows the remaining station numbers you can store. You can program up to 150 stations, including 5 preprogrammed stations. 2 Enter the name, up to 12 characters (see the table on page 9 for instructions). 3 Press (Register) 2 times. 4 Enter the telephone number, up to 30 digits. To correct a mistake, press (Clear). 5 Press (Register). To store a second or third number, repeat steps Rotate the (Search dial) until the desired name is displayed. 2 Lift the handset or press (Speakerphone). Editing a stored name or number 1 Rotate the (Search dial) until the desired name is displayed. 2 Press (Edit). If you do not need to edit the name, press (Register) 2 times and skip to step 5. 3 Edit the name (see the table on page 9 for instructions). 4 Press (Register) 2 times. If you do not need to edit the telephone number, skip to step 7. 6 Press (Register). 7 If necessary, enter the group number (1-9). 8 Press (Register). 12 Sending faxes Sending a fax manually Document guide Handset FACE DOWN Sending a fax using the search dial Document guide FACE DOWN 1 Adjust the width of the document guides to the size of the document. 2 Insert the document (up to 5 pages) FACE DOWN until a single beep is heard. 3 If necessary, press (Resolution) or (Color) repeatedly to select the desired setting (see below). 4 Lift the handset or press (Speakerphone). 5 Dial the fax number. 6 When a fax tone is heard, press 7 Replace the handset if you are using it. The unit will start fax transmission. 1 Adjust the width of the document guides to the size of the document. 2 Insert the document (up to 5 pages) FACE DOWN until a single beep is heard. 3 If necessary, press (Resolution) or (Color) repeatedly to select the desired setting (see below). 4 Rotate the (Search dial) until the desired name is displayed. 5 Press The unit will start fax transmission. To select the resolution Select the desired resolution according to the type of document, by pressing (Resolution) or (Color). Black and white document: Press. Color document: Press. 13 Receiving faxes You can select beforehand whether to receive faxes by Receive in the memory or Receive on recording paper. Receive in the memory (Default setting) How to use The received fax will be stored in the memory. You can check the contents on the display, then print the necessary information only. How the memory indicator works (Changes each time it is pressed) light on Receive on recording paper The received fax will be printed on recording paper. The unit will start fax reception. Using the portable handset: If the (Auto answer) light is on, turn it off by pressing When AUTO ANSWER mode is off, the unit provides two types of receiving modes: (Telephone) mode and (Fax/Telephone) mode. Telephone mode () Pre-selected setting: Select this mode when you plan to answer the calls yourself. When receiving calls, you have to answer all calls manually. Fax/Telephone mode (): Select this mode when you are near the unit and want to use it to receive voice calls yourself and fax calls automatically. Change the setting if you want to use this mode. 1. Press (Function). 2. 14 Receiving faxes Display when fax is received in the memory Retrieve faxes stored in the memory F 2 F 4 flash The number of faxes stored in the memory is displayed. means "a new fax has been stored in the memory" Flashing will stop after all new faxes have been displayed or printed. 1 Press F 4 (Fax list). 2 Press to select the desired fax to display. 3 Press (Display) to see the fax (see below for detail). To print the displayed page, press 4 To see other faxes, press F 2 (Fax list) and repeat steps 2-3. To exit the program, press (Stop). Scroll pages (Example : Documents consist of 3 pages.) 16 Receiving faxes Receiving a fax automatically (AUTO ANSWER on) light on Setting AUTO ANSWER mode F 2 light on 1 If the (Auto answer) light is off, turn it on by pressing 2 When receiving a call, the unit will receive a fax document or record a voice message automatically depending on the caller s request. Recording your own greeting message Handset AUTO ANSWER mode will work when the answer) light is on. Fax/Answering device mode (/) Pre-selected setting: Select this mode when you want to receive all voice and fax calls automatically. Fax only mode (): Select this mode when you wish to use the unit only as a fax machine. You can record your own greeting message. When receiving a call, it will be played to callers instead of the pre-recorded Japanese greeting message. Answering device only mode (): Select this mode when you wish to use the unit only as a telephone answering device. Change the setting if you want to use the fax only mode or answering device only mode. 1. Press (Function). 1 Press (Record). 2. Press. 2 Rotate the (Search dial) until the following is displayed. 3 Lift the handset. 4 Press 5 Record your greeting message, up to 16 seconds, using the handset. 6 Press (Stop). 7 Replace the handset. 17 Operating the built-in answering device Activating the answering device light on/flash Operating the answering device from a remote location light on 1 Turn the (Auto answer) light on by pressing. Preparation: Programming the remote operation ID 2 When receiving a call, a greeting message will be played and the unit will record a voice message. To record your own greeting message, see page 16. Operation: Listening to a recorded message from a remote location Turn the (Auto answer) light on before you go out. Remote operations are available only from a touch tone telephone. 1. Call your unit. 2. Enter the remote operation ID during the greeting message. 3. Press 2 or wait 4 seconds. Only the new recorded messages will be played back. To listen to all the recorded messages, press 4 after the new messages have been played back. 2 Press (Start), then press. Erasing your own greeting message 1 Press (Record) and rotate the (Search dial) until the following is displayed. 2 Press (Start), then press. The pre-recorded Japanese greeting message will be played when you receive a call. 17

18 Using the color hand scanner Scanning a document F 2 6 Press the color hand scanner against the document, and move it slowly toward the direction of the arrow ( ). Scanning direction 1 Press down the handle of the color hand scanner, and pull out the scanner from the main unit. Then, turn it over. 7 After the scanning is completed, press (Stop). You will hear a beep, and the scanned document is stored in the memory of the main unit. Only 1 page can be scanned. 2 Press (Resolution) or (Color) repeatedly to select the desired resolution. Standard Fine Photo Color Color (fine) 8 To print the scanned document or to send it by fax, see pages 19 and 20. If you make a mistake, press (Stop) to erase the content in the memory, then start from step 2. Important: When you have completed scanning, the scanned document in the memory will be automatically erased after 10 minutes. To reinsert the color hand scanner into the main unit, turn the scanner over, and insert it into the main unit firmly. 3 Press F 2 (Scanning width) repeatedly to select the desired width. 19 Using the color hand scanner Printing the scanned document on A4 paper or postcard Printing the scanned document on the optional sticker sheet (2 frames16 frames) F 2 (Bottom side) (Bottom side) 1 Scan the document with the color hand scanner. When you scan a postcard, adjust the scanning width to "" and proceed scanning. When the scanning is completed, the following is displayed. 2 Install the recording paper and the corresponding ribbon cassette (see page 5). 3 Press 4 If necessary, enter the number of copies up to 30, using the dial keypad. 5 Press When you print in color photo quality, make sure that you install the paper in the right direction (see page 7). Then, press. The unit will start printing. To re-scan the document, press 2 times, then start from step 1. 3 Install the color photo quality ribbon cassette and the sticker sheet. 4 Press F 2 (Sticker sheet). 5 Press F 2 (Select) repeatedly. means 16-frame sticker sheet means 2-frame sticker sheet 6 Press (Register). 7 Make sure that you install the sticker sheet in the right direction (see page 7). Then, press. The unit will start printing. After the printing is completed, the scanned document in the memory will be erased. 8 To end operating color hand scanner, reinsert the hand scanner into the main unit. 19

21 Individual services Using the services Kyushu Matsushita Electric Co., Ltd. (hereafter called KME ) offers individual information services, such as . Your fax machine with features will be able to send an to another party s personal computer (PC) or another fax machine anywhere in the world through the Internet. Also, you will be able to receive an from them. To access the Internet using your fax machine, you have to subscribe to the following services beforehand. 77 SELECTY services offered by the KDDI, and Individual information services offered by KME. When the 77 SELECTY indicator is off, you need to activate the service. Please refer to Setting up 77 SELECTY services in the right column. Important: If your fax machine is connected to a home telephone system or a private branch exchange (PBX) system, these services are not available. KME information services The following services are available with your fax machine. A call charge and information service fee will be applied. After about 1 minute, an online data communication will start between your unit and KDDI. After the communication has been completed, the 77 SELECTY indicator will turn green. Note: Please contact KDDI Customer Service Center at (dial toll free) 9 am-9 pm in the following case: If you are subscribing to NTT s discount service plan. (It may become ineffective by selecting 77 SELECTY services.) 21

22 Individual services Subscribing to KME information services Install the plain paper (A4 size) and black ribbon cassette in advance. 1 Confirm that the 77 SELECTY indicator is green.
